Daily Voice : Nestlé: Stop Stealing Water From Poor Communities!

Nestlé: Stop Stealing Water From Poor Communities!

California is in the third year of what may be the worst drought in 400 years, and its citizens are being fined for wasting water on their own lawns. Meanwhile, Nestlé, which owns a bottling plant on the reservation of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, is pulling undisclosed amounts of water from the ground -- and they're doing it legally.
Nestlé is exempt from local water agencies, so they don't need to reveal how much water they're taking. But the water agency estimates that they're taking an average of 244 million gallons of water a year. This water is purified and sold as bottled water under the Nestlé Pure Life label.
With the scarcity of water as it is, Nestlé should show more compassion for poor communities. They are significantly contributing to the area's water shortage. The water they pumped last year alone would have been enough to supply 400 homes. Clean water should be a basic right, not a priviledge afforded to the wealthy! Please sign the petition to urge Nestlé to stop stealing water from California's poorest communities!

Fire Employees in Houston â??Area Pound Who Euthanized Dogs Prematurely

Please sign and share this petition worldwide to demand that the employees at the Fort Bend County Animal Shelter be fired for euthanizing a couple of dogs prematurely without warrant. They call it a “mistake!!” Quite the mistake, to take the animal’s lives within hours after they were brought into the shelter.
When dogs are brought in to a shelter, even one that cannot keep them for long periods without being adopted, by law they were supposed to keep them for at least three working days. Both a French bulldog and American pitbull were brought into the shelter and checked for tags or a microchip. They had neither. A volunteer was present when they arrived at the facility but protocol was not followed when handling the animals. Those responsible should and will be disciplined; not just disciplined. They should be fired for taking these lives!
How can people take these lives so lightly; bring them into the shelter and off to be euthanized? I don’t get it. It is bad enough that these are kill shelters but the animals were not even kept for hours, much less days.

Daily Voice : Give Manatees a Real Sanctuary

Give Manatees a Real Sanctuary

Their skin may look thick, but, like us, manatees can't handle cold water for very long. In fact, some years hundreds of endangered manatees die from prolonged exposure. That's why we must protect their winter homes -- places like Three Sisters Springs in Kings Bay, Florida -- as true sanctuaries, instead of tourist traps. Increasingly, when the manatees have arrived at the springs, they've been greeted by an absurd number of people in the water wanting to have a close encounter. Manatees are gentle, yes, and peaceable too. But when they congregate near springs during winter months, they do so not for our own benefit but as a matter of survival. What they really need is to be left alone.   The Center for Biological Diversity is partnering with Save the Manatee Club to ask the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to make Three Sisters Springs a permanent winter sanctuary and to implement a no-touch policy.Take action below -- sign our petition to protect manatees' winter refuge.

Daily Voice : Let Carol the Circus Elephant Retire in Peace!

Let Carol the Circus Elephant Retire in Peace!

Performing elephant Carol was targeted and injured by a still-unknown assailant in a 2013 drive-by shooting. Carol thankfully made a full recovery, but rather than retire her to a safe life in an animal sanctuary, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus made her perform on April 3, 2014.
Carol's shooter was never caught and likely still at large. Forcing the elephant to perform after such a tragedy leaves her vulnerable to repeat shooting attempts. After suffering from her bullet wound, Carol should be spared from performing and allowed to live the rest of her days in peace.
Please sign the petition to urge Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus to let Carol the elephant retire in a sanctuary!

Suspend Ray Rice for the 2014 NFL Season

Ray Rice was only suspended 2 games for beating his wife unconscious and then dragging her to a hotel in Atlantic City. We as fans cannot allow this crime to go unpunished. Rice was allowed to enter a pre-trail diverson program and wasn't forced to account for his actions criminally either.
Demand the NFL suspend Ray Rice for the rest of 2014 football season!

Daily Voice : Ask for an Investigation into Trinidad Oil Spills

Ask for an Investigation into Trinidad Oil Spills

In a sadly far from unique scenario, the island country of Trinidad and Tobago has been suffering a series of massive oil spills.
Last winter, on the 17th of December, officials found a massive spill on Trinidad. The oil was covering beaches and the fragile mangrove habitats. Several more were found after that, and at the beginning of February this year, fishermen reported yet another.
The state-owned company controlling the oil industry in Trinidad, Petrokin, is behind all these disasters. It tried to pass the blame onto mysterious, unknown saboteurs for two of the spills, but still received a $3.1 million fine.
Fines, however, are not enough, especially given how profitable the oil industry is. These spills are destroying Trinidad’s aquatic ecosystems and wildlife, and ultimately the fishing and tourist industries. One would be unacceptable, but so many in such a short space of time is ridiculous.
Ask the authorities to launch an independent investigation into the oil spills as a matter of urgency.

Save koala habitat in Maryborough, Qld., Australia

A greedy multi-millionaire developer owns a tract of land in Tinana, Maryborough, which has always been a koala habitat.  Now he has started to bulldoze the land and its trees because he wants to develop it, i.e. to build houses on it.  The developer has halted the bulldozing temporarily because of public protests.  Its worth is $400,000, but no one seems able to afford it or want it as a koala habitat.  The Council should buy the land, and would have plenty of money but too often wastes it on other things which are not needed.
Tell the Fraser Coast Council and State Government to preserve the koala habitat in Tinana, Maryborough!

Daily Voice : Stop the journey of death for millions
« Reply #391 on: August 04, 2014, 07:05:37 AM »
Stop the journey of death for millions

I watched dumbstruck at the cruelty. Where these things human? Who could do this to an animal? I wanted to turn away, but I had to watch to confirm the truth. Animals being slaughtered and butchered in front of their fellow doomed creatures. Men beating and torturing animals as they cried out in pain. My heart was torn in two as I watched a trembling black steer, corralled, watching and waiting in terror, for his turn to be butchered?
It has been described as Australia’s biggest shame, a black mark on her otherwise good animal rights record. In a country famous for its outback cattle drives, there is one drive that needs to stop: the live export of animals for slaughter.
You think flying economy class is uncomfortable. Imagine sharing your seat with three others for 35 days. On a flight constantly bombarded my strong winds and turbulence. Imagine that you are not allowed to go to the bathroom; you are forced to lie in your own faeces and urine, as well as the passengers lying on top, or besides you. There is no air-conditioning and the smell of death permeates through the cabin as some passengers die on the way. Would you ever dream of flying in these conditions? Would you ever dream of allowing a family member, a friend, or your pet to travel in these conditions? This is the reality for millions of cattle every year as Australia exports over 3 million live animals for slaughter each year - mainly cattle, sheep and goats - to markets in the Middle East and Asia. Reality check: you are allowing this to happen to thousands of cattle every year, if you do not act now.
After a disturbing expose on the cruelty suffered by Australian cattle on, and after this horrific journey there was huge public outcry that resonated across the world. A few stop-gap measures were put into place, which included the Gillard government temporarily suspending the live export of cattle to Indonesia. Yet nothing really was done that would make a major impact on lessoning the extreme pain, terror and misery suffered by these animal. If fact, instead of acting to save these cattle, Federal Nationals leader Warren Truss has nominated strengthening Australian livestock exports - not just the cattle trade to Indonesia - as a leading priority for the newly elected Coalition government. This while animals still endure cruel death, including being beaten, dragged, thrown, inverted in medieval slaughter boxes banned here in Australia, having their tails broken, their eyes gouged and stabbed, and their leg tendons slashed to disable them, before having their throats cut while fully conscious.
It is barbaric, it is cruel, and it needs to stop now. There is no reason why chilled or frozen meat rather than live animals be exported. We all saw the footage, we all called for action yet nothing has been done. We will not lie down Tony Abbott, we will not forget.
Sign now and make a difference to millions of animals.
