Daily Voice : Tell the Federal Government to Cancel Endangered Rhino Hunt!

Tell the Federal Government to Cancel Endangered Rhino Hunt!

Professional hunter Corey Knowlton bid $350,000 for the chance to kill an endangered black rhinoceros in Africa. The Dallas Safari Club in Texas promoted the auction as an effort to save endangered rhinos at the cost of the one that will be hunted for a rare trophy.

Knowlton applied for a permit last spring for the right to bring the rhino's remains back to the U.S. as a trophy. Because of a rise in poaching (the main reason rhinos are endangered in the first place), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is applying extra scrutiny to Knowlton's request. The Safari Club says they will cancel the hunt if the government denies Knowlton's request.

Selling the chance to kill a rhino is an irresponsible and hypocritical way to promote conservation. It glamorizes hunting and paints endangered animals as trophies and commodities rather than living beings to be respected. Please sign the petition to urge Fish and Wildlife to deny Knowlton's application and cancel the hunt!

Stop the yearly Tiger Cub "lease" by Ohio's Massillon Washington High School

Ohio's Massillon Washington High School Boosters claims leasing a new declawed baby Tiger cub called "Obie" each year, forcing it to live in a garage, subjecting it to the extreme stresses of loud crowds and very harsh lights until he or she is discarded for a new Obie each August is an "important tradition." Brian Pachis, assistant athletic director, told an ABC news affiliate that the tradition of having a live tiger cub mascot extends back several decades. “We normally get them in early August and keep them just through the football season,” he said.

It is my belief that the Massillon Washington High School Boosters have done little to nothing to care for a reputed four decades of traumatized cubs once they are no longer useful.  Shockingly, record keeping of the cubs later whereabouts does not appear to exist prior to 2012. Potentially the cubs may have either been euthanized, sold for canned hunts, slaughtered for the tiger body parts trade or ended up in cramped backyard breeding facilities of which Ohio has some of the worst.

"This tradition does nothing more than encourage the rampant breeding of more and more tigers who will spend 20+ years in a cage. There is no educational value to this other than teaching that tigers are expendable. Wild tiger babies typically spend up to 2 years with their mothers. To rip them from their mothers at such a tender age and put them in a cage and drag them out to be on display in front of noisy football crowds is cruel. As for the rest of their lives, they do not spend their days living in ideal conditions in a "zoo" or "sanctuary." Quite the contrary. Stump Hill Farm, their breeder, has been cited by the USDA for failure to provide veterinary care, repeatedly failing to provide environment enrichment and minimum space to primates kept in solitary confinement and suffering from psychological distress, failure to provide shelter from inclement weather, having filthy and foul-smelling enclosures, failure to provide drinking water, failure to maintain enclosures, and improper waste disposal. These declawed tiger cubs sometimes spend months living in a garage. They do not deserve the life they will face after leaving your school. "  - Wildcat Santuary

This barbaric yearly cub purchase is not about "school pride" it is a cruel practice and must be stopped. Massillon Washington High's actions allow one of the rarest mammals on earth to be at the mercy of the grossly unregulated US exotic pet trade and the inadequacy of the Ohio state government to consistently enforce their fledgling exotic pet laws. Please sign, share and speak up for Tigers and exotic animals in Ohio. Thank you!

Protect Polar Bears!

The Alaskan Arctic is home to incredible wildlife, from majestic polar bears, walruses, and other iconic species. But the wild home for these amazing species is vanishing with terrifying speed.

And right now, Shell is planning drill in the Arctic as soon as next year -- putting the lives of polar bears and more at risk of deadly oil spills. Just one misstep by Shell could doom this fragile habitat forever -- and the harsh conditions would make responding to such a disaster almost impossible.

Time is running out for the Arctic – and for the polar bears that depend on this environment for survival. That’s why your voice is needed.

Take action today and join our campaign to protect the Arctic. Send an urgent message to President Obama, urging him to make sure Shell is not allowed to drill in the Arctic next year.

Tell President Obama: Don't Wait, Reject KXL Now

Tell President Obama that now is the time for leadership.

Congress just narrowly failed to force an approval of the Keystone XL pipeline. But the Big Oil agenda will be back in full force when the Republican-controlled Congress resumes in the new year. That's why the president must reject Keystone XL now.

Every way you look at it, Keystone XL is an environmental nightmare. It would have devastating effects on the climate as it transports 35 million gallons per day of the world's dirtiest oil. And it would cut right through the heartland of America -- putting precious water, land, air and wildlife directly in harm's way.

Please take action now and demand an end to Keystone XL, once and for all, so our country can move on to debating real clean-energy solutions.

Daily Voice : Stop Cruel and Illegal Foie Gras Production

Stop Cruel and Illegal Foie Gras Production

To produce foie gras – or ‘fatty liver’ – ducks are confined in cages and force fed. This has been proven to be cruel, and is clearly illegal in Europe. And, yet, the European Commission continues to take no action.

Enough is enough. For years, animal welfare organisations have provided the Commission with a wealth of scientific evidence, detailed briefings, and formal complaints on the illegality of foie gras production. It is unacceptable for the Commission to prevaricate while tens of millions of animals suffer each year.

A new Commission recently took office in Brussels. And that new Commission has a new President. He needs to know, as he begins his five year tenure, that the production of foie gras is completely unacceptable.

You can help Compassion in World Farming and other animal welfare organisations break the stalemate on foie gras with your signature. Please sign the letter to the Presidents of the European Commission and the EU Agriculture Council today.

Stop Risky Offshore Drilling in the Arctic

The U.S. government may allow Shell to drill for oil and gas in the Arctic Ocean as soon as 2015

There’s a 75 percent chance of a large spill if oil companies like Shell are allowed to develop and produce in Alaska, according to a new environmental impact study. A major oil spill in the Arctic could have severe impacts on the marine environment and all the wildlife and people who depend it.

Join Ocean Conservancy in protecting the Arctic by telling the Bureau of Ocean Management to say no to risky offshore drilling in the Arctic.

Health Canada, Protect the Bees and Reject New Insecticide!

The bee population is currently on the decline throughout the world.  This is a concern as 25% of the world's crops are dependent on bees.  While there are several reasons for the decline in the bee population, insecticides are one of them.

Research has shown that neonicotinoids are found in the majority of dead bees, and only in a minority of alive bees.  This shows that neonicotinoids negatively affect the bee population.  However, Health Canada is still approving a new insecticide that is similar to neonicotinoids.

Tell Health Canada to protect the bees and reject this new insecticide!

Punish Teen Severely with Fines and Community Service For Killing & Hanging Bobcat for Fun!

Please sign and share this petition in an effort to get authorities to punish the teen appropriately for killing a school mascot, a bobcat and then hanging it for all to see on a goalpost. Despite the age of this teen, he needs to be held accountable for his actions with fines, community services and mandatory classes on proper respect and care of animals.

A rivalry between two high schools in Tennessee was taken too far when police said a student killed a bobcat before stringing it up by its neck on a goalpost. A 16 year old from the Coffee County Central was charged with killing the bobcat of season when students from the rival school Tullahoma High School found the animal, dead and hanging from their football goalpost.

Both schools were scheduled to play an annual football game that following game after the Friday after the incident. A Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency spokesman stated “That is not a good way to treat a critter for a prank, that’s for sure.” All this teen got was a slap on the wrist and $50 fine! This is not punishment enough to teach anyone that animals are not just things that deserve such deplorable treatment.
