Urge Your Elected Officials To Protect Kids' Access To Food

Today, 1 in 5 kids in America struggles with hunger.

It's more important than ever to protect federal nutrition programs that feed our nation's children, but right now the sequester - which automatically cuts funding for a large number of federally funded programs - includes devastating cuts to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), cutting 600,000 mothers and kids from the program altogether.

Sequestration also cuts billions from education funding, including Head Start programming that provides preschool aged kids with important health and nutrition services. More than 70,000 kids would lose access to Head Start under the plan.

Congress faces serious fiscal challenges, but cuts of this scale to WIC and early childhood education are short-sighted and will only lead to more children and families going hungry this year.

Take action today: Tell Congress not to balance the budget on the backs of children who need us.

Daily Voice : Stop Catching Wild Turtles for Turtle Races

Stop Catching Wild Turtles for Turtle Races

Turtles are dying off at an alarming pace under terrible pressure from habitat loss, road kill and other threats. But one of those threats could prove fairly simple to tackle: turtle races. Annual turtle races strain native turtle populations every year -- thousands of turtles are removed from the wild and raced at turtle races held in small towns across the country.

It’s easy to believe little harm is done when turtles are caught then released back into the wild after the races, but these races can expose turtles to deadly diseases. Those diseases spread to wild populations when the turtles are released.

Many of the threats native turtles face are difficult problems to solve -- but turtle races have an easy fix. Just stop using turtles caught in the wild.

Please take action now: Sign the petition and ask communities to stop using wild-caught turtles in their turtle races.

Daily Voice : Let's Work Together to Fix Medicare!

Let's Work Together to Fix Medicare!

Congress has been passing temporary patches to the Medicare sustainable growth rate (SGR) for 16 years. This formula, based on economic growth, dictates Medicare physician payment rates -- and the time has come to pass a permanent solution.

The American Medical Association is teaming up with more than 100 other medical organizations to send a list of recommendations to Congress. The goal? To eliminate the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula and provide long-term Medicare reforms aimed at improving the quality of patient care while lowering costs.

The time has come for Congress to acknowledge there is NOTHING sustainable about the SGR. The cost rises every time they pass another short-term patch -- and this year marks the 16-year anniversary of this "short-term" approach without a long-term solution.

Send a message to Congress: Physicians and patients have had enough "short-term" Medicare patches. It's time to work together for a long-term solution and solve this problem once and for all!

Western Australia: A Single Dog Bark Shouldn't Be a Crime!

New, tougher dog laws in Western Australia could have dog owners investigated for nuisance behavior after a single barking complaint.

Continuous, loud barking does indeed disturb the peace, but dogs occasionally bark when they sense danger or are hurt. Dog owners often get dogs for this very reason: to warn them of danger on their property. The new dog laws would encourage complaints from people with a hidden agenda -- criminals, or people who simply don't like dogs, for example.

Enforcing the new laws would tie up law enforcement and would ultimately harm dogs whose owners can't afford training and/or equipment to make them stop barking. Dogs could even be surrendered and put down by owners unable to comply with the new rigid laws.

Please sign the petition to urge the Western Australian government to ease up on their dog laws so that a single complaint won't warrant an investigation.

Daily Voice : Tell Congress to Label Genetically Engineered Food

Tell Congress to Label Genetically Engineered Food

The overwhelming majority of Americans want to know if food is genetically engineered.? Some 64 countries -? including China, Australia and the entire European Union - already require GE foods be labeled.

You have a fundamental right to know what's in your food, and the FDA already requires 3,000 ingredients, processes and additives be labeled.

So why is industry fighting so hard to keep 'genetically engineered' off the label? Are they worried you might actually know what you’re buying, and choose food whose genetic codes haven't been tampered with?

Congress can ensure you get the information you want. A bill that would require labeling has been introduced, and debate is happening right now on the Farm Bill that could affect your right to know.

Stop Monsanto and other industry giants from keeping you in the dark! Tell your members of Congress you have the right to know what you’re buying!

Stand With Vulnerable Seniors Across America

Will you take one minute to help America's most vulnerable seniors?

Actually, it won't even take that long for you to help seniors who are right now going without food or the medicine they need.

Simply signing your name will give hope to seniors struggling to make ends meet, maintain their independence, and live with dignity.

At this very moment...

- Nearly 9 million American seniors are going hungry;
- Health care costs are unaffordable for almost half of poor and low-income older adults; and,
- Declining health, disability or the loss of a spouse is forcing more and
more older Americans into isolation.
Real people are suffering more than any person of any age should.

Our parents and grandparents, neighbors and coworkers, perhaps members of your own family or close friends could well be - or soon be - one of America's most vulnerable seniors.

On their behalf, join with AARP Foundation and sign the Affirmation of Senior Rights today.

Daily Voice : STOP VIOLENCE Against Women and Children in Papua New Guinea

STOP VIOLENCE Against Women and Children in Papua New Guinea

In Papua New Guinea, women are raped, killed and maimed on a shocking scale.

The brutality is severe, often involving bush knives, axes, burning and even biting.

Appallingly, two out of three women have been beaten by their husbands and often, when mothers are assaulted, their children are too.

Margaret's husband used to pick her baby up and use him as a weapon to hit her. He would try to punch her in the face when she was breastfeeding.

All she wants is to live quietly with her baby and not have him injured by his father.

Women like Margaret are standing up against violence and you can stand beside them!

Act now to stop violence against women and children in Papua New Guinea!

Your voice will give them the support and the courage they need to continue their fight for change.
