The Place of Suffering in Christian Life

The good news of Christ is not that there is no longer sense in or any need for suffering.  The good news is that in Christ all suffering can make us obedient children of God!

Hebrews 5

7In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety. 8Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.?

The sign and proof of Jesus's total obedience is His acceptance of His passion and death.  At the approach of His arrest, Jesus experienced great anguish of soul...

Mark 14

34"The sorrow in my heart is so great that it almost crushes me"

He prayed to His Father...."Father..if you will, take this cup of suffering away from me.  Not my will, however, but your will be done."  An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.

Luke 22:42-44

In great anguish he prayed even more fervently, his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground

God heard the cries of Jesus.  He sent an angel, a messenger bringing his own strength, to comfort him.  He did not remove the cause of the agony, but he gave Jesus the strength and power to go through with his passion and his death.
