End Stephen Harper's Billion-Dollar Big Oil Giveaway

A billion dollars is a lot of money.

A billion dollars could lift every Canadian senior out of poverty, with plenty left over to invest in renewable energies, clean technologies and energy-efficiency.

But Stephen Harper would rather hand $1.3 billion every year to the fossil fuel industry--a perverse subsidy that discourages investment in lower-emission and renewable energies.

This from the same Conservative government that gutted environmental legislation and withdrew Canada from the Kyoto climate-change treaty.

New Democrats have a better plan.

We’re calling on Stephen Harper to stop his billion-dollar Big Oil giveaway and start investing in the sustainable economy Canadians deserve.

Pledge to be More Mindful About Your Food!

So many of us want to live healthier lives. At the very root of that goal is the food that we eat. It's time we all pledged to change our lives by being more mindful of the food that we put into our bodies.

This pledge means:

- Eating more natural and organic foods

- Avoiding genetically modified foods and foods produced with hormones, pesticides, antibiotics and preservatives

- Eating foods rich in fiber, protein, vitamins, antioxidants and healthy fats

- Eating leaner meats and going meat-free some days

- Always adding more fruits and vegetables to our diets

- Reducing sodium, sugar and unhealthy fats

Abe's Market can help. Abe's Market is the online marketplace for great natural products. We know that when you feel good about what you're eating, you feel more connected to yourself and to the world around you. And that's the first step toward real change.

Pledge to be more mindful of what you eat, every day. Then, enjoy what you learn and how you feel along the way!

I Declare Equality

Our nation's highest court has ruled on our most fundamental rights as citizens, forever rewriting America’s history books.

We live now in a more fair and just country.

But listen: this change isn't done yet. There's a lot more coming, and it's coming fast.

Our fight doesn't end with the Supreme Court. It doesn't end in Congress or in state capitols. Our fight ends when everyone everywhere is equal - in schools, offices, and houses of worship. Everywhere. Our fight ends when we have true, complete equality.

So, this is what happens now: We turn this victory into action and declare boldly that the fight goes on. We keep fighting for our rights. And one day soon, when we win, we declare that all love is finally equal.

It's what we want. It's what we deserve. And it's what we're going to get.

Together, we can get this done. If you agree, add your name and declare it now.

Stop Destroying India's Forests

Coal is a scam. We must stop the government from cutting down giant areas of forest in Central India to get the coal that lies beneath.

Here's what's at stake:

  • Tigers - 35% of the 1700 tigers left in the wild live in Central India.

  • Forest communities - Almost half of the forest dependent communities in the country depend on the forests of Central India for their way of life.

  • Environment - Cutting down forests and burning the coal that lies underneath will release large quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere, perpetuating destructive climate change.

If that isn't enough, a coal scam larger than the 2G scam is coming to light. A report by the CAG says that the Coal Ministry, then headed by the Prime Minister, allocated coal blocks at a throw-away price costing taxpayers Rs 1.86 lakh crores (an earlier leak of the report put the figure even higher at Rs. 10.67 lakh crores (212 billion US dollars.))

Ask the PM to stop all new coal allocations and forest clearances until this scam has been investigated and there is a clear demarcation of areas that shouldn't be mined.

Tell Hospitals to Make Their Prices Public

If you've ever tried to find out how much a surgery is going to cost beforehand, you might feel like the hospitals and doctors are daring you to be an effective consumer of health care. They certainly make it as hard as possible.

Hospitals charge different prices to people with different insurance, and the highest prices to people with no insurance. They charge Medicare far more than they ever expect to receive. The same hospital chain may charge more in one city than another for the same service. And to top it all off, the prices are effectively a secret.

Most hospitals take a "less is more" approach when it comes to posting prices. Hospitals can? voluntarily publish their prices, but many state laws protect hospitals if instead they choose to keep their prices secret. Sign our petition to the Hospital Association groups demanding that all their hospitals start publishing their prices by insurance company so each of us can shop and compare!

Stop The "Cat Cutters": ask China for animal protection laws

Probably a%uFFFD lot of you have received a video referring to "cat cutters".
When I received it I felt sick for the whole day. In the video there are%uFFFD Chinese kids filming each other while tying cats to trees, and torturing them to death, through horrible unspeakable sufferance that can be read in the eyes of the victims. The animals are slowly skinned alive.%uFFFD At the beginning of the video a woman is seen in the background rushing past the scene with her child, for some reason ignoring the situation.

I believe this is the bottom of the pit, and something MUST be done about it. There must be legal prosecution against these crimes. Let's ask the government of China to take action against these brutalities. Animal protection laws need to be created, and individuals who do such hideous crimes need to be punished.

No More Baby Mountain Lion Deaths!

When wardens at the California Department of Fish and Game put in a request for a pole syringe and tranquilizing drug to easily handle two loose mountain lions, they should have followed through. Instead, they forewent the safe method and murdered the two cubs.

Experts say they were most likely orphaned siblings, which explains why they were wandering the area and taking shelter in crawl spaces. Around nine months old, the mountain lions weighed only 25 - 30 pounds each when spotted near the edge of downtown Half Moon Bay.

Organizations, such as Wild Rescue, have formed specifically to prevent these occurrences. They hope to be called on when wild animals roam into Bay Area residential areas.

With better instruction in handling wildlife, these wardens may not have needlessly killed the cats instead of tranquilizing them.

Ask the California Department of Fish and Game to establish protocols for handling wildlife in residential spaces.
