Don't Make it Harder to Get Tested for Breast Cancer!

Cancer is estimated to be the leading cause of the burden of disease in Australia. In 2012, breast cancer was the leading cancer cause of the burden of disease in women in Australia. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women both in the developed and less developed world.
These are all scary figures. But one can be comforted to know that everything is being done to bring these figures down, to save more lives; to provide not only cures, but also methods of prevention. You would be wrong.
The federal court has ruled that a company may patent genetic material that has been extracted from the human body. This has serious repercussions for the future of medical research in Australia.
Gene patents are of great concern to the medical research community and to the medical profession.
The patenting of this material places limits on genetic testing, genetic research and the development of treatments and cures for genetically associated disease. In short: Gene patents suppress innovation.
So it is of great concern to learn that US-based Myriad Genetics and Genetic Technologies have patented a gene known as BRCA1. Mutated versions of this gene, which women can be born with, have been associated with an increased risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancers.  Yes you readcorrectly. Two bio-tech companies were granted the patent to a hereditary gene associated with an increased risk of cancer.
Gene patents are also a matter of enormous public interest and concern to the medical community to ordinary Australians, who will be shocked to find that their genes are owned by an unknown corporation.
While the case was before the court, the companies chose not to enforce their rights over the BRCA1 patent. We ask that they continue to do so.
Now we understand economics, and that Myriad Genetics and Genetic Technologies need to make money. But we also understand human rights. Health should not be a money game, and cancer not a source of income. Cancer is a human rights issue. Patenting something that needs to be researched limits the potential of discovery to a few minds. For a human rights issue, every available mind should be utilized, every idea looked at and every discovery praised. Not swept under the carpet due to a fear of a lawsuit.
We would remind Myriad Genetics and Genetic Technologies. Companies, which control access to the gene for testing and research, would be subject to public outrage if they tried to obstruct its wider use. We would also implore them to continue to not restrict access to BRCA1 for screening purposes. Lives are in your hands. Do the right thing.

Tell Koch Allies in Congress: Climate Change is Real

The Koch Brothers profit from producing toxic chemicals, harmful pollutants, carcinogens, and greenhouse gases, and they are funding climate deniers in Congress.

Only 3% of scientists worldwide reject climate change science, but in Congress, 56% of Republicans deny that climate change is real.

The oil baron Koch brothers have funneled unprecedented millions into 2014 Senate races to make sure that they will continue to profit from polluting our environment.

Take a stand and fight back against the Koch brothers. Letâ??s keep a Democratic Majority in the Senate and protect our environment.

Investigate Shelter & Not Allow Adoptions of Animals Without Spaying or Neutering

Please sign and share this petition in an effort to stop an animal shelter in the Sacramento area from adopting out their animals without having them spayed or neutered first, as is the practice with most adoption agencies. The reason there are so many adoptee, feral and stray animals is due to an overpopulation issue but the shelter feels it is acceptable to adopt the animals out without having them fixed; a law violation.
It has been discovered that the Front Street Animal Shelter in the Sacramento area is literally considering adopting out animals without having them spayed or neutered as is the common practice in such situations to prevent an escalation of pet populations. The director of the shelter states that “We’ve taken some calculated risks I guess. We’ve only when we’ve absolutely had to. Otherwise an animal may have to sit here for four to six weeks, and if that occurs then animals coming in have no place to stay and our kill rate goes up.”
The Front Street Animal Shelter was adapting to a new process in order to get more animals adopted quicker rather than following proper protocol. They got around the process by insisting that new owners come back with their animals for a later surgery date, which is not a guarantee that the animals would be fixed as promised.
An animal lover and spokesperson against the shelter's practices stated that “The people can have the best intentions that they will bring their new pet back to get spayed or neutered, but the animal escapes, goes out the front door or goes over the fence and then you end up having more animals." It appears that the new surgery unit at the shelter with one veterinarian and lack of funds is the main cause for a lack of performing the necessary spaying and neutering procedures prior to an adoption; definitely a poor decision.
Animal advocate says budget constraints should not be an excuse for potentially allowing unwanted breeding. “We certainly don’t need more animals. The shelter is struggling to keep up with the intake that it has." Join the Movement: Help get food to the people who need it most

How can 49 million people face hunger in a country that wastes billions of pounds of food? Here in America, there is more than enough food to feed every man, woman and child, yet one in six people, including more than one in five children, face hunger. The Feeding America nationwide network of food banks provides more than 3 billion meals to people in need each year, but there is more work to do. Even as the largest charitable food distribution system in the U.S., Feeding America currently captures less than 1 percent of wasted food. By rescuing more of this food loss, we see the potential for a revolution in hunger relief.  Pledge today and become part of the solution. Together, we can get food to people who need it.

Daily Voice : Install Video Cameras in Slaughterhouses and Factory Farms

Install Video Cameras in Slaughterhouses and Factory Farms

Place video cameras in slaughterhouses and factory farms to watch for improper procedures and inhumane handling of animals
Voluntary surveillance would be appropriate, as undercover investigations have found cows being chained, dragged, rolled, kicked and jabbed in an effort to make them stand and be led into a chute for slaughter. Workers prodded the animals with forklifts and shot powerful streams of water into their nostrils to induce them to move. These are just a few of the abuses out of thousands.
Video cameras are an excellent, economical supplement or alternative to hiring, training, and staffing more USDA inspectors. Video cameras would help create more transparency in animal agriculture and would likely result in better accordance with the laws protecting human health and preventing animal cruelty.

Support Indy the Pitbull Strapped with Fireworks & Ensure Abuser Severely Punished!

Please sign and share this petition to ensure that we get justice for Indy the Pitbull dog that was strapped with fireworks last Independence Day and left to die. This poor dog suffered some severe injuries; yet the abuser can be left with minor retribution unless we can get enough caring individuals to support Indy at the trial and sentencing. Otherwise this guy will walk with a slap on the wrist, only to repeat his actions again with other animals and more!!
Last fourth of July celebrations was not a total joyous occasion when a 3-year old American Staffordshire terrier dog was found abandoned and strapped with fireworks on him. The fireworks were set on fire, leaving severe injuries on his stomach, legs and paws. One of the volunteers at the Shelter Transport Animal Rescue Team (S.T.A.R.T.) that took the dog in and helped in his healing and recovery stated “It’s really hard to see an animal in this kind of pain. We saw him without the bandages. It’s horrific, it’s gory, and you can’t even imagine the pain he’s in."
Since the actual incident, an arrest has been made and Indy has been adopted by Jenny Mandel, a veterinary technician at Westlake Village Animal Hospital. She was an avid part of her care and recovery, falling in love with him and vowing to give him all the love and attention he deserves the remainder of his life. Indy got his name because of when he was discovered, during the Independence Day holiday.
The abuser, 41 year old Carlos Duarte was captured on surveillance cameras where he was strapped with the fireworks, set ablaze and then yanking the severely injured dog from the bed of his pickup truck and dumping him by a trash can, left to die! Tips from the public after the video was publicized led to the arrest of this warped individual!
Trial and court dates are in progress to get this scumbag sentenced. In the first court hearing only 3 people showed up to support this dog, meanwhile the abuser that did this has a whole family backing them up. However, lawyers are saying that the more people that show up to support the dog, Indy, the more they believe will be done for him. We can't let this guy or persons responsible off without being severely punished for such abuse! We as people cannot let these dirt bags just walk away with a slap on the wrist. If you’re able to show up and support Indy by prosecuting the abuser(s), that would be great - Van Nuys court house!! 14400 Erwin St Mall, Van Nuys, CA 91401 Van Nuys West Courthouse. Division 112, Room 511, 5th floor set for Tuesday 6/10/14 @ 8:30 am. Those who cannot personally be there for Indy, show your support to get the scumbag(s) prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law through this petition!
The good news is that Indy is recovering well and has a new, loving home provided by an owner who vows to smother him daily with more hugs and kisses each day than he can handle. The bad news is, if there is not enough support present for this precious animal, the scumbag(s) will literally get away with this horrendous crime, only to do it again to some other animal or more!

Daily Voice : Protect Endangered Animals From Pesticides!

Protect Endangered Animals From Pesticides!

More than one billion pounds of pesticides are sprayed in North America every year. Many have been linked to cancer and other negative health impacts. But what about the animals? The same chemicals that harm us are affecting our wildlife -- including 119 endangered species!
It's been studied many times by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), along with many scientific studies. Pesticides have negative health impacts on humans and animals. But the EPA holds a responsibility to protect our environment, including endangered animals like Florida panthers, black-voted ferrets, arroyo toads, Indiana bats and 100 more!
The EPA has neglected its duty to protect us and our animal friends. Despite irrefutable science, the EPA continues to approve and allow pesticide use in our country.
Sign the petition to call on the EPA to uphold its duty to protect endangered animals. We can't let toxic chemicals drive over 100 animals into extinction!
