Daily Voice : Provide Water to Tigers on Reserves in India

Provide Water to Tigers on Reserves in India

Karnataka, India, is engaged in controversy on whether or not to artificially replenishing waterholes in tiger reserves in the dry summer months. Some conservationists argue that allowing some to die without water is "conservation" as it elimatates the old and the weak and ensures that only the best genes remain in circulation.

While survival of the fittest holds some truth, another truth is overlooked- that the fittest and strongest of the tigers will, indeed, find their own water- even if that means traveling off the reserves to find it- putting the strongest at risk of human conflict with villages and poaching.

In Karnataka, India, there are 5 tiger reserves which hold about 15% of the tiger population in India, about 300. All of India holds about 40% of the world's critically endangered wild tiger population.

We ask that the state forest department continue to supply water to tigers on reserves. This will protect the strongest of the tigers from conflicts with humans that may wander off reserves in search of water and put them at risk of being needlessly killed.

Allow Green Groups to Participate in Alberta Tar Sands Hearings

Several regulatory hearings are scheduled in Alberta about controversial new oil developments regarding the tar sands.  However, green groups have been barred from participating, with the reason given that they are not directly affected.

Barring green groups from participating in these hearings would be leaving out importance science regarding potential damage to the environment.  If green groups are not included in the hearings, than the oil companies have an advantage in seeking development that could seriously harm our environment.

Tell the Alberta Government to allow green groups to participate in tar sands hearings, so that all sides are fairly represented!

Request that Georgia University Close Dental Program Using Dogs that are later euthanized

Please sign and share this petition to demand this Georgia University not use dogs in their dental experiments and learning, pulling out their teeth and later euthanizing the animals when they no longer need them.

This University needs to shut down this dental program in Augusta, Georgia that uses dogs to test human dental implants.  Once they no longer need the dogs for their tests and experiments, they euthanize them.  The Chairman of the Department of Periodontics, Dr. Christopher Cutler at the University defends the program, stating that the use of dogs to test human implants "a pioneering approach to solving a serious medical issue." “The program uses dogs because the types of diseases and bone loss the dogs experience are similar to what humans typically experience,” Dr. Cutler said.

News of the dental implant prompted accusations of animal cruelty and a small protest.   According to investigations by the Humane Society, the dogs were used to pull teeth and replace with implants. The dogs were euthanized afterward and researchers took jaw bone samples from them.

"I think everyone would like to get completely away from animal research, but it is so important to medical research," Dr. Cutler from the Georgia University said. "Every major breakthrough in terms of medical devices, in terms of cancer drugs, has first been tested in animals because of the complexity of the biological systems."

With this dental program, it is appalling that they use the dogs for implant testing and then kill the animals because they don’t need them any longer. Please sign and share this petition to demand this Georgia University not use dogs in their dental experiments and learning, pulling out their teeth and later euthanizing the animals when they no longer need them.

Daily Voice : Illinois- Make Lion Meat Illegal
« Reply #315 on: May 16, 2014, 01:01:31 AM »
Illinois- Make Lion Meat Illegal

Illinois Representative Luis Arroyo has introduced a bill (HB 2991), the Lion Meat Act, that would make it unlawful for any person to slaughter a lion or for any person to possess, breed, import or export from Illinois, buy, or sell lions for the purpose of slaughter. The bill provides that it is unlawful to commercialize lion meat.

The African lion is listed as threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and is endangered in certain West African countries. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering protecting African lions under the Endangered Species Act, primarily to stop the trade in hunting trophies and lion skins that would prevent the sale of lion meat- but that hasnt happened yet, and there is no telling when it may happen (if it does at all).

In the meantime, the endangered animal is being raised on United States farms for slaughter, and tuning up on menus throughout the country.

We ask that Illinois Agriculture & Conservation Committee Members support the Lion Meat Act, (HB 2991), and make further slaughter for human consumption illegal, as the African Lion is facing extinction.

Daily Voice : Ban Trapping in Mexican Wolf Recovery Range
« Reply #316 on: May 17, 2014, 01:00:29 AM »
Ban Trapping in Mexican Wolf Recovery Range

Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area stretches across east-central Arizona and west-central New Mexico. This area includes the Apache National Forest and the Gila National Forest, and accounts for more than 6800 square miles of territory.

Wolf trapping on federal land hinders wolf restoration and the harm caused to wolves by traps violates the Endangered Species Act. Since 2002, traps have injured or killed 14 Mexican grey wolves. Two had entire limbs amputated, one endured a partial foot amutation and dozens have simply vanished.

Wolves harmed or killed by traps and snares have their chance of survival greatly reduced. They sustain tissue damage and other injuries that reduce their fitness to care for and feed their pups. In addition to the physcial damage, wolves endure psychological trauma, dehydration, and exposure.

With fewer than 60 Mexican wolves in the bi-state recovery area, wolf trapping is very poor management. Ban trapping of the Mecican grey wolf in the Blue Range Recovery Area.

Daily Voice : Save the Malayan Sun Bear from Extinction

Save the Malayan Sun Bear from Extinction

The Malayan sun bear is the smallest bear in the world- about 4 feet tall when standing on its hind legs. Also known as the honey bear, it is primarily found in tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia and on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo in Indonesia.

So much is known about the destruction of the rainforsests in Indonesia being replaced by palm oil plantations- and the animals being driven to extinction- such as the Sumatran tiger, orangutan, elephant and rhino; but less in known about the sun bear, and it was listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as "data defiecient" until 2007.

In addition to leveling the Sumatra forest, logging roads create convenient access for poachers. As natural food sources disappear, sun bears are driven by hunger to forage for food on  plantations, where they are shot or trapped by angry farmers. Often. sun bears are kept as pets. The mother bears are killed in order to obtain cubs young enough to tame.

The demand for bear products used in Traditional Asian Medicine is another threat as it prescribes bear fat, gall, meat, paws, spinal cord, blood, and bones for complaints ranging from baldness to rheumatism. Bear entrees are popular in restaurants, and sun bear paws are favored in Taiwan for soup.

With the habitat of the sun bear replaced with palm oil plantations, there should be no question as to whether the sun bear, (Helarctos malayanus), is endangered. Please list it as so immediately as it faces the same extinction possibilities as other Sumatran animals that once called the rainforest their home.

Daily Voice : Tell Fashion Designers to Stop Using Wolf Fur
« Reply #318 on: May 19, 2014, 01:00:25 AM »
Tell Fashion Designers to Stop Using Wolf Fur

The lastest trend, wearing wolf fur? The fur industry makes it sound like wolf trapping is the most natural thing occuring on the planet- never bothering to use words like "slaughter", "cruelty" or "torture".

SOURCE: http://www.furinsider.com/the-big-bad-wolf-things-that-make-people-go-hmm/

They do not mention the pain and terror an animal experinces when trapped- or that they will attempt to bite off their own limb to escape. They do not tell you that trappers unintentionally kill literally millions of non-target animals every year- including rare and endangered species, birds and pets.

The wolf slaughter is based on dangerous prejudices- not sound science. The false believe that the world will be a safer place for children with dead wolves is the stuff fairy tales are made of as wolves are critical to our heathy ecosystems. It's just another scheme to make a profit off the unnessary suffering of animals and to keep the fur industry alive.

Tell Christain Dior to stop supporting this cruelty and torture of fur in their collection and not to include wolf fur. Slaughter shouldn't be "fashionable". The company can do quite well without torturing animals.

Daily Voice : Help Prevent Dorset Badger Cull
« Reply #319 on: May 20, 2014, 01:00:26 AM »
Help Prevent Dorset Badger Cull

Despite the badger culls in Gloucestershire and Somerset being complete failures, it looks like there may be another one, this time in Dorset.

The previous culls failed to meet their targets, meaning that they won’t have even reduced the spread of bovine tuberculosis, which was their intended purpose. In other words, hundreds of badgers have been killed for nothing. The culls also cost the tax payer millions of pounds

Badger culls are not an efficient way to control the disease anyway. In the best case scenario, they slightly reduce levels of bovine TB. In the worst case, which is what happened, they actually make it worse. Stressed, frightened badgers flee, taking any diseases with them.

There are alternatives to sacrificing Britain’s wildlife, and they are much cheaper.

Tell DEFRA that we already know that badger culls are useless and the last thing the country needs is another one.
