What type of train? With the older trains (Steam and early diesel) one can tell what the train was carrying and the expected speeds likely by the positioning of the lights (Especially the Great Western Railway or the Western Region of British Railways. But also other regions/railway companies had similar systems. Today the type of lighting is used to indicate the general top sped of the train. Generally trains "Passed" to go over 100mph have two bright lights day or night like cars do (Horizontal), and trains with a top "Linespeed" of less then 100mph have on bright light with a lesser marker light the other side. The one big bright light on one side will point forward for day running and at night is switched to the other side to give a forward and slightly down view for night running. (Though train lights are generally no where near as good as car lights at night as they do not need to see where they are going other then to see rail staff involved in shunting moves etc.).

ahhhhhhh found the one I was looking for - couldn't find it on the computer, found it in old notebook - wrote this 31st January 2012 - Tuesday, but it mentions glitter - so why not :grin:
