French police in Paris 2015

France has been heightened alert since January's attacks on the Charlie Hebdo magazine and a Jewish supermarket

French police have arrested a man suspected of planning an attack on "one or two churches", the country's interior minister has said.

The man, a 24-year-old computer science student, was known to security services as having expressed a wish to travel to Syria, Bernard Cazeneuve said.

"Several war weapons" were found at his home and car, he added.

France was rocked earlier this year by deadly attacks on the Charlie Hebdo offices and a Jewish supermarket.

The man, an Algerian national, is also being questioned in connection with the murder of a woman found dead in her car near Paris.

Aurelie Chatelain, 32, had been shot several times. She was visiting the Paris area to attend a training course.

The suspect was detained on Sunday after he apparently shot himself by accident and called for an ambulance.

Police followed a trail of blood leading to his vehicle, where they found guns and notes establishing "beyond doubt" he planned an imminent, attack, according to Mr Cazeneuve.
