Tell the FDA to Reverse the Ban on a Vitamin You Can't Live Without

You canâ??t live without folate, a B vitamin. Now the FDA plans to ban it in supplements so drug companies can have exclusive use of it.

Under new rules, the word "folate" will be banned from â??supplement factâ? labels; only "folic acid" will be allowed. Folate is the natural form of the vitamin, while folic acid is syntheticâ??and up to 40% of the population may have difficulty processing folic acid efficiently. Banning folate from the label is a sneaky way of banning it in the bottle.

All of us need folate, but it is especially important to prevent birth defects. Given folateâ??s popularity, drug companies have been dreaming of the billions theyâ??d make by turning it into an expensive patented drugâ??now FDA is trying to hand it to them on a silver platter.

Donâ??t let FDA ban an essential vitamin for drug company profitsâ??please act now!

Demand China stop killing whale sharks for lipstick!

Please sign and share this petition worldwide in an effort to get China to stop killing whale sharks just for the purpose of attaining fish oil supplements and making lipstick!

The endangered whale shark is one of the largest species of fish; yet it is rather docile and don’t post much danger to humans. Like the peaceful, slow-moving whale that they are, they feed primarily on plankton and are known even to sometimes let humans hop on their back for a ride. They deserve to live their serene lives in the oceans as they are meant.

A wildlife organization recently discovered, through a three-year investigation into the operation that the endangered fish are being processed at a Zhejiang, China plant called “China Wenzhou Yueqing Marine Organisms Health Protection Foods Co Ltd” in order to make cosmetics, like lipstick. Fishermen are paid $30,000 per shark for the purpose of making the lipstick and other products.

Aside from drying out the fins to attract customers and utilizing their skin for leather products, the oil in the whale shark’s liver is made into skin care products and Omega-3 supplements. Additionally, the supplements are actually sold internationally, in direct violation of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. China’s laws are much too lenient compared to other parts of the country but they need to step up and stop this practice of killing this docile animal. Read entire story on this horrible practice at http://www.ryot.org/video-rare-whale-sharks-reportedly-killed-used-make-lipstick-chinese-factory/632005

Daily Voice : Protect Marine Animals from Seismic Air Gun Blasting

Protect Marine Animals from Seismic Air Gun Blasting

The Atlantic Ocean is home to a vast and largely undocumented variety of marine mammals, including the extremely endangered North Atlantic right whale â?? less than 500 of which exist in this world. These are marine mammals that completely depend on their sense of hearing to find food, mates and migration routes. Now, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is allowing seismic air gun blasting that could seriously impair and even kill these magnificent marine animals.

Several oil and gas companies are lined up with proposals to blast deep into the ocean floor looking for oil and gas deposits, a first step in dirty, risky offshore drilling. These companies plan to simultaneously comb hundreds of acres of ocean, their long arrays of seismic air guns blasting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for weeks and months on end. In fact, Atlantic seismic air gun blasting, by the Federal governmentâ??s own estimates, will injure and kill more than 138,000 marine mammals.

These drilling activities are not only known to kill, injure and maim, but they present tremendous risks to our sensitive coastal environment and our economy. Doubly disastrous is the fact that these pursuits of dirty fossil fuels occur in areas most impacted by climate change. We must protect our precious marine animals and our vulnerable climate.

Tell the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to halt Atlantic seismic airgun blasting now!

Help save the Powerful Owl from extinction

Help save the Powerful Owl from extinction

The Powerful Owl is the largest owl in Australia. But due to loss of habitat, the biggest owl in Australia is dying out across the country. The Powerful Owl is listed as Vulnerable in Queensland, Threatened in Victoria, Endangered in South Australia and Vulnerable in New South Wales (NSW).

The Powerful Owl requires large tracts of forest or woodland habitat, leaving it adversely affected by habitat fragmentation. It prefers forest or woodland blocks of more than 200 hectares and avoids small patches and strips.

The main threat to the Powerful Owl is the clearing of habitat, especially the loss of old-growth hollow-bearing trees. The Powerful Owl requires hollows for nesting and many of its prey species are also hollow-dependent.

Over 50% of forest and woodland in NSW alone has been cleared and the process is continuing. In addition, prime habitat for the Powerful Owl has been targeted for agricultural clearing, logging, conversion to pine plantations and urbanisation.

The number of mature individuals has been estimated at 7,000 nationally - with over half occurring in NSW. In NSW alone, only 2000 breeding pairs are estimated to remain.

The remaining habitat of the Powerful Owl needs to be protected in order to save this bird of prey from slipping into extinction. Please sign the petition and demand the government of Australia takes action to save the Powerful Owl.

STOP SCOTTS' GMO GRASS IN ITS TRACKS NOW

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company has created genetically modified Roundup Ready Kentucky Bluegrass and announced that it will conduct field trials at the homes of Scotts' employees. There is no US government regulation of GMO grass. GMO Kentucky Bluegrass will increase the usage of the herbicide Roundup in residential, recreational & commercial business settings. There is increasing scientific evidence of the health harms caused by Roundup. Independent peer reviewed studies have found that it is inflammatory, genotoxic, neurotoxic, carcinogenic, an endocrine disruptor and is linked to male infertility. In addition, in 2010, Monsanto patented glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, as an antibiotic. Roundup is also a known chelator that binds to and draws out important nutrients. Scotts' claim that Roundup is benign is false.

GMO Roundup Ready grass will result in a further increase in the use of Roundup, which will contaminate our groundwater and drinking water. Imagine your children & pets frolicking around in a sea of herbicidal poison. Because of inevitable contamination, the grass is likely to be eaten by grass grazing animals. There has been no toxicity testing and the potential harm to animals eating this GMO grass is unknown. Will we be saying good-bye to pasture raised meat? Lastly, it is a scientific fact that weeds will evolve to develop resistance to Roundup, leading to ever increasing amounts being applied.

Scotts is Monsanto's exclusive agent for the marketing and distribution of consumer Roundup. The only true benefit of GMO grass is to increase Scotts' sales of Roundup, padding Scotts' & Monsanto's bottom lines at the expense of your health and the environment. We are calling for the BOYCOTT of all Scotts Miracle-Gro products until Scotts eradicates GMO Roundup Ready grass.

Over 200 Peer Reviewed Studies have found health or environmental concerns related to Glyphosate, the "active ingredient" in Roundup:

Daily Voice : Don't Let Climate Change Endanger the Pygmy Rabbit

Don't Let Climate Change Endanger the Pygmy Rabbit

Pygmy rabbits are as adorable as they are diminutive - they weigh less than one pound! But their small size doesn't help them as their habitat shrinks.

Warmer temperatures as well as more intense and frequent wildfires are reducing their sagebrush habitat and may drive this species to higher elevations. At the same time, lower levels of snowfall and a reduced snowpack threaten their strategy for escaping dangerous predators -- by burrowing through the snow -- and leaves them exposed, without cover.

In order to save this runt-like rabbit, we need to combat climate change immediately.

The EPA has proposed a landmark standard for climate pollution from new power plants. This standard will help end dirty energy as we know it and keep animals like the pygmy rabbit safe from climate change.

We know that industry leaders and their friends in Congress will be attacking it at any moment -- and we need our voices to rise up louder than theirs. Tell the EPA you support its proposal to help curb climate pollution and save the pygmy rabbits' habitat!

Urge Australia's Premiers to stand up to Coca-Cola's bullying tactics.

Coke's opposition to a container deposit scheme allows this littering to continue while they claim to care for the environment. They are running a smear campaign to try and defeat a common-sense recycling scheme in Australia. Not just that, but taking federal governments who have implemented this scheme to court. COCA-Cola Amatil has won the right to dismantle a Northern Territory recycling scheme.

The idea behind "Cash for Containers" is simple: buy a beverage, return the container, and get 10 cents refund. It's worked in South Australia for decades, where recycling rates are the highest in the country. But Coke is working around the clock to defeat the scheme.

Why have Coca-Cola resorted to bullying the good guys? For that ten cents! They are upset they have to refund ten cents for every bottle returned, thus increasing their retail prices by ten cents.

Sign this petition to Australia's Premiers, and tell them to stand up to Coke and implement a Cash For Containers recycling scheme

Lets get behind Australia’s Premiers and show them that we have their backs. It is the will of all Australians to keep Australia clean. Coca-Cola must be more accountable. With our support, the Premiers can stand up to Coke's intimidation.

Daily Voice : Urge the EPA to Save Bees
« Reply #303 on: May 04, 2014, 01:00:30 AM »
Urge the EPA to Save Bees

Native pollinators like bees play an essential role in the environment and are an indispensable part of our agricultural system. Many foods that we eat depend on crops pollinated by honeybees and 90% of all flowering plants require pollinators to reproduce. But in recent years, bees and other pollinators have been disappearing at alarming rates, causing widespread concern that these important species could be wiped out altogether.

A widely used class of insecticides called neonicotinoids affects pollinators including honeybees. Since neonicotinoids first became widely used in the mid-2000s, roughly one-third of Americaâ??s honeybee colonies have collapsed each year. Allowing even one more of these insecticides to be used on farms and orchards will only make the situation worse.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently approved a new insecticide called sulfoxaflor even though their own scientists considered the product to be similar to neonicotinoids and â??very highly toxicâ? to honeybees. We need to ensure that this insecticide, and others like it, does not get out into the environment. We cannot afford a collapse in pollinator populations.

Urge the EPA to refuse to approve any insecticides unless scientists confirm they present no threat to bees and other pollinators.
