More Guns, More Shootings?

As a Christian, I worry about an increasingly armed America.

Recently, Richard Martinez, father of a student who was killed in Elliot Rodgers's rampage in Santa Barbara, California, lashed out at politicians, "I don't care about your sympathy. I don't give a s--- that you feel sorry for me…. Get to work and do something. I'll tell the president the same thing if he calls me. Getting a call from a politician doesn't impress me."

But despite these sensible and gut-wrenching appeals for tighter gun restrictions from Martinez, Sandy Hook families, and others who've personally experienced gun violence, Americans are seeing gun-owners' rights expand in some cases.

A new law set to go into effect in Georgia this summer "permits lawful gun owners to bring weapons into public places such as churches and bars, but allows church officials and bar owners to ban guns from their buildings." Additionally, some college campuses permit students to have guns, too. (This is especially disconcerting given that college campuses are generally safe from gun violence because students have been forbidden from possessing firearms.)

Policies that make it easier for gun owners to carry their weapons in public disturb me. And I'm not the only one. When the Georgia law passed last month, the state's Episcopal bishops spoke out to ban firearms from any of their church buildings. Chains like Chipotle and Starbucks have changed their policies after gun-rights activists openly carried weapons into their stores.

As Sharon Hodde Miller pointed out last year in her excellent article, Why All Christians Can Back Better Gun Control, "Sinful people kill people, but guns sure do make it a lot easier." To cite just one example, the majority ...Continue reading...

Its the powerful gun lobbies I think [not gum] its the second amendment

The stature of liberty  stands tall, giving the right to shoot people

"The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

The american people need to complile with what their constitution actual says and if they want a gun, they should belong to an organised militia.

I'm being simplistic, as the powerful nra makes too much money to be easily limited.

If you remove guns or any other form of defense from the people, the only ones left with guns are the criminals who don't give a damn about gun regulations!
Guns don't kill, its evil people who kill. They would be far better looking at all the psychotic prescription drugs that virtually all these shooters were on before they start going for the innocent gun owner.
I have a shotgun certificate but would also have a hand gun if it were legal in this Britain.
There is nothing Christian in not defending yourself or your family if attacked!
Disturb us Lord, when we are too pleased with ourselves. When our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little. When we arrived safely because we sailed too close to the shore. Disturb us Lord, to dare more boldly. To venture on wider seas. Where storms will show your mastery; Where, losing sight of land, we shall find the stars. We ask you to push back the horizons of our hopes; And to push into the future, in strength, courage, hope and love.                     (SIR FRANCIS DRAKE 1577)

An answer straight out of the NRA. Its not a case of them against us, but a case of criminals against those they think they can take advantage of. We are not defenceless, our first line of defence is the police.

What the problem in the usa is they have distorted the 2nd amendment, to read only the right to carry guns. It actually implies that carrying a gun means you belong to a defenceive army group. They oppose all but the most simple control over guns. It is the same here every shooting in this country the killer was known to be 'strange' at his gun club, yet they did nothing or if they voiced concerns then the police did nothing.

The lack of trust in government and the men who were to hold leadership positions was a primary reason why the new citizens who wrote the 2nd amendment added along with 9 others to the 'bill of rights' of the United States Constitution.

Is our present government very trustworthy? Is it becoming more, or less, so?

Are not all government officials carnal men subject to too great of an extent to "the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life"?

Who can we always trust other than God?

If a person doesn't trust in God, perhaps he needs a gun to protect himself against an untrustworthy government.

Our first line of defense is the Police!!!!! Really?

That is utter nonsense, your first line of defense is you. YOU!
You are responsible before God for yourself, your family, and those around you.

You are speaking like a true child of the Welfare State. Sorry to be so harsh, but generations of people suckling at the tit of state has bred a nation of infants.
"Why don't the government do something!" That's the constant bleating we hear at every slight problem, and of course, the government love to hear that because it gives them the excuse to expand the size, dominion, and control of the already bloated state. They intrude into every corner of personal and family life, and they do it because people have bought into the lie.

When the Labour government created the Welfare State in 1948, this was the promise they made, "The state will take care of you from the cradle to the grave." In other words, the state is God!

God gave us, firstly as individuals, then as families, and then as neighbourhoods etc. the singular and then collective responsibility to make decisions. There is no scriptural justification to pass the buck further up the line. All that does is encourage the spirit of Ahab -personal abdication, along with the spirit of Jezebel, -control, manipulation, and dominion from above.

The following is taken from another thread on this forum. Thank God that there are at least some people out there who are willing to act with responsibility when a crisis happens, rather than just sitting and waiting.

Student Subdues Shooter After One Dead, 3 Injured at Seattle Pacific University

(Updated) It's the latest of several Christian college attacks.
Updated 6/6/13 8:58 a.m. with further identification

Seattle police have arrested a suspect in today's shooting at Otto Miller Hall on the campus of Seattle Pacific University. Local media report that Seattle police identified him as Aaron Ybarra, a 26-year-old with no known connections to SPU and that he was not a student at the school. He was armed with a shotgun and a knife, police said.

Police say the Ybarra was subdued by a student, who was acting as a building monitor. That student is now widely identified as Jon Meis. The Seattle Times says he was "working at the time as a monitor who sits at a desk in the lobby, near the Hall's front door. [He] quickly moved in to pepper-spray the gunman, then he tackled him to the ground. Police arriving moments later moved in to handcuff and arrest the suspect, other witnesses said."

Seattle police told reporters that after the student building monitor subdued the shooter, other students jumped on top of them and helped to keep the shooter to the ground.

"There are a number of heroes in this," assistant police chief Paul McDonagh told reporters Thursday night. "One person made the initial contact, then another person helped, and then other people joined in. If we're going to find any light in this, it's that the people around stepped up."

"I want to remind everyone here that the actions of the subject here do not define SPU or the city of Seattle," McDonagh said. "The actions of the students and staff, that's what defines Seattle Pacific University. This is not about an evil act but about the people that actually lived through his scenario and assisted each other when things were pretty tragic."

This young man saved many lives by not waiting for the police.
In the UK, the law is wickedly stacked against the members of the public who might take a stand against evil. Nevertheless if we consider ourselves responsible before God, we should do what is right, not just what is allowed.
