Want to Share Your Faith? Start with Words from the Bible!

Believe, confess, repent, and follow.

As an evangelist, people occasionally ask me which Bible verses they should memorize and use when sharing their faith. While there are many great ones to choose from, here’s where I suggest that they start:

  • 1 Peter 3:15: “But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”

  • Luke 12:12: “For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

These are both so important to know before sharing your faith. Spend time in the Word and in prayer so you are spiritually filled and prepared. But also know and have confidence that the Holy Spirit will speak through you.

Now, when it’s time to actually share your faith, my guidance would be to start here:

  • Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

  • 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

  • Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Have you noticed that there’s a growing segment of people in the world today who don’t know what sin is, or that they’re a sinner? They may respond with, “I’ve never killed anybody.”

But the Bible says very clearly that we’re all sinners, and that sin keeps us from God. The beautiful thing is that God doesn’t leave us where we are, separated from him by sin. No, he gives us a path through his Son, Jesus.

  • John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Hello there,

I agree that any witness should be accompanied by the Word of God, accurately spoken and appropriately applied, and with regard to it's context, and suitability.

* The writer of the article in the link quotes Luke 12:12,

'For the Holy Ghost shall teach you
In the same hour what ye ought to say.'

* This verse, like every other, has a context which needs to be considered before making application of it to ourselves.

* Our Lord, Himself, spoke these words to His disciples (see Luke 12:1); to the twelve.  In fact, Luke 12:11-12, reveals that this word was said particularly with them in mind,

'And when they bring you
unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers,
take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer,
or what ye shall say:'

* Then come the words in question:-

'For the Holy Ghost shall teach you
In the same hour what ye ought to say'

* Are we justified in applying this to ourselves, in relation to witnessing to others? When the context reveals that it was spoken to a particular company; and refers to them being brought before the synagogue, or before magistrates and powers, obviously for judgement.  For the promise of verse 19 is made in relation to those specific situations and no other.

* All Scripture is for our learning, but not all is about us.
* We cannot claim promises which were not made to us, and expect them to be fulfilled.

In Christ Jesus
Chris

I would suggest starting with what the person believes/knows.

Do they believe in God, do they know what God expects or what sin is. Is the bible reliable etc etc

The question.' If you found yourself before God and he said to you' Why should I let you into heaven' what would you say?'
Opens a lot of boxes, is there a God, judgement, heaven/hell and how to get there/not go there.
As well as letting you learn about what the person you're talking to knows about Christianity.

Agreed (shock horror!)

There's little point in using the bible until your "victim" accepts there is a God and that the scriptures carry His authorship.
Disturb us Lord, when we are too pleased with ourselves. When our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little. When we arrived safely because we sailed too close to the shore. Disturb us Lord, to dare more boldly. To venture on wider seas. Where storms will show your mastery; Where, losing sight of land, we shall find the stars. We ask you to push back the horizons of our hopes; And to push into the future, in strength, courage, hope and love.                     (SIR FRANCIS DRAKE 1577)

Argeeing....agreeing.....arguing? Take your pick.

I love it John. You are clearly hedging your bets here.
Despite what your head thought, your fingers clearly wanted to say arguing which is our usual state of play!

Do you agree, or do you want to fight about it?
