Daily Voice : Harsher Penalties for Ivory Smuggling

Harsher Penalties for Ivory Smuggling

An ivory smuggler was caught in March of 2013. He plead guilty to charges of smuggling 439 pieces of worked ivory through Kenya. He was fined $350.00 and set free.
The 50 year old Chinese man, Tian Yi, was arrested was by a joint security team comprising Kenya Airports Police Unit, Kenya Revenue Authority, Kenya Airways, and Kenya Wildlife Service at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on a flight between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Hong Kong.
The ivory was hidden in a suitcase; chopped into peices, painted brown and mixed with tree barks in an attempt to pass it off as traditional medicine. While the market value was over $5000 dollars, the man paid a fine of $350.00 and was set free.
We ask Kenya to impose harsher fines for smuggling, and imprisonment. Until smuggling is veiwed as a serious crime, with serious consequences, it will continue, and elephants will continue to be poached and killed. The situation with elephants has become critical- please adjust the laws to reflect that.

Tell Utah, Don't Let Schools Take Away Kids' Lunches When Parents Can't Pay

Uintah Elementary in Salt Lake City has apologized after its cafeteria staff seized and threw away about 40 children’s lunches last week. But is an apology enough? The incident left some children in tears and all wondering what was going on.What was going on, according to the school, was that a state child nutrition manager had the school send out unpaid account notices to parents, which some say they didn’t get. Children of those that didn’t pay up got their lunches taken away at check out, and they were offered an orange and milk instead. Most disturbing is that those lunches were thrown in the trash. The school did right by promptly apologizing and admitting that the situation should have been and would be handled differently in the future. But if this means children will be more quietly deprived of meals from now on, that’s not a solution.
Boston has joined other cities to show there's a better way - a "Community Eligibility Option” that provides free breakfast and lunch to all students.Ask Utah to take better care of its school children, and ensure they all get a full lunch in the future.

Daily Voice : Save Colorado's birds from toxic lead poisoning!

Save Colorado's birds from toxic lead poisoning!

I see far too many birds suffering from lead poisoning at the raptor-rehab facility where I work. In the space of just two weeks, we received a bald eagle and two turkey vultures with lead poisoning. The good news is that after pumping one of the turkey vultures' stomachs, we are almost ready to release both back into the wild!

Sadly, the bald eagle was not so lucky. The day I had to help euthanize her was the day I decided to work towards getting lead ammunition banned in Colorado.

There are two big problems with lead ammunition. First, birds eat the spent ammo they find in carrion and elsewhere, ingesting toxic poison. Furthermore, much lead shrapnel makes it to the dinner plates back home -- a dangerous meal for children and pregnant women.

California just passed a law banning lead ammunition to help both wildlife and public health. Colorado officials will consider doing the same thing at a November 13 hearing -- please sign my Care2 petition before their October 30 comment deadline!

DA - File Charges against Craig Emory Hayes for Stabbing a dog to death in Petsmart.

Vigilante justice must not go unpunished. We cannot let fear or ignorance define our actions. We will never condone the stabbing of a dog in a pet store. Clara was a target because of her breed, not because of her actions. This was an act of unadulterated animal abuse as well as a hate crime and we demand charges be filed.

Woodland Park Zoo: Honor Watoto's Life, Send Bamboo and Chai to a Sanctuary

The unexpected death of one of the Woodland Park Zoo's three elephants on Friday has left her supporters mourning and reignited the debate about their continued captivity in Seattle. Watoto, an African elephant who was taken from the wild at the tender age of two, has been on display at the zoo for more than four decades. She was found down and unable to get herself up when zookeepers arrived at work early that morning. According to a statement from the zoo, they tried to lift her with cloth straps and later with heavy machinery but were unsuccessful. Her health continued to deteriorate and the zoo made the "difficult decision" to euthanize her.Her advocates are hoping that her death will not be in vain and that it will serve as the wake up call the zoo needs to get it to do what it should have done a long time ago: retire it's remaining two elephants to a sanctuary where they can live out their days in peace. Please sign the petition urging Seattle officials to exercise their authority to move Bamboo and Chai to a sanctuary.

Daily Voice : Tell Animal Planet to Stop Practicing Animal Cruelty For Ratings

Tell Animal Planet to Stop Practicing Animal Cruelty For Ratings

Recently, cable network Animal Planet has shifted away from education and towards entertainment, including hit show Call of the Wildman (created in partnership with so-called "guided reality" production company Sharp Entertainment). Call of the Wildman centers around a rural Kentucky wildlife rescuer known as "Turtleman." In a months-long investigation, Mother Jones has uncovered that production on Call of the Wildman regularly breaches ethical standards and federal laws and the production team is often complicit in animal cruelty. One story in particular involves a trio of raccoon cubs that nearly died from being kept away from proper care by the production team. When an expert was contacted, she was told she had to agree to filming in order to extend her expertise. By the time the cubs were treated, they were nearly dead and one of them could not be saved. The investigation found records that Sharp entertainment lied about the capture of the raccoons, and that they contacted the expert several days ahead of filming—prolonging the animals' extreme suffering.Overall, the investigation by Mother Jones revealed members involved in production "using an animal that had been drugged with sedatives in violation of federal rules; directing trappers to procure wild animals, which were then 'caught' again as part of a script; and wrongly filling out legal documents detailing the crew's wildlife activities for Kentucky officials." These reality shows are not merely enhanced to emphasize the drama of the situation—they are scripted ahead of time to specifically involve certain species of animals in specific locations. The rest of the report includes other stories of animals being held, transported, and even sedated to fit the show's parameters.Sign the petition to tell Animal Planet not to sacrifice the well-being of animals for money and ratings.

Tell Senator Ted Cruz: We've Had Enough Of Your Hateful Rhetoric

As couples across the country celebrate more victories for marriage equality, Senator Ted Cruz has his feet firmly planted in the past: He wants to strip marriage rights from legally wed same-sex couples and introduce a constitutional amendment to block marriage equality.

But weรข??re not going to let him get away with it.

Sign the petition telling Senator Cruz that we will not give up on marriage equality and we will not ignore discrimination.
