Daily Voice : Ban the Consumption of Lion Meat in Illinois

Ban the Consumption of Lion Meat in Illinois

Illinois Representative Luis Arroyo has introduced a bill (HB 2991), the Lion Meat Act, that would make it unlawful for any person to slaughter a lion or for any person to possess, breed, import or export from Illinois, buy, or sell lions for the purpose of slaughter. The bill provides that it is unlawful to commercialize lion meat.
The African lion is listed as threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and is endangered in certain West African countries. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering protecting African lions under the Endangered Species Act, primarily to stop the trade in hunting trophies and lion skins that would prevent the sale of lion meat- but that hasnt happened yet, and there is no telling when it may happen (if it does at all).
In the meantime, the endangered animal is being raised on United States farms for slaughter, and tuning up on menus throughout the country.
We ask that Illinois Agriculture & Conservation Committee Members support the Lion Meat Act, (HB 2991), and make further slaughter for human consumption illegal, as the African Lion is facing extinction.

Daily Voice : Crack Down on the Growing Problem of Slavery

Crack Down on the Growing Problem of Slavery

Recently three women who were held as slaves for over 30 years were freed in the UK. The case highlights the problem of slavery in a shocking manner as they were held in a well to do neighborhood in London. One campaigner says the women were enslaved through "psychological shackles" and was indicative of a growing global industry.
One of the women is said to have been born into slavery and said of her 30 year experience that she felt "like a fly trapped in a spider's web". The captives were so terrified for their safety it took the charity that freed them weeks to gain their trust. Once they had built a strong relationship the women walked out and were swiftly moved to a safe location by police.
The case has led to a growth in awareness of the issue of slavery. British MP Frank Field says the case is the tip of the iceberg and made the connections of domestic worker abuse and slavery, often a factor in more commonly heard cases.
Right now there is a bill before the parliament the will require a maximum life sentence for those found guilty of slavery. We are demanding that the Cameron government make this a priority and put in place protections for those suffering at the hands of modern day slavers.

Daily Voice : Stop Nicotine Experiments on Animals

Stop Nicotine Experiments on Animals

The tobacco industry and federal government both are still funding nicotine and smoking experiments on animals. Every year in the U.S., hundreds of animals are harmed and killed in experiments to test the effects of nicotine and tobacco.
In Defense of Animals points out, "Animal experiments failed to demonstrate that exposure to cigarettes and tobacco smoke caused lung and other forms of cancer, which is now undisputed in humans."
So the point of continuing these cruel experiments is WHAT? Other than to collect government funding? We don't want our tax money to go towards conducting nicotine experiments on pregnant and newborn animals - we already know that pregnant mothers should not smoke. Stop testing and torturing animals in useless experiments to collect goverment funding.

Daily Voice : Pledge To Be a Voice for Animals

Pledge To Be a Voice for Animals

In the time it takes you to read this, at least one animal in the United States will be abused or beaten. It happens every 60 seconds — and it adds up to a shocking number of victims every year. Those innocent, helpless animals can't call for help, but you can.

From neglect to hoarding, dog fighting to puppy mills, animal abuse can happen at any time in any community. And because the ASPCA can't be everywhere at all times, we need you to be our eyes and ears on the ground. If you see an animal in danger, or suspect any form of cruelty in your area, speak up. Be their voice.

You can start by taking our pledge today.

I pledge to join the ASPCA in its steadfast commitment to end animal cruelty. I will:

- Learn the signs of cruelty and neglect
- Notify my local humane organization, animal control agency, or police precinct when I see signs of cruelty or neglect
- Set a good example for  others and talk to kids about how to treat animals with respect
- Fight for the passage anti-cruelty laws
- Support my local shelter or animal rescue organization

Tell World Leaders: Prioritize Sexual and Reproductive Rights!

In much of the world, women still don't receive the sexual and reproductive health care they want and need. And the consequences are dire.

Nearly 60 countries have stood up for sexual and reproductive health and rights, like family planning and safe, legal abortion. And as a key global partner, US leadership is needed to ensure that these rights are prioritized in the UN's post-2015 agenda, particularly in the areas of health, gender equality, poverty eradication, and education.

Join us in calling on the US Ambassador to the United Nations to encourage all world leaders to support a woman's right to make her own decisions about her own body.

China: It Shouldn't Be Legal to Mutilate Animals!

Photographic evidence shows two beggars in China's Fuzhou, Fujian province using a mutilated camel to draw sympathy and cash donations from passersby. They claim the camel was run over by a train, but in reality they chopped off the animal's hooves. Police confirm that mutilating animals is a new trend, but China has no laws against animal abuse, so there's nothing they can do.
Beggars used to mutilate themselves to garner sympathy, but the public has caught on. Now, they're harming animals to increase their cash flow. Beggars have been using that camel since April, and it continues to bring them lots of cash.
This barbaric practice does more than cause pain and suffering to animals. It forces passersby, including children, to view gruesome and disturbing displays as they go about their daily business. Beggars should not be rewarded for abusing animals and showing off their abuse for profit. Please sign the petition to urge the Chinese government to create legislation against animal abuse!

Daily Voice : Stop the Circus from Using Animals and Abusing Them!

Stop the Circus from Using Animals and Abusing Them!

Please sign and share this petition in an effort to save animals in the circus limelight from the abuse and cruelty they undergo while being trained. We all love the circus and enjoy seeing gorgeous animals perform so eloquently and gracefully, not realizing what they often undergo in order to learn roles. Animals are indeed smart and should not be abused in order to get them to perform; however, many trainers are extremely abusive!
An investigation is underway regarding allegations of abuse to dogs used for performances of the Shrine Circus in the Topeka, Kansas area. During a recent weekend show, many witnesses noted an abusive situation regarding some Alaskan Malamutes Act. The animals, on leashes, became entangled so the staff was noted punching the dogs in their faces while trying to pull them apart.
Other witnesses noted that "Even though the lights were turned out we still witnessed the kicking and hitting of the dogs. While the dogs were indeed attacking each other, the way the handlers were going about it to break them up them was unnecessary and downright abusive!" Reports are that these trainers in question were “transferred,” not fired and punished but transferred to abuse other animals they handle.
No one knows for sure what goes on behind closed doors and understands that the main concern of people in this industry only care about performance, money and how they look as a handler/trainer. They should not expect perfection from animals and those viewing the acts appreciate them for their charm and efforts. Do not expect anything but the best an animal can give; there is no excuse for abuse and cruelty of these circus animal acts.
Authorities need to look further into the handling and training of all these circus animals. Stop using animals in the acts rather than abuse them if they don’t “let you look good.” There is never any excuse for animal abuse.
