Daily Voice : Congress: Pass the Humane Cosmetics Act!

Congress: Pass the Humane Cosmetics Act!

We've been given an epic reason to cheer this week with the introduction of landmark legislation that could end the suffering of millions of animals who are needlessly tortured and killed to test cosmetics in the U.S.

The Humane Cosmetics Act (H.R. 4148), which was introduced by Rep. Jim Moran, will make it illegal to conduct or commission animal testing for cosmetics after a one year phase in, which will be followed by a ban on the sale of products and ingredients that were made using animal testing after three years.

Even though animal testing is not required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the Product Safety Commission in the U.S., and despite the fact that alternatives to animal testing exist, many companies continue to test their products and ingredients on animals. In fact, the FDA leaves it up to companies to substantiate the safety of their own products and recalls are left entirely up to manufacturers.

Hundreds of ethical companies have already proven that valid alternatives exist, while dozens of other countries have taken steps to end animal testing for cosmetics. Now it's time for the U.S. to catch up and end this inhumane practice.

Please sign the petition asking your representative to support and co-sponsor the Humane Cosmetics Act.

Save the Indochinese Tiger in Thailand

There are fewer than 300 tigers remaining in Thailand, and a new dam project threatens one of their last intact habitats. The project would destroy a national park in western Thailand- flooding 8 square miles where tigers are having a sucessful recovery.

The Mae Wong dam also threatens tiger natural prey species such as wild pig and sambar deer. Creating the dam will push tigers out of their habitats and into direct conflict with human beings.

The Indochinese tiger is already under threat from shrinking habitat, illegal trade in tiger parts for traditional medicines and a scarcity of prey. With only 3,200 wild tigers remaining worldwide, we ask Thailand to support conservation efforts and protect critically endangered tigers and their habitat- not destroy it with the Mae Wong dam project.

No Wage Slavery

Join the movement to stand up for the American worker. Rep. Alan Grayson will deliver this petition to Speaker Boehner's office, demanding a raise in the minimum wage in 2014.

Sign your name today and and help us send a message to Speaker Boehner:

Millions of Americans make the minimum wage, but they can't survive on $7.25. They work forty hours a week, 52 weeks a year, and still struggle to feed their children and keep a roof over their heads. It's time to raise the minimum wage. I support Congressman Alan Grayson's "Catching Up to 1968 Act" to raise the minimum wage to $10.50 per hour, as do more than 100 economists. It's not just the right thing to do - it's the smart thing to do for our economy. We demand a raise in the minimum wage.

Congress: Don't Make Seniors Pay More to Keep Their Doctors!

For years, Congress has debated how best to stabilize Medicare pay for doctors. The issue has serious ramifications for Seniors across America - and without real solutions many risk losing their primary doctors.

Seniors have paid into Medicare through a lifetime of hard work and they deserve the security of knowing they can keep seeing the doctors they know and trust.

Too often, though, Congress's solutions involve forcing seniors to pay more.

It's time for Congress to take real, responsible measures to prevent seniors from losing their doctors by clamping down on drug companies' high prices, not forcing seniors to pay more.

Congress has kicked the can down the road for too long, but fixing this broken payment system on the backs of seniors is the wrong solution.

Help us send a message to Congress today: It's time for a solution that helps seniors keep their doctors without placing the burden on already strained pocketbooks!

Tell the EPA to Investigate Fracking Contamination!

Over the past year, the Environmental Protection Agency has repeatedly shut down its own fracking-related water contamination investigations after being pressured by the oil and gas industry.

Thanks to EPA whistleblowers, the Los Angeles Times reported that the fracking investigation in Dimock, PA was shut down despite evidence from EPA's water tests that Dimock's drinking water was polluted.

Tell the new EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy and President Obama to make sure the EPA does its job.

Pledge to Find a Way to Fight Wildlife Crime

Ruthless poachers around the world are killing elephants, tigers, rhinos and other precious wildlife. By pledging to find a way to fight wildlife crime, you will join IFAW in working to ensure that animals have the protection they need from the black market in wild animal products.

IFAW is working in Australia and around the world to protect elephants, rhinos, reptiles, birds and other animals from being exploited for commercial gain through the illegal wildlife trade. We're working to dismantle every link on the chain of wildlife crime — finding ways to stop the killing, stop the trafficking and stop the demand.

It's no easy task, needing hundreds of different actions in dozens of countries to make a difference. That includes training and equipping rangers, working with customs and Interpol, and running education campaigns to open peopleâ??s eyes to the damage that's being done.

Take the IFAW pledge to support a world where animals are protected from poachers and traffickers. By working together we can say, "I Found a Way to fight wildlife crime".

Daily Voice : Bring Nordic Model to Canada
« Reply #255 on: March 18, 2014, 01:14:13 PM »
Bring Nordic Model to Canada

On December 20th, 2013 the Supreme Court of Canada struck down the prostitution laws.  It gave the government one year to come up with a new law.  Legalizing brothels and decriminalizing prostitution in Canada will inevitably lead to increased sex trafficking and child exploitation.

In highly developed countries such as Sweden, Norway and Iceland there has been massive success in decriminalizing those being sold while criminalizing the purchase of sexual acts. The sex trade in Sweden has almost disappeared since they adopted the Nordic model and re-trained their police force in 1999.

The Nordic Model recognizes prostitution as an act of "male violence against women and children". This statement is supported by the staggering number of prostituted women who admit abuse is routine in their line of work.

There has been a significant reduction in Human Trafficking and Child prostitution in countries where Nordic Law has been implemented. Additionally, the number of women involved in prostitution has been radically reduced due to a lack of demand.

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands where Prostitution is regulated, Child Prostitution has tripled and researchers estimate that anywhere between 50 to 90 percent of 'sex workers' have been imported via human trafficking rings.

Taking into account the majority of prostituted women who claim they would exit the 'trade' if able, the Nordic Model also implements social programing to support those seeking rehabilitation, etc. These social programs also extend to men, discouraging the perception that women are commodities which can be bought.
