Urge the Kenyan Government to Take Action and Prevent Elephant - Human Conflicts

An elephant in Kenya has been killed after it was electrocuted by an electric fence that had been constructed by farmers to protect crops, according to a report in allafrica.comWildlife officers believe farmers may have targeted the elephant after recent crop damage along with the deaths of several locals. It's alleged farmers have raised electric fencing around their farms in order to protect their crops, however, the voltage is raised to a level that is lethal enough to kill an elephant, and is much higher than levels used on KWS fences. The story reports: "According to a resident who requested anonymity, they have been forced to electrocute the beasts after KWS failed to repair the fence that surrounds the forest."We decided to go to an extra cost of installing the electric wires and pay electricity bills in order to protect our lives and our farm produce," he said.Mr Joseph Thuranira, a farmer, said the beasts have destroyed all crops on his farm this season."Our lives are at risk because we spent most of our time protecting our farms. We are having sleepless night chasing the elephants," said Mr Thuranira.Elephants in Kenya need to be protected, as do the livelihoods of farmers. More needs to be done to prevent human - elephant conflicts. Will you join me in urging the Kenyan Government to provide more funding to the Kenyan Wildlife Service to improve fencing between farms and wildlife reserves, along with patrols to ensure farmers have not raised electric fencing to levels to a voltage that will kill wildlife? Please sign and share the petition.

Urge the NSW Government to Overturn its Decision to Allow a Bow Fishing Trial - Natives Species Could be Put at Risk

The New South Wales government has given the green light to a bow fishing trial in an effort to curb carp fish populations which are damaging the environment, according to a report in smh.com.auOpposition to the trial has been expressed by academics, environmentalists and politicians who have sent submissions to the government "warning that native and threatened species including the platypus could end up as "collateral damage". The report states: "Ecologists Dr Tom Grant from the University of NSW and Professor David Goldney from Charles Sturt University have expressed concerns about the difficulty in distinguishing carp from wildlife or native fish species, especially in turbid waters."Dr Grant is concerned that wildlife such as the platypus, the native water rat, the water dragon, turtles and diving birds could be mistaken for carp.
"There are a lot of native species that could end up as 'by-catch' or 'collateral damage'," Dr Grant said. It was unlikely that hunter/fishers would report accidental kills, he said.Native species cannot be put at risk. Will you join me in urging the NSW Government to overturn its decision to allow a bow fishing trial and look for alternatives to control noxious fish species such as carp? Please sign and share the petition.

Protect the Caribou: Implement the Nunavut Land Use Plan

Protect the Caribou: Implement the Nunavut Land Use Plan

Barren-ground caribou populations are in serious decline, losing about 95% of the population in the last 30 years. This horrific depopulation is a result of many human and environmental factors coming together, including climate change and mining development in the Arctic.Caribou are very sensitive in their calving grounds. Even small disturbance can cause failed reproduction, calf abandonment and mortality. The Nunavut Land Use Plan offers a solution. It recommends that caribou calving and post-calving grounds become protected from development like mining. By protecting these critical areas caribou are given a better chance at reproduction and preserving their population. Sign today to give a voice to the caribou and stand for their protection in the Arctic.
Even if the Nunavut Land Use Plan is implemented, as it is, the federal government still has the ability to grandfather in current mining and development projects. The proposals of conservation and protection must be binding and not subject to grandfathering projects in. The conservation of these precious animals must be the number one priority, instead of corporation mining interests.
Sign today to protect these majestic Arctic animals.

Tell Congress: Support the Paris Climate Agreement

Tell Congress: Support the Paris Climate Agreement

We are at a turning point. Climate change and related extreme weather events are already impacting our communities and the natural resources we depend on. Droughts and flooding are becoming more intense, the oceans are becoming more acidic, our water supplies are shrinking, agricultural yields are dropping, sea levels are rising, and forests are burning in unprecedented wildfires. Extreme weather events are costing American communities billions of dollars annually. If we do nothing, these impacts threaten to grow increasingly severe and costly over time. But the climate agreement reached in Paris offers us a real opportunity to act together to limit the damage and ensure a safer future for our children. We must seize this historic opportunity. Take action today and tell your members of Congress to support the Paris agreement.

URGENT! This Sunday Yulin Will Hold Meat Festival And Kill Cats And Dogs. PLEASE Help Us STOP This!

The June 21 China festival of Yulin must be shut down IMMEDIATELY! They are stealing family pets, as well as stray cats and dogs to eat their meat. They also use the animals for fur! They cook the dogs and cats alive. They believe when the adrenaline increases from the animals pain, the meat tastes better. This is inhumane and tortuous. PLEASE sign to stop this horrendous animal cruelty. Thank you in advance!

Ask California Legislators to Regulate Animal Cruelty Registry for Offenders

Ask California Legislators to Regulate Animal Cruelty Registry for Offenders

Several animal rights groups have been pushing for an animal abuse and cruelty registry in California but most attempts have met with much opposition.  Such a database would be highly beneficial in protecting animals from future abuse.  The possible expense involved in such a registry is nothing compared to what animals endure at the hands of someone with little regard to their feelings and respect. Read more information at http://www.sspca.org/program-services/abuse-and-neglect/ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/01/animal-abuse-registry_n_4195903.html
It is not clear why animal activists and organizations would oppose such a registry although the humane society feels such a database would be shaming of mentally unstable people that are unlikely to threaten pets of neighbors checking the list of offenders.  Such issues would be determined through the legal system and does not warrant cruelty to animals.  There are many more benefits for the animals targeted by abusers and can be crucial in their protection and well-being.
It is important that we all take steps to protect animals from further abuse.  Despite the history and background of anyone who abuses a poor defenseless animal, there has to be some type of protection for these creatures.  They are living and breathing beings that do not deserve to be treated inhumanely and we must step up and be their voice.  Our efforts in this petition is to encourage the California State Legislators to give some serious consideration to this matter and implement an animal abuse and cruelty registry.  You can help us in our efforts by signing and sharing this petition.
