Should individual bodies of the Church of Jesus Christ have some form of membership?
This is a question that is being discussed in our church at the moment, at present we are part of the Baptist Union of Great Britain therefore we have no choice but to have a form of membership.
To change would mean leaving the Baptist Union.
If we have membership what form should that take?
If no membership, how are decisions made?

this used to be one of my lttle niggles

In the early days I went to a free Church where I was'nt allowed communion [although I canot remember why  now - but something to do with membership ]

Anway after being excommunicated [nothing to do with me] the second fellowship I ventured too was good and I always felt part and a member / but was persuaded to become a member by a friend [I could'nt understand why - but I now realise "it was the committment thing] something I knew nothihg about [due to my ignorance of Christian things]

Anyway I signed up for membership and went through the proceedure - only to find a week later they had disbanded the membership [any wantiong to become a member after that time had to say "what they would do in the Church and what part they would play! [I thought what a waste of my time]

It did'nt really phase me as I left there anyway and went to another Church instead "where I learnt a lot mre about this commitment thingy" [it was never in my vocabulary and was quite alien to me ]

anyway I'm learning

I did sunday school for twenty five years - after that and other stuff as a member - yes membership is needed if only to define commitment or numbers.

One place I went to had many holiday visitors - so it would have difficult to determine the actual body of the Church unless you had membership

Hello @jimboy ,

Thankfully as a member of the Church which is His Body, of which He is the Head, there is no danger of being excommunicated, and my membership is known by Him, and precious.

Denominations with their individual doctrinal stances and requirements for membership simply promote division, and destroy the unity which is ours in Christ.

I cannot help by thinking that if we had no Denominations whatsoever and it was all a free for all we would end up with far more individuals and groups with their own interpretations and doctrinal stances, unfortunately as Christians we are still not perfect and tend to stray from the truth, not one of us has the whole truth, if we believe we do we have a problem.

There are practical reasons for having a membership of a church.
One is to determine who can or cannot influence how a particular church is run. Being a member and listed on a membership list indicates that one is committed to support  that local church and as such are entitled to have a say in the running of that church at the quarterly church meetings.

I think membership into the body of Christ has nothing to do with man and their churches, which most of the larger ones are nothing more than Religious Prostitutes(seeking money and power in GOD's name) it's a calling by GOD himself. I think people should start to have assemblies in their homes and rented places if needed for large assemblies, not going out buying expensive buildings and the maintenance of them. The money could be used as GOD intended example ; for orphans, widows & the poor and needy. Most churches I've passed are always closed or are more like a community centre nothing Godly apart from worship for about 3 hours per week if that.
