Daily Voice : Abolish the Dog Meat Trade in the Philippines
« Reply #520 on: December 12, 2014, 12:00:15 AM »
Abolish the Dog Meat Trade in the Philippines

In the Philippines, every year, a half a million dogs are killed and consumed in the illegal dog meat trade. The dogs, (often stolen pets), are rounded up with their snouts tied shut and their front legs tied behind their back. Thousands die from suffocation during transport to makeshift slaughterhouses, where they have their throats slit while they are fully conscious of pain.

Despite new legislation, the illegal dog meat trade is continuing to florish in the Philippines, because authorities will not enforce the law. We ask the President of the Philippines to enforce the trade laws, and abolish this brutal and barbaric dog meat industry.

Stand Up for 100% Clean Energy!

It's becoming clearer and clearer every day the dangers posed to our environment by dirty energy. Our sea levels are rising, our ice caps are melting, and people and animals across the world are facing devastation from continued climate change.

Despite the risks, clean energy is still undersupported across America.

It doesn't have to be that way, though. The more we support clean energy in our own homes, the more demand we will create, and the more of our power supply will shift away from dirty fossil fuels towards clean, renewable power!

For the sake of our families, communities, and environment it's time to say no to planet polluting fossil fuels and yes to a new energy future.

Take action today: Add your name and help us create the demand that will bring clean energy to our homes and transition our power off dirty fuel for good!

Daily Voice : Don't leave the Sumatran rhino to die!

Don't leave the Sumatran rhino to die!

The Sumatran rhino is listed as critically endangered, with approximately 100 believed to be alive in the wild. Numbers more than halved between 1985 and 1995, primarily due to poaching.

But thanks to Australia promising funds, results in protecting them started already started looking so much more positive.

Last year, then foreign minister Bob Carr announce the government would provide $3m over three years to fund existing projects.

Fast-forward to today, and the foreign minister Julie Bishop has decided not to proceed with the program.

For the Australian government to pledge support and then back out, it’s potentially pretty devastating to the Sumatran rhino.

At a time when rhinos around the world are in danger of extension, the Sumatran is most critical, and a mere $3m to save an entire species in not much in the scheme of things.

We urge you, Julie Bishop, please think of the consequences of your actions. In fact we urge you to do more than just $3m. Imagine a world where your children, or grandchildren will only ever see what a Rhino looked like from old photographs, found in old wildlife magazines which no longer go to print, as there are no more animals to capture with a camera.

Stand Strong for Elephants

Every 15 minutes, on average, a poacher kills an elephant for its ivory tusks. Right now, the U.S. is the second biggest market for ivory — much of it likely from recently poached elephants — which means we are helping to pay the bills for these poachers, organized crime networks, militant groups and the others who are profiting from extinction. Fortunately, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service recently proposed strong new protections for African elephants, including a ban on the sale of non-antique ivory in the United States.

Some special interest groups are trying to weaken the new rules, which has prompted IFAW to band together with a coalition of scientists, artists, and conservation and animal welfare organizations to ensure that these protections stay as robust as possible. By signing our petition, your voice can help us convince the White House to stand strong for elephants.

You can help protect elephants by joining us in telling President Obama and Dan Ashe, Director of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to stand strong for elephants.

Inflict Fines and Punishment For People In Ohio With Exotic Pets Without License by Deadline

Please sign and share this petition on all your media sites nationwide in an effort to get Ohio to implement severe fines for people who did not get their licenses for exotic pets by the deadline earlier this year. All residents of the state were required to get a license for their exotic pets by the end of January, although it is estimated that one in three will not! There needs to be an incentive in the form of punishment and/or stiff fines for those who fail to comply.

Ohio state law has openly expressed the need for owners of exotic pets to acquire a license by January of 2014. The deadline for these licenses or permits has been generously extended so that all people could comply; however, it is estimated that at least one in three pet owners will fail to comply. Such stipulations were made several years ago when an exotic zoo owner of lions, tigers and bears on his property without such licenses.

The owner who released his pets into the town’s neighborhood was suicidal, and did not want his pets to starve to death in their enclosures. The ensuing chaos caused police to hunt down his exotic animals and shoot most of them before they could harm the civilian population. His wild cats and bears prowled neighborhoods as people lived in fear in their homes.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture only issued 23 exotic pet permits as opposed to the 82 applications they received. Applications need to receive departmental approval as they await further information regarding the owner’s animals. In addition to getting the permits, owners are also required to have a bond or liability insurance when owning special exotic pets. This appears to be an issue for many of the animal owners due to difficulties finding companies that will issue the insurance required at affordable rates.

Often times, people do not want to give up the pets that have nurtured and cared for their entire lives; yet many of these exotics are not always insurable by companies. The struggle to comply with state law, and keep emotions intact has been difficult for some owners. There have been many exotic pet owners that have either relocated themselves or their animals to other states, or even surrendered their animals to the state. While the process proves difficult for some, there are still many other states that will not even allow such animals to be kept as pets, making Ohio one of the few places where you can legally do so.

Even though Ohio is one of the few states to allow pet owners to keep their exotic pets, it is imperative that they comply with the requirements for insurance, bonding and permits. Daily Voice : Tell Moscow Sea Park to Stop Torturing Orcas!

Tell Moscow Sea Park to Stop Torturing Orcas!

After 10 months of speculation and a police investigation, a Moscow aquarium finally confirmed reports of secretly housing two wild-caught orcas, which they planned to showcase later as a "surprise" to guests.

Visitors to Moscow’s VDNKh park (also called the All-Russia Exhibition Centre) reported hearing "terrifying screams" and loud splashing water. Activists asked about the orcas and noticed fish and salty puddles outside a locked fence, but park staff claimed there were no animals behind the scenes. Only a police investigation revealed the presence of orcas, but authorities can't do anything because no laws are being broken.

The orcas -- a 7-year-old female named Narnia and an unnamed 5-year-old male, were captured in November 2013 from the Sea of Okhotsk in Russia's Far East. Activists expect they will meet the same fate as SeaWorld's orcas, such as lack of exercise, self-destructive and stereotyped behavior and isolation from normal social groups. They might also lash out violently against trainers, as SeaWorld's orcas have.

Please sign the petition to tell the All-Russia Exhibition Centre to release these two orcas back to the sea where they belong.

Daily Voice : Tell Yahoo! Japan to Stop Selling Whale Meat!
« Reply #527 on: December 18, 2014, 12:00:19 AM »
Tell Yahoo! Japan to Stop Selling Whale Meat!

People still consume whale meat in Japan, despite international backlash and an international ban enacted in 1986. A loophole that allows whale meat used in "scientific research" to be sold for profit allows the practice to continue.

Recently, a California sushi restaurant called "The Hump" was caught illegally serving endangered Sei whale meat. The restaurant owner admitted that he was aware his chefs were serving the meat and that they knew it was illegal.

Most large tech companies, including Japan's Amazon.com and Google Shopping Japan, have stopped selling whale meat. Yahoo! Japan is the only remaining tech company that still does. They host over 1,000 whale meat offerings, including minke whales caught in the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary, and endangered fin and sei whales caught in the Northwest Pacific. Please sign the petition to urge Yahoo! Japan to stop selling whale meat!
