I remember when I worked trains as a conductor that the next evening I had a difficult shift to do. I wasn't looking forward to it. I must have been tired that night. Woke up, had breakfast... (Evening breakfast!) and drove to work to face the shift.
I worked the train. I think it was every stop to the smaller city where I was rushing back and fore trying to do the doors and the tickets etc... Then from the smaller city it was every stop to the big city doing the same. Then a little break and back down the main line and onto the branch line that though had lovely scenery, had a reputation back then. The people lived tough lives... Big butch men... You thought they were tough... You should have seen the women up there! And I was working the very last train up and back... Every stop. Chasing people who did all they could to avoid the train fayre... Then back into the big city where those going for a night out had come with me on the train...
Then a break, and then the last train back that needed considerable concentration, as the large town after the city was the only booked stop to pick up. All other stops including the two prior to the town were drop off only so I had to work very fast doing tickets after the big city and the large town to tell the driver where to stop. Any one hiding to try not to pay would be a big issue here. In the past I'd had trouble on this train. The basic idea was for drop off due to evening troubles at certain stations had caused big issues of assaults etc.
Anyway. Worked this train to the smaller city, and then after this small city, another rush to get then as from there the train filled up again chiefly with drunks returning from night outs and the first stop being a request stop, so not easy getting tickets done before telling the driver to stop or not... So another difficult working... Then after this the large town west where again, some would do all to avoid paying and a very small town, and two more request stops and back to the depot, hopefully rushing to cash up after the last request stop so I could leave work on time ish, as counting up sometimes after the train wasn't easy due to whoever was on spare watching the TV... Distracting trying to count!
Anyway. Finished the shift... Drove home... Almost too tired to have supper...Hardly remember. To bed only to hear the alarm... I woke up. It had all been a dream! Good? No! I had the shift ahead of me so had to do it all again! Was so tired after just dreaming it!
Don't you just love dreams!!!
