Why do you presume that Paul didn't drive it out? In my view that is exactly what Paul did as the following indicates.

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.? Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ?s power may rest on me.

a) Don't fall for the idea that Grace is just a passive state of being in regard to God. Grace puts us in the same place as Christ and with the same overcoming power that Christ used.
b) How can God's power be made perfect (consummated, completed, accomplished) in Paul's weakness, if that power wasn't applied to the job in hand?
c) Jesus said, "If I cast demons out by the spirit of God, then has the Kingdom of God come upon you." Therefore Paul also cast demons out by the spirit of God, as indeed should we!

How can Paul rejoice in the reality of Christ's power, unless he casts demons out like Christ did?

Okay, I guess I'd never really considered it like that, thanks.

Quite often the business about Paul's thorn in his flesh is used as an example of unanswered prayer. Another one that has just sprung to mind is when Jesus asked God to take away the cup from him - in the garden I think?
