Tell Chris Christie and New Hampshire -- Don't Slaughter Bobcats

Tell Chris Christie and New Hampshire -- Don't Slaughter Bobcats

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is no friend of wildlife. Asked recently about a proposal to allow the slaughter of bobcats in New Hampshire, Christie told a crowd: "For all of you who want bobcats killed, I'm your guy."  Bobcats have been protected in New Hampshire since 1989, when decades of hunting and trapping had driven the state's population of these beautiful felines down to only 200 animals. Now, with demand from the international fur market driving up prices for bobcat pelts, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department has proposed ending the ban. If it does, hunters could use dogs, bait and indiscriminate traps to slaughter bobcats and sell their furs to Chinese and Russian fashionistas.  Not only is this proposed slaughter senseless and cruel, but traps set for bobcats can badly hurt endangered species like Canada lynx -- as well as pets and even people.  Take action -- Tell Chris Christie and New Hampshire officials that killing bobcats for the foreign fur trade is unacceptable.

Urge The Florida Legislature To Pass A Paid Family and Medical Leave Law!

Urge The Florida Legislature To Pass A Paid Family and Medical Leave Law!

Each year, millions of new parents in the U.S. are forced to choose between raising their families or keeping their jobs. The United States only requires employers with 50 or more employees to offer 12 weeks of unpaid leave - and we're the only developed nation in the world not to offer paid family and medical leave. This situation has dramatic effects on parents, children, and the economy at-large, with only 12 percent of families having access to paid leave. Lack of paid family and medical leave has significant and lasting effects on families and seniors. Nearly half of new mothers have to take unpaid leave, and a quarter either quit or are let go from their jobs when a new child arrives. For mothers who do take unpaid leave, a third are forced to borrow money, use their savings, and/or put off paying bills, and 15 percent even have to depend on public assistance to survive. Similarly, three-quarters of fathers are only able to take just a week or less off work. And although the number of seniors who will need long-term care services will more than double by 2050, 62 percent of caregivers still have full-time jobs and would need paid leave to afford caring for their loved ones. The benefits of providing paid leave are clear, by helping keep people in the labor force and expanding it; reducing turnover and employment interruptions; and ensuring that workers who take leave go back to their original jobs. California’s paid leave program is already saving employers $89 million a year in reduced turnover costs.Urge the Florida legislature to pass a paid family and medical leave law, and help protect families and grow our economy!

Don't Let Chicago Fire Teachers Midyear!

Don't Let Chicago Fire Teachers Midyear!

The Chicago Public School system is broke. Instead of coming up with creative solutions, the system's board of education is taking the easy way out: fire teachers. This is a terrible idea for many reasons. Student learning depends a great deal on continuity and a positive bond with teachers. Any plan that takes trusted educators out of the classroom in the middle of a school year is going to be terribly disruptive to the curriculum and to learning outcomes. Furthermore, the number of students stays the same. The only way you can fire teachers is to increase class sizes. That's entirely counter-productive to learning. Students who need individual attention will not get it. Even strong students are likely to lose motivation and become distracted within a crowded class. Please join me in asking the Chicago Public Schools Board of Education not to lay off teachers as a way of dealing with the budget crisis.

Compassion Isn't a Crime: Giving Thirsty Pigs Water Isn't a Crime

Compassion Isn't a Crime: Giving Thirsty Pigs Water Isn't a Crime

On the summer day of June 22, a Van Boekel Hog Farms slaughterhouse transportation truck headed to Fearman's Pork Inc. was stationary, Anita Krajnc, the co-founder of Toronto Pig Save, and another activist stopped to give the pigs water and document their experience. The driver confronted the two women and told them to stop giving the pigs water. While Krajnc asked the driver to show compassion, he threatened her with physical assault and called the police. Now Krajnc is being charged with criminal mischief -- interference with the use, enjoyment of and operation of property -- under $5,000 for showing thirsty pigs compassion. Although there are reports that she's willing to go to jail. Compassion is NOT criminal! Why do inmates on death row get a last meal, but innocent pigs are denied water? Why are praised for helping thirsty dogs and cats, but charged as criminals for helping pigs? Please sign and share this petition showing your support for Anita Krajnc's important work because giving thirsty and dehydrated pigs water should never be a crime.

Hold Jeremy Hunt accountable for lying: NHS junior contract imposition was not supported!

Jeremy Hunt has been caught lying in order to force through a new junior doctor's contract against the will of NHS staff. He claimed support for an imposed contract from 20 NHS chief executives. But 11 out of the 20 executives have said that they had not offered their support, and hoped for further negotiations. Please sign this petition to demand that Jeremy Hunt is held to account for his wilfull deceit, both by his party and by the High Court.Doctors say that the new contract will lead to unsafe working conditions and put patients at risk. But Jeremy Hunt has ended negotiations and is attempting to force hospitals to accept his terms. Now it is clear he has no interest in democracy, and is willing to lie to the public to get his way.Jeremy Hunt is a publicly appointed figure with a huge amount of power over our daily lives. His actions make him unfit for public service. Please sign this petition to demand that The Government and the High Court perform a transparent and just enquiry into Jeremy Hunt's intentional deception of the public.

Tell Congress: Support Lifesaving Humanitarian Assistance For Millions of Families

Any day now, Congress will begin to decide what programs to fund – and what programs to cut. On the chopping block is International Disaster Assistance and Migration and Refugee Assistance funding – which includes lifesaving emergency aid for Syrians and the millions of other families who will experience a humanitarian crisis this year.  President Obama's proposed budget woefully underfunds humanitarian aid programs. For example, he is recommending cutting funding for international disasters by 30 percent. Fortunately, Congress can fix this – but it's going to take all of us raising our voices together to make sure they get the job done.  Over the last several years, the gap between humanitarian funding needs and what is actually provided has widened significantly. In 2015, less than half of the money requested by humanitarian organizations to respond to crises was ultimately funded.  With so many innocent lives at stake, this is outrageous. Congress can help right this imbalance, but they need to hear from you. Raise your voice and tell your Representative and Senators to increase the funding for International Disaster Assistance and the Migration and Refugee Assistance Accounts.

Canada: Support Freedom of Speech and Stop your Condemnation of the BDS Movement

Canada: Support Freedom of Speech and Stop your Condemnation of the BDS Movement

The BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) Movement is a grassroots movement to publicly condemn the Israeli military's occupation of Palestine which the UN has condemned as being an "affront to international law". This movement includes many Jewish groups, the United Church, the Quakers as well as campus groups across Canada. It is a peaceful and democratic means of calling account to a gross violation of both international law and human rights in Palestine. However, the Canadian government is calling the movement anti-semitic and wrong. They recently backed a motion to publicly condemn all support for the BDS movement in Canada. This takes away Canadians fundamental right to peaceful and democratic protest and freedom of speech. If Canadians are unable to publicly express their views in a peaceful and democratic fashion the very fabric of the country's democracy is threatened. Sign today to support the growing number of Jews, faith groups and students in the BDS movement. Tell the government that freedom of speech in Canada is important and these vital voices for peace and following international law must be given an opportunity to be heard.
