Daily Voice : Save the Asiatic Lion in India From Death Traps

Save the Asiatic Lion in India From Death Traps

Please sign and share this petition in an attempt to encourage India to save the Asiatic Lion from common death traps affecting their mortality. Experts believe their deaths are due to human settlements infringing on their habitat and putting them at risk of auto accidents and other dangers. We need to ask the India Government Officials to consider a translocation program that can ban the animals from heavily populated areas of human settlements and move them where they have more space to survive without dangers.
Gir in India's Gujarat state is the home of the Asiatic lion but just in the past five years, more than 256 of these beautiful creatures have lost their lives with more at risk for survival. Experts believe it is due to their need to find a habitat amidst the new human settlements. In past years, the animal was in danger due to a big drought and increased hunting. However, a Mr. Khanji who was an animal lover with 300 dogs banned hunting and preserved the Asiatic lion of extinction.
Despite his efforts and that of the Gir sanctuary in Junagadh that outgrew its space to save more animals, the lion is again in peril. Often times the Asiatic lion is spotted on private farms, near village homes and many have been run over by speeding trucks and trains. Experts concerned about their decline stated "Lion numbers have increased, but the challenge is their safety. About 40% of the total lion population now lives outside the forest area. Open wells and live wires on farms, poachers and passing trains and trucks have turned this region into a death field for the Asiatic lion."
The Asiatic lion was placed on the list of critically endangered species in the year 2000 but removed from extinction in 2005. In current years, however, there are only about 411 lions in existence in the Gir forest and areas. "Although there is a decline in their numbers, only 20% are accidental deaths, which is a cause for concern but the situation is under control. Lions are territorial animals and they live in prides. They are moving out as a male needs an area of 50 sq km and a female needs 26 sq km."
The Asiatic lion is only doing what it does naturally in finding a place in society. They find their way onto people's farms where they are either killed or kill cattle and other farm animals in an effort to find food. The animals need to be protected and work through a translocation program although the Gujarat government does not feel comfortable with this idea. However, this government needs to take serious measures in protecting the Asiatic lion.
It has been stated that so far some work has been done in an effort to protect and save lions and the rehabilitation of the two villages that would get displaced when lions come to the national park. Recently, the apex court in a judgment had directed that the lions be translocated to Kuno-Palpur in MP from the Gir Sanctuary.   Why translocation of lions As Asiatic lions exist only in Gir, where they number over 400, experts have often expressed apprehensions that high rate of inbreeding and less genetic diversity could make them susceptible to epidemics and make them extinct.
These beautiful lions face constant threats from humans, epidemics and natural disasters, traffic vehicles and speeding trains. Activists are hoping to establish a new population of the Asiatic lion at the Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh where they could be safe from extinction. Gir forest officials state they have to provide security for farmers as well as the lions. "Wildlife management has now become more of human management. We have to work round the clock to ensure human life doesn't get affected as it's only due to the local people here that the lion population has survived. There has been no incident ever when a local has knowingly killed a lion."
The lions do not need to be infringing on people's property and farms. They need to be confined to the forests areas away from farms, highways and human settlements. Implementing a translocation program that would transport the lions to safer areas in Saurashtra so that the animal would have the space it needs to survive while keeping it away from the highly populated areas of Gir forestry regions.

Peru- Stop Killing Dolphins with Poison

In Peru, fishermen are using a cruel, (and dangerous), method for hunting dolphins; they immobilize dolphins by pouring pesticides and other toxic chemicals into the water to make them easier to catch.Poisoned and contaminated with heavy metals and organic pollutants such as PCBs, dolphins are then eaten, creating a very unhealthy situation for humans. This technique also poisons other marine life which villagers are dependant upon.Hunting dolphins is illegal under Peruvian law. We ask that the law be enforced and that this inhumane and dangerous practice be banned. It can never be a productive fishery as long as fishermen are permitted to contaminate it.SOURCE: http://www.internationalwhaleprotection.org/forum/index.php?/topic/4762-dolphins-killed-with-poison-in-peru-then-eaten/The International Whaling CommissionThe Red House,135 Station Road,Impington,Cambridge,Cambridgeshire CB24 9NP, UKTel:  +44 (0) 1223 233 971Fax: +44 (0) 1223 232 876Email:  [email protected] on Migratory Species Secretariat United Nations Premises  Hermann-Ehlers-Str. 1053113 Bonn, GermanyTel. Save Monarch Butterflies From Monsanto!

Monarch butterflies are dying off... and scientists now believe Monsanto is to blame.

Monsanto makes big profits off convincing farmers to douse their fields with a pesticide called Roundup. Then they make even more cash when the farmers have to buy GMO seeds resistant to Roundup's poison — seeds only Monsanto makes.

The problem is, the pesticide destroys plants like milkweed, the only food monarch butterfly larvae can eat. Milkweed is now gone from at least 100 million acres of crops. And monarch butterfly populations are crashing.

If we want to protect monarch butterflies, we need to get the government to step in. Send your message to the Obama administration right now -- and help us save monarch butterflies from Monsanto!

Daily Voice : Tell New York To Ban Super-toxic Rat Poisons

Tell New York To Ban Super-toxic Rat Poisons

New York's wildlife, pets and even children are being put at risk of poisoning by the continued use of super-toxic rat poisons.

Called second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides, these poisons induce a slow death by internal bleeding. And because they persist in body tissues, poisoned rats and mice are being turned into deadly meals for other animals up the food chain. More than 30 different New York wildlife species have been unintentionally poisoned -- from red-tailed hawks and great-horned owls to golden eagles and foxes.

The collateral damage from these rodenticides also includes pets and children who can be unintentionally poisoned as well. Safe, effective and inexpensive alternatives to these rat poisons are widely available -- it's simply unnecessary to keep these most hazardous poisons on the market.

Take action today -- tell New York officials that you support a ban on second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides to protect wildlife, pets and children.

My Husband Has Been Prevented from Leaving Kenya for Almost 4 Years -- Please Help Me Free Him!

Costs are soaring, please visit our fundraising page. I,m so embarressed to ask for help.
http://fnd.us/c/9rkk4/sh/a40Xg7
WE THOUGHT WE HAD A BOND SECURED YET STILL HE IS IN PRISON!!! This is getting ridiculous.
WHAT DO YOU WANT MOMBASSA????

My husband and I were going to move to Kenya when in Sept. 2011, someone made false child maintenance charges against him. He was acquitted in Kenyan court without charge, but his passport has been held by the Kenyan authorities for 3 years and he cannot get home. Please sign to ask UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office to ensure my husband gets home!
My husband Graham is 61, has diabetes and blood pressure. He has severe ulcerated legs.
After the charges were cleared in November 2013,the courts refused to return his passport. He tried to build a life in Kenya by starting a business with another man, but the authorities charged him with working without a permit (which he denies) or visa (which he can't get without a passport). They put him in prison for the 2nd time and are demanding money, which we don't have.
The prison cell is a hell hole. 70 men sleep head-to-foot on a floor in a room about 10 feet square. He can't eat as he cannot face using the toilet. He has recurring nightmares.
My husband has lived in poverty all this time. He has paid corruption bribes to get out of the country, but they still keep his passport. His case has been adjourned multiple times. We have lost our business and now may lose our home.
MP Andrew Griffiths took the issue to Parliament in Sept, but we need all the help we can to get him home to our hospital.

Please help me to campaign the government to get my husband out Kenya!

Daily Voice : Put An End to Namibian Seal Clubbing!

Put An End to Namibian Seal Clubbing!

Each year beginning July 1, a quota of 80,000 Cape fur seal pups are set to be beaten to death in Namibia. The pups are separated from their mothers. They are herded away from the safety of the sea, then beaten to death with pick handles. They are stabbed in the throat, often while still alive.

We can beat this cruelty.

A further quota of 6,000 adult bull seals will be set in Namibia. These are to be shot at point-blank range so that their genitals can be exported to the East, where they will be used to make ineffective sex potions for the Asian market. You can help put an end to this!

Take action today and urge the Minister of Fisheries in Namibia to end this cruel madness! This action is presented in collaboration with the new Pivot TV series The Operatives airing Sundays at 10 p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST.

Bowmanville Zoo In Canada: Stop Exploiting Lion & Tiger Cubs For Sport Stunts

Please sign and share this petition in an effort to get the Bowmanville Zoo of Canada to stop exploiting their animals like baby lions and tigers for the purpose of fan entertainment. Recently, several sports teams like the Toronto Blue Jays' worked with their local zoo for the purpose of "borrowing" some young animals as a ploy to "spice up" the pregame activities. This is such a cruel practice for the animals, despite how cute and cuddly they may appear. Do not put animals in such stressful situations for the purpose of entertainment and exploitation.
The Toronto Blue Jays are not the first sports team with the idea that a wild animal would add to the entertainment of fans during a pregame festivity. Another team in another country did the same thing with a live, majestic adult lion. However, animal advocates such as PETA would tell you clearly that it is poor practice for these animals.
The Toronto Blue Jays made an agreement with the Bowmanville zoo in Canada to bring two of their young animals, a tiger cub and lion cub to the playing field as an exhibit for the fans during the pregame activities. However, people such as PETA, who are the most concerned and educated about the care and well-being of these little guys believe such a practice is “inadvertently supporting cruelty and neglect” of the animals involved and demanded in a letter that team officials make the clubhouse an animal-free zone. PETA is known as the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and have the animals best interest at heart, saying that the use of these animals in such a stressful situation is an exploitative stunt that is cruel and dangerous for them.
The sports team and even the zoo personnel dismisses the concerns of PETA as "stupid stuff," saying that not everyone can be pleased or happy. In fact, a Mr. Buehrle stated that “I think this is pretty dumb that we bring these tigers, and people are sitting there saying animal abuse and all this other crap. You can’t please everybody. Some people think it’s cool, and some people just want to mouth off and say stupid stuff. It don’t bother me at all." It is sad that the actual care and impact of the animals is not taken into consideration when looking to promote entertainment for the fans. Surely most people love to view an animal, especially the young but you can bet that most of those fans would also disagree with this situation if they were aware of the stress and harm this causes those animals.
What is also disturbing is that the Bowmanville Zoo favors the views of the sports team while accusing such an organization as PETA as “animal apartheid." Those that are closest to the animals and how they are raised were disturbed, stating that “most” baby animals kept in private zoos are taken from their mothers soon after birth, housed in small cages and exploited for photo opportunities. Certainly zoos, the staff and handlers of the animals should understand their dynamics and upbringing so as to not put them into such stressful situations.
Although there has been some clashing between the zoo officials and PETA, all involved need to have the animals best interest at heart. You would think that the individuals running a zoo would share the same morals and views as those of PETA since they are sharing the same type of business; the care and well-being of animals. As spokesman for PETA stated, the goal is in “providing quality animal care and, by extension, caring for the planet, which is central to our philosophy.”
Let's encourage better support in this effort from the Bowmanville zoo; Please sign and share this petition in an effort to get the Bowmanville Zoo of Canada to stop exploiting their animals like baby lions and tigers for the purpose of fan entertainment. Recently, several sports teams like the Toronto Blue Jays' worked with their local zoo for the purpose of "borrowing" some young animals as a ploy to "spice up" the pregame activities. Tell Tyson Foods: Stop Feeding Antibiotics to Healthy Chickens!

New evidence from Reuters shows that Tyson Foods, a major poultry supplier, has been routinely feeding antibiotics to their chickens. This practice occurs continuously over the birds' lives, not just when they are sick. Tyson leads a pack of five major meat suppliers who support this practice: Pilgrim's Pride, Perdue Farms, George's, and Koch Foods.
This overzealous use of antibiotics is more than an animal rights issue. It promotes the growth of "superbugs" -- bacteria resistant to medicines used to treat humans and pets.
Tyson Foods is endangering human health for the sake of maximizing profits. Please sign the petition to urge Tyson Foods to stop the cruel, unnatural and dangerous practice of feeding antibiotics to healthy birds!
