Daily Voice : Help End Modern Slavery in the Thai Fishing Industry

Help End Modern Slavery in the Thai Fishing Industry

A six-month investigation by The Guardian has found that the Thai fishing industry is "built on slavery", with trafficked workers enduring 20-hour shifts, regular beatings, torture and execution-style killings. Some are even driven to suicide, all to support the flow of cheap farmed prawns and shrimp sold around the world.[1]

And the revelations don't end there. Three big global retailers -- Walmart, Carrefour and Costco -- are all named as customers of a seafood supplier in Thailand with proven links to slavery. Which means that prawns and shrimp whose production relies upon slave labour might well end up in your shopping basket.

Call on the big three retailers to help eliminate modern slavery in the Thai fishing industry by:

- Joining Thailand-based initiative Project Issara, co-ordinated by Anti-Slavery International, designed to eliminate modern slavery from the Thai seafood industry;

- Enforcing their zero tolerance policies on forced labour by independently inspecting their Thai supply chain for modern slavery and publishing their findings.

Encouragingly, Tesco has already agreed to take these necessary and practical steps, following the revelations in The Guardian. By sending a strong message to the three remaining major retailers, we can help ensure that the 300,000 people working in Thailand's fishing industry are treated as human beings, not slaves.

Investigate and Charge Officer Who Shot Dog for No Reason

Please sign and share this petition in an effort to demand a thorough investigation and charges against a police officer who shot a dog in a van for no apparent reason. He claims that the "Pitbull" charged at him so he fired. However, this regrettable tragedy was against a black Lab named Arfee who was mistaken by the officer as a pit bull! There are too many unanswered questions and needs to be fully investigated with the officer held accountable so as to gain justice for Arfee and his owner.
An Idaho police officer shot a black Labrador named Arfee who was in a van at the time. Arfee was sitting in the driver's seat of the van when the officer approached; mistook the dog for a Pitbull and fired. Craig Jones was visiting the lakeside town with his pal, 2-year old Arfee.
The officer approached the white van that appeared to be suspicious when looking for a child abductor inside. Instead, Arfee was barking from the front seat, spooking the officer who assumed it was a Pitbull and fired. When the owner, Mr. Jones, returned to his van, after eating at a nearby restaurant, he found Arfee missing, his windshield shot out and a note saying "Please contact city police watch commander regarding your dog."
The police department will not release the name of the officer who killed this precious pet for no apparent reason. He was taken off the streets and put on desk duty until the investigation is complete. There has been criticism from the area due to this tragedy and the restaurant owner in peril since he called police with a description of Mr. Jones van, even though he did nothing wrong. However, his pet paid the price.
This officer handled many more demanding situations; murders, bombings and more but he could not be more diligent and safe involving a dog that was safely inside its own van, guarding his domain while waiting for the return of his owner. The officer was in no danger in such a situation; the dog could not get out. But because he thought it was a barking, growling Pitbull, he shot and killed the dog!
There does not seem to be any viable reason for shooting this dog! Subsequently, the officer should be held accountable for his actions with at least some lost work time and pay! We Demand Answers About Westminster Sex Abuse

In the early 1980s, one of Margaret Thatcher's senior ministers was accused of sexually abusing young boys. But instead of taking immediate action to have the minister in question sacked and put in jail, Thatcher allegedly covered up the mounting suspicions, instead telling him to "clean up his sexual act." The people of Britain deserve to know the truth. It's disgusting enough that the minister in question supposedly used to pay boys under the age of consent to "entertain" him and his colleagues. But if the government really did engage in a conspiracy to try to protect an abuser from the consequences of his crime, how many other similar offenses have been hidden? And how many children and adolescents have been suffering in silence since their assaults?David Cameron has stepped to launch a full-scale look into the historical allegations. The British people -- including the survivors of this paedophilia -- deserve transparency and justice in this disturbing case of government corruption. Tell David Cameron to publicly release the results of the Westminster sex abuse scandal investigation and punish all those involved!

Congress: Pass Expanded Background Checks

In the aftermath of mass shootings in Tucson, Aurora, Sandy Hook, and Isla Vista, Congress has done the unthinkable... nothing at all.

There is a gaping hole in our laws that allow criminals and others to go to "private sellers" at gun shows, on the internet, and elsewhere to buy guns with no background check, no questions asked.

Not surprisingly, 80 percent of criminal inmates in a Department of Justice survey said they got their guns through private means -- no background check necessary.

More than 90% of Americans say that they support fixing the criminal background check system for gun sales by
1) getting the names of everyone who isn't allowed to buy a gun into the background check system, and
2) providing a background check for every gun purchase, with limited exceptions.

Join Gabby Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly and sign their petition calling on Congress to enact expanded background checks for gun purchases.

Tell Congress: Don't Allow Overfishing!

Weâ??ve made incredible progress in reversing overfishing. This has been good for both the environment and jobs in fishing. Through smart fishery legislation, weâ??ve been able to bring back fish whose populations were crashing due to years of overfishing.

But all our progress is about to be destroyed! In the House of Representatives, Rep. Hastings (R-WA) is trying to pass legislation that would create a new law allowing overfishing and eliminate deadlines to rebuild fish populations.

Please take action today and tell your Congressional Representative to say NO to Rep. Hastings legislation when it comes to the floor for voting.

Healthy fish populations are essential to ocean ecosystems and to the local economies that depend on them. Together, we can truly make a difference.

Personalized letters help make an even bigger impact. Please take one extra minute to include in your letter why the ocean matters to you or why this issue is important to you in your daily life.

Protect Ocean Life from 1 Trillion Pieces of Plastic

A new report published in the scientific journal Earth's Future, found that as Arctic ice melt accelerates due to climate change, more than one trillion pieces of plastic could be released into the ocean over the next decade—posing serious threats to sea life.

This is just one of the many deadly consequences of global warming. And currently, America has NO NATIONAL LIMITS on greenhouse gas pollution from power plants. But the EPA has proposed a rule that will begin to turn the tide—and our opponents are already attacking this common-sense solution with all their might, and a whole lot of money.

Fight back. Take action today, and stand in support of strong standards on carbon pollution from America's power plants.

Stop the Cruelty of Fox and Coyote Penning

Fox Penning is a cruel blood-sport that is legal in North Carolina, along with 19 other states.  Foxes and coyotes suffer everyday especially during hunting season from repeated acts of cruelty which involve them being trapped, captured, and then put into pens where hunting dogs are used to fight and maul them to death.
Foxes are captured and traded across state lines to be thrown into a pen with no way to escape while they are chased, hunted down, and ripped apart by hounds.
We ask North Carolina to ban this barbarically cruel blood-sport.

Daily Voice : Stop UK from Using Animals in Research!

Stop UK from Using Animals in Research!

Please sign and share this petition worldwide in an effort to get the United Kingdom to stop using animals in their research efforts. As we continue to stop such experimentation with animals, the genetic research is still on an upswing and must stop! Please help in stopping these practices!
It has been noted that, despite all recent efforts to stop the use of animals in experiments and research, the number of incidents is on the increase. The experiments using animals has grown by 0.3 percent over previous years. Just the King's College of London alone is a university that uses animals in their research for Parkinson's disease, cancer and dementia. They are not alone since Edinburgh and Oxford, among others that are leading in the number of animals used and killed.
Animal welfare groups and the coalition against such acts states that "There are enormous efforts going on to not using animals where it's unnecessary for them to be used. Where these animals are being used, then there's a necessity for that use. There's a lot of effort going into replacement." "While many types of research have declined or even ended, the advent of modern scientific techniques has opened up new research areas, with genetically modified animals, mainly mice, often being required to support those areas".
Under the law scientists are required to consider the 3Rs: to replace the use of animals; reduce the number need; or refine procedures to cause less suffering. Universities like the King's College has said that modified animals were needed for modeling the early stages of complex diseases such as cancer, Parkinson's disease and dementia, more accurately than before, despite their violations of the law.
The government has now failed for a third year on its 2010 post-election pledge to work to reduce the number of animals used in research and, as a result, millions of animals continue to suffer and die in our laboratories. Stop the use of animals in research and experimentation! Please sign and share this petition worldwide in an effort to get the United Kingdom to stop using animals in their research efforts. As we continue to stop such experimentation with animals, the genetic research is still on an upswing and must stop! Please help in stopping these practices!
