Push for an Urgent Recovery Plan for the Incredibly Rare Mexican Gray Wolf

Push for an Urgent Recovery Plan for the Incredibly Rare Mexican Gray Wolf

Only ~110 of these wolves are estimated to remain in the wild.  We're fighting in court to keep this ultra-rare subspecies of the gray wolf from extinction. But today we need your help to put additional pressure on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Department of Interior.  The Fish and Wildlife Service is finally beginning work on a recovery plan for the endangered Mexican gray wolf, an iconic species of the American Southwest. Unfortunately, the governors of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado, bowing to pressure from ranchers and anti-wolf interests, are fighting to undermine recovery efforts.  Contrary to what the politicians are telling the federal government, scientific studies show that to create a sustainable population, these wolves need more habitat and multiple, interconnected populations, totaling more than 700 wolves.  Given their low numbers, genetic diversity should also come into consideration before any killing of these wolves is authorized.  For years, these wolves have struggled to survive in the wild—yet politicians continue to hinder their recovery.  Time is of the essence to save these wolves! Take action now to ensure their survival.

HELP SAVE DOGS OF INDIA! ANIMAL CRUELTY IS WRONG

A family in Kovalam, near Chennai (Madras) in Tamil Nadu are mourning the death of Tokki, their five-year-old dog who was shot in early August after the official village council ordered the killing of strays in the area."Tokki had slipped out of the house and gone to the beach when I heard shots," R Mohan, a fisherman, told BBC Hindi.Mr Mohan says he ran outside shouting for the shooting to stop, but Tokki, who had clearly been mistaken for a stray, was hit by a bullet and collapsed near the house."He may have still escaped if he was a little faster," he said. The family believes that the village council president Mr Janakiraman, is to blame for their dog's death and want him punished. Mr Janakiraman says the decision to kill dogs was taken collectively by villagers. Most villagers in fact, have expressed their support for the culling of stray dogs, alleging that they regularly attack children. Around 15 dogs are believed to have been shot, and their carcasses thrown into the sea.'A menace'Mr Mohan's daughter Priyanka, 18, said the family have not been able to eat or sleep properly since Tokki's death. Her 11-year-old sister who had been inconsolable had only just gone back to school, she added."Tokki was like our son, as we do not have any male children. Ever since I found Tokki as an abandoned pup, we have considered him a family member," Mr Mohan said.Members of Blue Cross, an animal welfare group, rushed to the village when they heard about the shootings and registered a police case against the village council president and a man believed to have been hired by the council to carry out the shootings. But soon afterwards, around 200 villagers turned up at the police station, demanding that the case be withdrawn. They alleged that the decision to shoot the dogs had been taken only because their complaints against the growing menace of stray dogs had gone unheard.Dawn Williams of Blues Cross admitted that stray dogs were a serious concern, but said that rubbish dumps in the area were to blame."The large amounts of garbage give dogs plenty of food, which is why they multiply so rapidly," he said.Authorities are worried. More than 100,000 people suffered dog bites in Tamil Nadu last year. This year 60,000 people had been bitten by July. The government is now planning to set up 500 sterilization centers in the state to bring down the canine population.

Ensure Important END Wildlife Trafficking Act Becomes Law

Ensure Important END Wildlife Trafficking Act Becomes Law

Wildlife trafficking is an ongoing issue on a real global level where animals are poached and killed for their body parts. There is such a high demand for products that come from poaching and wildlife trafficking that includes species such as tigers, rhinos and elephants. This illegal trade is of high concern and the effort to stop wildlife trafficking in the USA is to encourage the passage of a law for “END Wildlife Trafficking Act”.”
As an animal lover and advocate for their well-being, I hope you will consider supporting this issue to stop wildlife trafficking. You can read more about the END Wildlife Trafficking Act and support to put it into law at https://secure3.convio.net/wcs/site/Advocacy;jsessionid=C22158288B4E1D2E5312CF8E47819F44.app303a?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=808&utm_medium=email&utm_source=WCS&utm_campaign=owned&utm_content=2016121CAMP_EndWildlifeTrafficking&s_src=CAMP_EndWildlifeTrafficking&s_subsrc=CAMP_End-Wildlife-Trafficking&autologin=true.  I am hopeful that all members of Congress can take important steps to ensure this act becomes law.
Killing these precious animals are cruel and unjust crimes, acts that seem to get dismissed and often unnoticed.  I hope you will work with me in strong efforts to save all these endangered species from wildlife trafficking since they cannot protect themselves.  The effort is to encourage your local Senators and the U. S. Congress members as a whole to fully support the passage and full enforcement of the END Wildlife Trafficking Act. If you would like to join the effort, please sign and share this petition, adding your own comments that would help in getting the results to put an end to wildlife trafficking.

Allow UK public institutions to boycott unethical goods!

Allow UK public institutions to boycott unethical goods!

Public institutions in the UK - including local councils and some universities - have been banned from boycotting unethical goods, with a threat of "severe punishments" if they do so.On 15 February 2015 the government announced that public bodies were not allowed to boycott goods without a UK-wide government decision. This new procurement policy was announced without any parliamentary debate or vote. Previously, public bodies would have been able to boycott companies on ethical grounds such as animal welfare, environmental concerns, or human rights. In 2014 Leicester council decided to boycott goods produced in the West Bank, followed by four Scottish councils. Some local authorities and student unions boycott Nestle products over concerns about its over-zealous marketing of baby milk formula. The new Government policy outlaws these kinds of procurement decisions.A spokesperson for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said that this ban "would have outlawed council action against apartheid South Africa". The UK economics relations programme director has warned that the move will remove any "incentive" for companies to ensure there aren't human rights abuses in their supply chains if public bodies can't hold them to account by choosing who to award contracts. Please sign this petition and share it. If enough people sign, the Prime Minister will see that our councils and universities should have a right to boycott companies whose actions we find unethical. You can also tweet Prime Minister David Cameron at @David_Cameron.

Wild Things: Stop Forcing Baby Tigers to Swim with Tourists

Wild Things: Stop Forcing Baby Tigers to Swim with Tourists

A zoo in Florida is charging $200 to allow visitors to swim with a baby tiger for 30 minutes - and forcing the tigers to stay in the water even when they want to get out. Sign this petition to demand that the zoo owners stop this cruel, selfish scheme.Being forced into a pool to swim with strangers is distressing for the tiger cubs, which were noted to be much too young to even be separated from their mothers, which leads to stress and fear for the baby that is then forced to encounter strangers. The cubs were witnessed crying while trying to climb out of the water while a handler prevented the escape. PETA investigated and documented a caretaker at the establishment as they "lowered a young tiger into a pool by the tiger's tail, pulled the tiger's tail in order to restrain it while it was in the pool, and pulled the young tiger out of the pool by the tiger’s right front leg."
These activities are cruel and ridiculous. The USDA has filed a complaint against the zoo for mistreatment of animals, but the Dade City, Florida zoo responded saying "we are going to keep doing it until the Supreme Court or God comes down and says stop doing it."
These animals need to be with their mothers, not be exploited for monetary gain as a form of entertainment.  Help us send a message to "Wild Things" zoo demanding they immediately stop selling tickets to swim with tiger cubs. If enough of us speak out, we can convince the owners that the public doesn't want to see this kind of exploitation.

Terminating State Testing

Terminating State Testing

State Testing is ineffective in Oklahoma. They waste money, cause too much stress, and aren't fair tests. State testing is like asking a walrus, a shark, a monkey, and an elephant to see who can climb a tree the fastest. The tests test a variety of students who each have different talents. The tests are ineffective because the results do not come back until months after. The student could be in a different grade so the results would have no relevance as to how the student can improve. According to standarizedtests.procon.org, since 2008 state testing has costed 1.1 billion dollars for the United States.

Lower the school leaving age to 16

Lower the school leaving age to 16

In England and Wales on September 1st 1972 the education leaving age was raised from 15 to 16 following preparations 8 years earlier. In September 2013 the education leaving age was raised to 17, and in September 2015 it rose to 18.It is important because 16 years old's should be allow to work if they have the proper qualifications and it is a disgrace that children are being forced to stay in education until they are a minimum of 18 years old.
