Daily Voice : Take Slavery in Iraq to the International Criminal Court

Take Slavery in Iraq to the International Criminal Court

UN officials have reported that as many as 1,500 people fleeing religious persecution in Iraq have been captured and may be at risk of modern slavery.1

Khandhar Kaliph's daughter is one of them. "She said she is going to be sold as a slave [...] for $10. What can a father say to that? How can I help? We all feel so useless."2 Khandhar has been despairing over the safety of his child ever since.

In early August, tens of thousands of people belonging to a religious minority group rejected by the Islamic State (formerly known as ISIS) fled their homes in terror as militants took over their town.3

Hundreds of these women have reportedly now been kidnapped and are being held inside a police station in northern Iraq.4 Without immediate action, they and thousands more like them could be at risk of modern slavery.

One thing you can do right now is help secure justice for Khandhar's daughter and others like her. Call for the International Criminal Court to immediately investigate and try those suspected of enslaving Iraqis.

Stop The Exelon Company from Polluting and Destroying the Chesapeake Bay!

Please sign and share this petition in an effort to stop critical pollution issues within the Chesapeake Bay, especially around the Conowingo Dam that is escalating quickly. The Dam's Owner, Exelon Corporation recently applied for a permit that has been approved, which will increase sediment in the Bay at its high breaking point. Can you imagine the damage this pollution is doing to the environment and the lives within those waters!!!
Environmentalists have been working diligently for more than 30 years to clean up the Chesapeake Bay area. However, all their efforts will be tossed aside if the issues surrounding sediment and the Conowingo Dam is not addressed and resolved. As one spokesperson stated, "If we do nothing to dredge that sediment, the bay is doomed. The Conowingo Dam is a sediment trap. It’s been in existence for 85 years, and it’s never been dredged or maintained. If we do nothing to dredge that sediment, the bay is doomed.”
The sediments within the Bay contains phosphorus, nitrogen, and other harmful nutrients that can cloud waters, sprout toxic algae bacteria, harm ecosystems, kill aquatic life, and sully drinking water. The Dam was constructed to collect that pollution and largely preventing it from entering the Chesapeake Bay. Sediment has now reached the brim of the dam and if the Exelon Company is allowed to contribute by its renewal of its permit, just one big storm event could send it over the edge, blanketing and destroying the Bay.
This is a critical issue for the Chesapeake Bay. “This is the time for everybody who cares about the Chesapeake Bay to be focused on this re-licensing by the Exelon Company. This is a once-in-a-generation chance to make sure someone does something with the sediments that have been accumulated." The full story on this issue can be found at http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2014/08/08/3467685/chesapeake-bay-pollution-conowingo-dam/.
We need to stop Exelon from further destroying and polluting the Chesapeake Bay. Close Mink and Fox Fur Farms in Norway

For more than 10 years, the government coalition has been shown shocking photos of sick and injured animals and the conditions these animals are forced to live under- breaking Norwegian law, ignoring complaints and providing no promised improvement.

Evidence of "gruesome" conditions for animals at 24 fur farms around Norway, taken at fur farms from Troms in the north to Agder in the south, found minks with their hind legs bitten off, animals with huge sores on their heads and down their backs, animals with ears and tails that had been chewed off,- even a mother fox was found dead and rotting in her cage, while her pups struggled to survive in the same cage.

Horrific Fur Farm Footage from Animal Protection Norway and Network for Animal Freedom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xKbldQmMqM&feature=youtu.be

Support a controlled phase out of fur production in Norway.

Encourage Congress to Pass National Law that Bans Elephants From Circuses & the Abuse They Endure!

Please sign and share this petition nationwide in an effort to encourage laws on a national level that would ban the use of elephants and other animals in circuses. In doing so, the animals endure a great deal of abuse and cruelty when being trained to do what the handlers want them to and it is unfair to these creatures!!
Animal activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Animal Defenders International (ADI) have been working diligently around the world to put an end to the use of wild and exotic animals in traveling circuses. The "Greatest Show On Earth" just recently opened in the Frisco Bay Area and continues to open around the nation; around the world! With pictures of victim elephants in hand, protesters and activists state that "This is how they take the baby elephants and tie them up and beat them to do the tricks you're going to see. Just the way these animals are carted around from city to city all year round, living in parking lots, living i tiny pens and cages for their entire lives. They falsely portray it as a paradise when, in fact, it's a hell hole for these elephants."
Of course those running the circus and handling the animals deny all charges, saying they treat them like family! Really? Witnesses have seen otherwise. Activists are not only targeting circuses but many zoos as well who do not seem to know how to treat their animals with love and respect. Animal Defenders International (ADI) is a major international campaigning group, with offices in London, Los Angeles and Bogota, who lobby to protect animals on issues such as animals in entertainment and their use in experiment, among other animal issues worldwide. Another organization fighting for the protection of animals is Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act (TEAPA).
Members of Congress have also been working with these organizations and hope to pass a bill endorsed by Representative Jim Moran to protect the animals in circuses from abuse! President Creamer of the ADI states that “Magnificent wild animals have no place in a traveling circus, and with this bill, the US joins almost 30 countries across the world that have taken action to end the suffering. Due to the very nature of the traveling circus, wild animals cannot move around or exercise naturally, they live their whole lives chained or tied up, or in small cages that fit on the back of a truck.  Our investigations have also shown that violence to control animals is part of circus culture; animals are beaten, whipped and electric shocked to make them perform tricks. This brutality has no place in modern society.”
We have got to do our part to stop the brutality that animals endure in circuses and other facilities across the country. The mounting evidence of inhumane treatment and the growing public concern for these animals demands that we reconsider what are appropriate living conditions for these intelligent, social creatures.
Please sign and share this petition nationwide in an effort to encourage laws on a national level that would ban the use of elephants and other animals in circuses. In doing so, the animals endure a great deal of abuse and cruelty when being trained to do what the handlers want them to and it is unfair to these creatures!!

Daily Voice : End Child Marriage in Syrian Refugee Camps!

End Child Marriage in Syrian Refugee Camps!

Child marriage on the rise in Syrian refugee camps. And more girls than boys are victims of forced marriage. Girls are forced into marriage with older men, or are sexually assaulted and become pregnant. Child marriages must end in refugee camps in Jordan. Marriages must only be allowed for those 18 and older. Additionally, officials must address education for these children. Girls who aren't in school are more likely to marry when they are under 18 or when they get pregnant they cannot attend school. Maha, a 13-year-old, was forced to marry a 23-year-old at the age of 12 last year due to fear of sexual assault and financial concerns. "First of all, I didn't want to get married because I am too young, but my parents forced me to. Second of all, we heard about a lot of rape and kidnapping cases in Jordan. But no, not at all. I didn't want to get married. I am still young, and I wanted to finish my studies," says Maha. Maha is now pregnant. However, because of her age, her pregnancy is weak. She has not been to school since age 10. Ask Syrian and Jordanian officials to end child marriage and encourage education for its youth. A full quarter of Syrian refugee marriages involves a child under age 18. Syrian and Jordanian officials must more strictly enforce age requirements for marriage!

Daily Voice : Make College a Reality for All Women
« Reply #413 on: August 26, 2014, 01:02:42 PM »
Make College a Reality for All Women

It's well known that education is linked to future economic prosperity, but college tuition continues to skyrocket. Rising tuition costs mean women donâ??t have access to education that will allow them to live their dreams and fully participate in local economies and communities.

All womenâ??especially women of color and single mothersâ??deserve access to college.

The raw numbers suggest that more women graduate with college degrees than men every year, but college degrees are not equally accessible to all women. In 2010, 30% of white women had a college degree or higher, compared to 21.4% percent of black women and a mere 14.9% of Hispanic women. Only 15% of single mothers had a college degree.

This discrimination needs to end! Tell Congress to make college affordable and accessible for all women.

Depending on her race and marital status, a woman will not only face challenges completing a college degree, but her future income will reflect this education disparity.

While women overall make 77 cents for every dollar the average white male makes, black women and Hispanic women only make 70 cents and 61 cents, respectively. More than half of single mothers earn less than $30,000 a year, compared to their married coworkers, half of whom earn more than $50,000 a year.

Education is not a luxury: it is an economic imperative that every hard-working student should be able to afford.

Tell Congress to make college more affordable and help make financial stability a reality for all women!

Daily Voice : Tell Dubai to Stop Exhibiting Exotic Animals in Their Mall!

Tell Dubai to Stop Exhibiting Exotic Animals in Their Mall!

Dubai is home to the largest mall in the world, but to them this isn't a great enough distinction. To further draw attention, the mall is exhibiting large wild animals in concrete enclosures that prevent them from fulfilling their natural interests and behaving as they would in the wild.
The newest attraction is is a giant Pacific octopus -- the largest species of octopus on the planet -- that stretches to an impressive 14 feet. Another animal held captive in the mall is a 1,600 pound crocodile, one of the largest reptiles on the planet.
Unfortunately, the largest mall in the world still isn't large enough to hold some of the world's largest animals. No enclosure is. In the wild, crocodiles spend hours swimming and regulate their buoyancy and body temperature. This is impossible in a concrete imprisonment. The mall's decision to house wild animals may also support the exotic animal trade, which is largely unregulated and causes much animal suffering. Please sign the petition to urge the Dubai mall to stop exhibiting exotic animals!

Tell President Obama: It's Time to Fire CIA Director John Brennan

It's time for CIA Director John Brennan to go.

His actions in recent months are unacceptable. An Inspector General's report confirms what has already been reported in the mediaâ??the CIA spied on its Senate overseers and made false claims to the DOJ against Senate staffers investigating the agency's use of torture.

It's clear now that Mr. Brennan was either clueless about what was going on in his agency or he outright lied to the Senate about it. His belated, private apology and his referral of the matter to an internal CIA â??accountability boardâ? are not an adequate response.

Director Brennan lost Congressâ?? and the publicâ??s trust when the CIA illegally read the communications of Senate staffâ??not to mention violating the system of checks and balances at the heart of our democracy.

Take action today and tell President Obama that Director Brennan is no longer a reliable leader.
