The apostles in Acts gave the identifing marks of an apostle. one vital quality was that they were to have been with Jesus durring his earthly ministry.
Come on John. That idea disqualifies Paul doesn't it?

That limitation is blown wide open by Ephesians4v11-
And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,
If there are no more apostles, then there are no more pastors, teachers, prophets, or evangelists! You cannot be selective in the way you utilise scripture.

Gal1v19. I saw none of the other apostles?only James, the Lord?s brother.
Acts14v14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting:

1Cor4v6Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit ...............................9For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings.

1Thes1v1Paul, Silas and Timothy,
To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
Grace and peace to you.
2v6We were not looking for praise from people, not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles of Christ we could have asserted our authority.

Phil2v25 But now a matter has compelled me to send Epaphroditus to you, a brother who is a helper and worker with me, but your Apostle and a Minister of my needs,

There are other references to the alternative apostles, but I guess you get the drift from the above verses. The notion that there were just twelve is yet another Catholic Church false doctrine, just like Mary was "ever virgin" or "co redemptrix" with Jesus.

And also to bust another myth, apostles can also be female.-
Romans16v7Greet Andronicus and Junia, my fellow Jews who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was.

Junia was female!
Disturb us Lord, when we are too pleased with ourselves. When our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little. When we arrived safely because we sailed too close to the shore. Disturb us Lord, to dare more boldly. To venture on wider seas. Where storms will show your mastery; Where, losing sight of land, we shall find the stars. We ask you to push back the horizons of our hopes; And to push into the future, in strength, courage, hope and love.                     (SIR FRANCIS DRAKE 1577)

Spiritualy yes, apostels physically walked and talked with Jesus.
No John, not all apostles walked with him.

Disturb us Lord, to dare more boldly. To venture on wider seas. Where storms will show your mastery; Where, losing sight of land, we shall find the stars. In a way the same can be said about the other positions like pastors, prophets etc as some have said they were only for the early years of the church. I may disagree with that along with apostleship, as without apostles today the rest of the positions can't exist as it is only apostles who have the authority to appoint them which is why apostles have to be appointed directly from God.
Apostles have no greater right to appoint prophets than prophets have to appoint apostles.
Both are appointed by God.

There are many today who get awarded these various names, mainly pastors, but that does not mean they are sent by God. In fact the proof that most pastors are not sent by God is evident in their lack of fruit.

Eph4v11So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers,
12 toward the perfecting of the saints for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ,

V12 States that the pastor's job is to bring the saints to perfection, (ie. maturity) so that they do the work of the ministry to build up the body.
But what do we find? The same pastor, teaching the same stuff, year after year, to the same bunch of people he taught it to the previous year.
These people suckle at the tit of the pastor each Sunday like the spiritual infants they are. Other than putting out the chairs and making the teas and coffees, they have no clue what the ministry of the body is.
The pastors position is unassailable. He has a paid job and if he truly fullfills the command of Jesus, he would lose his salary, -so keeping his audience before him year by year is his real goal.

And that's why pastors teach that the other Ephesian ministries ceased with the death of the early apostles. He cannot permit any competition to arise from amongst the audience!
