Did Christ go to Hell ?

The answer is, No He did not, as is made clear in the verse below.

Jhn 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Everything that Jesus had to do to save us was, "finished", before He died, the following verses are sometimes used to teach that Jesus went to Hell after His death.

1Pe 3:18   For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us[fn5] to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
1Pe 3:19   by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison,
1Pe 3:20   who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited[fn6] in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.

All this passage is telling us is that it was the Holy Spirit speaking through Noah, while the ark was being prepared, that preached to people alive at that time, who did not repent, and whose spirits are now in prison

Jesus said,  "into Your hands I commit My spirit ", Note:   Not, "into hell", but,  "into Your hands".

Luk 23:46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, "Father, 'into Your hands I commit My spirit.' " Having said this, He breathed His last.

Also,  "You will not abandon my soul to Sheol".  Notice it is "to hell", not, "in hell"  In other words, "I won't be going there"

NASB - Psa 16:10 - For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.

RSV - Psa 16:10 - For thou dost not give me up to Sheol, or let thy godly one see the Pit.

ASV - Psa 16:10 - For thou wilt not leave my soul to Sheol; Neither wilt thou suffer thy holy one to see corruption

ESV - Psa 16:10 - For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.*

Footnote:
* Or see the pit

ESV - Act 2:27 - ??For you will not abandon my soul to Hades,
or let your Holy One see corruption.

NASB - Act 2:27 - BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT ABANDON MY SOUL TO HADES, NOR ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY.

RSV - Act 2:27 - For thou wilt not abandon my soul to Hades, nor let thy Holy One see corruption.

Every blessing.

Edwin.

yes the Apostles Creed - reads

Quote
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
     creator of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord;
     He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit,
          and born of the Virgin Mary,
     He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
          was crucified, died, and was buried.
     He descended to the dead. [in older translations, ?He descended into hell? ]
     On the third day He rose again.
     He ascended into heaven,
          and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
     He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
     the holy catholic Church,
     the communion of saints,
     the forgiveness of sins,
     the resurrection of the body,
     and the life everlasting. AMEN.

So Jesus was resurrected [Lazarus] and so Jesus was not left as "soul" but because of His death - He was able to do
"greater things" than these [ John 14:12 ] being that the person of the Holy Spirit could now work through His
people John 16:7; But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate
will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

Acts 2:27  Says it all - in that , Jesus says "because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you
 will not let your holy one see decay."

In Psalm 16:10; David is sure or certain that he would not be left in this state of soul

Psalm 16:10 "because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay"

Now Compare Job 14:14;

"Spirit - Soul - Body" Into your hands I commit my spirit" - "You will not abandon my soul in the place of the dead" - "Jesus was raised and now in His body" or see :  John 20:27;

King James Bible
Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, [ sheol/grave] neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

[Corruption - not as meant to be or designed - e : corrupted]

death on the cross,was regarded as totally defiled and untouchable and warranted burning so what we are being told here is that Jesus was not burnt but was rescued by the good Friday saint and buried below ground - via google  click on Hell - wincam

Jesus paid the penalty for our sins on the cross. He tasted the sinners death and is the Saviour of the world. That whoever places their faith in Jesus the Saviour and  Redeemer has crossed over from death to life.

That is the significance of the crucifixion of Christ.  He died and rose from the dead as the ultimate hero

Well  :D  ,, I was exploring whether Jesus went to hell or not !

that led me onto something that was quite a revelation to me  as I knew about - eg : "Spirit - Soul - Body" but had never seen it in relation to certain scriptures =

1.  Into your hands I commit my spirit" - 2. "You will not abandon my soul in the place of the dead" -3.  "Jesus was raised and  in body"

Which parts are conscious I wonder after death?

Well as Jesus preached to those in "prison"  1 Peter 3:19; He must have been conscious ? ........

Now see ; Ecclesiastes 12:7   and the dust returns to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
  ?

Now that's where the theology of "body dies- spirit goes back to God and soul goes to the grave"  come from !

but look at

verse 18   ?  For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having
been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 19in which also He went and made proclamation to the  spirits now in prison,
   ?
