Tell Medicare to Cover Continuous Glucose Monitors for People with Diabetes

Diabetes technologies have the potential to transform the care of people with diabetes.

The continuous glucose monitor (CGM) has been shown to improve glucose control — preventing dangerous high and low blood sugars — and is recommended by national diabetes clinical guidelines and covered by nearly all private health plans.

However, Medicare does not yet cover CGM devices, leaving seniors with insulin-dependent diabetes vulnerable to high rates of hospitalization and emergency room visits.

In addition, coverage of this important technology by Medicare will also help advance artificial pancreas systems, of which CGM is an important component.

Medicare needs to hear from YOU that access to CGMs is vitally important.

Sign today, and your name will be included in the petition that will be formally submitted to Medicare.

Brevard County Sheriff - Investigate Animal Shelter Found Involved in Animal Fights

Please sign and share this petition nationwide in an effort to get Brevard County Animal Services thoroughly investigated regarding allegations that they conduct fights in their shelters between dogs and cats. After they were audited in March by the Brevard County Clerk of the Circuit Court, it was determined that the facility tests how dogs and cats get along by tossing them together, often leading to fatal fights. Thank you for signing and sharing so that we can stop this practice!
In Titusville, Florida, the Brevard County Animal Services facility underwent a complete audit by the Brevard County Clerk of the Circuit Court and his findings reveal some disturbing news that is under investigation. The audit involved examination of data management, animal care, animal enforcement, financial management, workforce management, facilities, their mission and strategies.
They noted the facility utilized some non-standard euthanizing techniques and animal behavior tests. In order to determine if cats and dogs get along together before adoptions, it was noted that a dog would be thrown in with a cat. In one instance, after the "test," both animals had to be euthanized! The auditor stated that "the cat had to be euthanized from severe injuries, and , the dog was then euthanized on account of its own behavior. It made me mad, There's no reason to do that. A normal human being with any common sense would not do that." This is a common practice at this Animal Service facility. There are definitely more humane methods of determining what animals do well with others than to toss them in together to see if they can and will tear each other apart, leading to their ultimate demise in the end!
Of course, a spokesperson at the facility denies these allegations, stating they were a personal opinion of the auditor although documentation came from facts seen while at the facility. The audit was kept private for three months and after hearing nothing after that time, it was decided to make it available to the public. The Brevard County Animal Services is short staffed and making some poor choices in animal behavior and care prior to adoptions.

Charge Vet Worker & Hold Vet Office Accountable After Animal Abuse

Please sign and share this petition in an effort to get this veterinary clinic worker permanently fired and the veterinary office held accountable for the witnessed and taped animal abuse of an uncooperative dog in the facility. Their excuse was because the dog had aggressive tendencies; aggressive dogs normally are the result of fear! There are other more humane ways of caring for a fearful dog than to hang it from the neck and toss it against the wall!! Teach your staff proper ways to handle an aggressive animal that is only acting out of fear and anxiety.
Ms. Stefanie Stasse was filmed on a cell phone video while she was swinging a dog by its neck and repeatedly slamming it against the wall. Other staff members claim that the dog was treated in this manner was because of its past aggressive behaviors. This poor dog is obviously terrified and its only way to defend itself is through some aggressive behavior. Slamming the animal against the wall and hanging it certainly does not ease its fears; it harms the dog physically, mentally and emotionally. This is indeed animal abuse and cruelty.
The veterinary facility originally fired this worker after the incident but staff there are making excuses, basically saying that this dog deserved the treatment it endured because of its history with aggressive tendencies. There is no excuse for treating any animal in abusive manners because of its behavior. The dog is scared and reacts through defensive manners. A professional in the veterinary field should know other proper methods of handling a dog that is scared, fearful and reacting aggressively.
The owner of the veterinary hospital, Dr. Mohammad Hassan, initially backed his staff member, saying she was beating the animal “because it had become too aggressive.” However, he then fired Stasse and stated that “There was no damage whatsoever to the dog there," and claimed that the video was “obviously stolen” and manipulated to edit out parts where Stasse had handled the dog in a more gentle manner. That compensates for the abuse it endured? He additionally stated that other staff members were hurt by the scared animal. Either way, it does not give anyone the right to abuse it! Teach your staff how to humanely handle an animal rather than abuse it!

Celina Jaitly Files Police Complaint Over Sunder

If you wish to help, you can write to Maharashtra forest officials at:
The Honourable MK Rao Chief Conservator of Forests Office of the Chief Conservator of Forests (Territorial) Kolhapur Van Vardhan Building Opposite Principal Post Office Ambedkar Chowk, Tarabai Chowk Kolhapur 416 003 [email protected]
The Honourable Suresh A Thorat Additional Principal Chief Conservator Forests (Wildlife West) Borivali LT Road Near Old MHB Bus Stop, Forest Quarter Borivali (W) 400 091 Mumbai [email protected]
The Honourable Sarjan Bhagat, IFS Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Van Bhavan Ramgiri Road Civil Lines Nagpur 440 001 Maharashtra [email protected]
~
Celina Jaitly recently took to Twitter to urge her fans to help #FreeSunder – the captive elephant held in Kolhapur by Maharashtra Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Vinay Kore, and now the actor and ambassador for the United Nations Free & Equal campaign has gone a step further by rushing to the Colaba police station urging them to act against the abuse of Sunder after the 14-year-old elephant was found suffering from a massive wound on his leg. Senior Inspector Rameshwar Supley acknowledged the complaint from Jaitly. Meanwhile, a complaint against the abuse was also filed by Naresh Kadyan of People for Animals in Delhi after he learned about Sunder’s wound.

Meanwhile, a complaint against Sunder’s abuse was also filed by People for Animals’ Naresh Kadyan in Delhi after he learned about Sunder’s wound.
During a recent veterinary inspection by an elephant expert, Sunder was found with what the health examination report calls a “MASSIVE wound … as a result of constant tying with heavy chains”. The expert’s report also states that Sunder should be moved from Kolhapur to an elephant-care centre in Bangalore “on an emergency basis” as directed by the Bombay High Court. The court had ordered the Maharashtra Forest Department to move Sunder to the centre before the monsoon season. But Kore – who is not the legal owner of Sunder and has kept him on his property illegally – has attempted to block the order by filing an appeal with the Supreme Court. PETA has been campaigning for Sunder’s release since 2012 and is represented in the Supreme Court by leading animal advocate Raj Panjwani.
All the paperwork for Sunder’s transfer has been completed, and now the Maharashtra Forest Department simply needs to move Sunder. The health examination report also stated that Sunder’s wound can be dressed, as he is not in musth (a period of sexual urge in elephants that can make them difficult to handle), and he can and should be transported to Bangalore quickly.

Ban Fox and Coyote Penning in All 50 States

Grisly from start to finish, fox penning begins when the steel jaws of a leg hold trap snap shut on a coyote or fox, inflicting terrible pain. A trapper removes the animal from the trap and packs her into a cage with other injured animals, transports and sells the animal to pen operators. The animals are routinely sold and transported across state lines to operators of pens. The caged animals may be hauled hundreds of miles. With no food or water, some animals die on the trip.
Once bought by pen operators, the foxes and coyotes are placed inside fenced enclosures with no chance of escape. Dogs tear the captive animal apart, mauling it to death, and this provides amusement for participants who travel from state to state to wager on their dogs.
Today, these pens operate in 19 Southern and a few Midwestern states. Enclosures can range from 15 acres to more than 1,000 acres. North Carolina has about 110 of these arenas, South Carolina some 130, Georgia more than 60 and Virginia around 40.
Pitting one animal against another in bloody combat is cruel and unethical - and no different than dog fighting or cockfighting. We demand that this barbaric blood "sport" be illegal in all 50 states. Pass a Federal law and make penning a felony crime.

Tell Congress: Agree and Act on a National Strategic Agenda

Our leaders in Washington do plenty of fighting. But they havenâ??t done much fixing when it comes to Americaâ??s greatest national problems. They canâ??t even agree on which problems to solve.

Itâ??s up to you to demand action on a unifying National Strategic Agenda. No Labels brings a new politics of problem solving to government. We are hundreds of thousands of citizens from across the political spectrum who agree on four urgent, nonpartisan goals:

Create 25 million new jobs over the next 10 years
Secure Medicare and Social Security for another 75 years
Balance the federal budget by 2030
Make America energy secure by 2024

Nearly 100 members of Congress from both sides of the aisle have already endorsed the concept of a National Strategic Agenda. Tell the rest of Congress: Stop Fighting, Start Fixing!

Sign on to the No Labels National Strategic Agenda!

Clif Bar: Raise the Bar on Child Slavery!

Isn't it disappointing when a "socially responsible" company refuses to be transparent?

We at Food Empowerment Project have long enjoyed the products from Clif Bar & Company, including energy bars that contain chocolate. But when we asked Clif last year, "From which countries do you get cocoa beans?" they refused to tell us.

With some 1.8 million children in Ghana and the Ivory Coast toiling in the chocolate industry--where they may be exposed to the worst forms of child labor, including hazardous work and slavery--we as consumers have the right to know.

Many chocolate companies -- including Newman's Own -- disclosed to us where their cocoa beans come from, so what does Clif Bar have to hide? We are not asking for full supply chain information or grower names -- simply the cocoa beans' country of origin.

Plantations in Ghana and the Ivory Coast together supply 70 percent of the world's cocoa. For years, these farms have used child slaves, who work 12 hours a day. They cut cocoa pods from trees with heavy machetes, slice the pods open, scoop out the beans, and put them in the sun to dry. Then they stuff the beans into bags and load them onto trucks bound for the United States and Europe. Children are not paid, they are cut off from their families, and when they don't work fast enough, they are beaten.

Clif Bar acknowledges on their website "that food matters to our families, our communities, and our planet -- as our food choices affect the physical, social, and environmental fabric of our lives." They even pledge a commitment to communities worldwide. Yet this now all seems to be empty rhetoric.

Recently, Clif Bar announced that they intend to use the Rainforest Alliance certification, a system that imposes the least amount of requirements on the companies that plan to use its seal and does not guarantee the cocoa is free of child labor or slavery. While we appreciate Clif Bar's effort, our question remains the same: Where do you source your cocoa from?

How could a company that prides itself on social responsibility choose to not be transparent about an issue as important as child slavery?

Please join us in asking them.

Demand justice for sheep exposed to abuse in the US and Australian wool industries

Entrenched cruelty in the Australian and US wool industries has been exposed in a PETA video, which shows sheep being brutally punched and stamped on.
Fourteen sheds in Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska in the US, and 19 sheds in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia were uncovered as sites of abuse.
The RSPCA in Australia has launched an investigation into the footage, which documents a total of 70 staff abusing sheep, with acts that included beating sheep with a hammer and another having a deep cut crudely sewn up.
The abuse occurred in spite of the sheep putting up no resistance to being sheared for their wool, and investigators did not record any vet care for the abused animals.
The Minister for Agriculture in Australia, Barnaby Joyce, questioned the footage. However, Mr Joyce is a keen supporter of introducing ‘ag-gag’ laws into Australia, which enable the abuse of animals by protecting abusers from being exposed.
Sheep deserve to be treated with respect and offenders need to be brought to justice. Please sign and share the petition to demand justice for sheep exposed to abuse in the US and Australian wool industries.
