All of us are very ugly before God even after He has started working on us. Every time we quench the Spirit, we stop God's work on us.

Quote
Rachael:
In some respects I disagree with this as in scripture in ephesians tells us how God the Father sees us through Jesus...with Jesus we have approach to God, he sees us as perfect through Jesus...we are also told that our sins are forgiven and God will remember them no more.

God forgives and forgets, but we remember and dredge them back to forefront and sin again. Can God overlook what we have brought back to the fore?

Quote
Amadeus:
Eventually, I believe, if we do it (quench the Spirit) too often we will find ourselves with Esau having no more place of repentance.

Quote
Rachael:
Again not quite sitting right with me as in why do we have the story of the Prodigal Son?  if there was eventually going to be no place for repentance then we do not even have hope let alone mercy.  There should always be room for mercy.

Oh there is room for mercy and God is willing to be merciful if we do not push Him repeatedly and insist on sinning repeatedly after have been forgiven repeatedly. Often we will say to ourselves, 'God is merciful so I can do this [sin] and tomorrow He will forgive me again'. Even at such foolish selfish thoughts God will be merciful, but is there not a limit with God? Do we sometimes so LIMIT Him that there can be no more mercy?

"Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel." Psalm 78:41

Has God, who allowed to the Israelites in the wilderness repeatedly murmured and complained before denying them access to the Promised Land, changed?

"For I am the LORD, I change not..." Mal 3:6

God is willing to be merciful if we do not push Him repeatedly and insist on sinning repeatedly after have been forgiven repeatedly" quote.

Strange, we are told to forgive our repentant offenders an infinite number of times, but according to this post God forgives a limited number of times.

What a small God this person follows.

An infinite God pays for a finite amount of sin, so if the love of God is described as being infinite surely his forgiveness is also infinite.

Hi John
You Said
Quote
Strange, we are told to forgive our repentant offenders an infinite number of times,

I could only find this one verse
Luk_17:4  and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ?I repent,? you must forgive him.?

But on the cross our Lord said

Luk_23:34  And Jesus said, ?Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.? And they cast lots to divide his garments.

And this was without their repentance and not forgetting.

Mat 5:43  ?You have heard that it was said, ?You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.?
Mat 5:44  But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Mat 5:45  so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

Matthew 18:22 I tell you to forgive them seventy time seven times. This is the Jewish way of saying an infinite number of times.

Jesus on the cross did not forgive them. He prayed to God that he would forgive them.

Hi John
Thank you for your reply  it raises an interesting question who can forgive sins on the cross our Lord asked the Father to forgive those who crucified him is not asking the Father  the same as our Lord forgiving them.
So should we take a leaf out of our lords book when we forgive someone  should we pray for our Heavenly  Father that they be forgiven.
When we prey the the Lords prayer  we pray to the Father  and ask his forgiveness so it is the Father who gives forgiveness no one else so when we forgive someone should we also say Father forgive them.

Love and Peace

These Scriptures come to mind reading your replies.  Didn't really want to chop up the chapter so posting bulk of it.  John posted a verse i thought more of the chapter relevant also.

Matthew 18

A Brother Who Sins
(Deuteronomy 19:15-21)

15If your brother sins against you, go and confront him privately. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. 16But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that 'every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.' 17If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, regard him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

18Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Ask in My Name
(John 16:23 33)

19Again, I tell you truly that if two of you on the earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by My Father in heaven. 20For where two or three gather together in My name, there am I with them.?

The Unforgiving Servant
(Romans 12:14 21)

21Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?"

22Jesus answered, "I tell you, not just seven times, but seventy-seven times!

23Because of this, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24As he began the settlements, a debtor was brought to him owing ten thousand talents. 25Since the man was unable to pay, the master ordered that he be sold to pay his debt, along with his wife and children and everything he owned.

26Then the servant fell on his knees before him. "Have patience with me," he begged, "and I will pay back everything."

27His master had compassion on him, forgave his debt, and released him.

28But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him, saying, "Pay back what you owe me!"

29So his fellow servant fell down and begged him, "Have patience with me, and I will pay you back."

30But he refused. Instead, he went and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay his debt.

31When his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and recounted all of this to their master.

32Then the master summoned him and declared, "You wicked servant! I forgave all your debt because you begged me. 33Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had on you?" 34In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should repay all that he owed.

35That is how My heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.
