Daily Voice : Pledge to Practice Random Acts of Comfort for Cancer Patients
« Reply #240 on: March 03, 2014, 01:05:37 PM »
Pledge to Practice Random Acts of Comfort for Cancer Patients

Wanda was diagnosed with breast cancer on her birthday, five years ago. Before she headed home to cake and candles, her doctor told her what to expect: radiation, chemotherapy, surgery — and plenty of medical bills.

Over the next few weeks, Wanda found out that fighting cancer is about more than just medical treatment. She needed support, love, and kindness — she needed comfort. And Wanda's not alone — 1.6 million people in this country are diagnosed with cancer each year.

For these patients, the smallest gesture from a friend or coworker can mean the world. And when strangers offer random acts of comfort, it helps alleviate the isolation felt by those affected by this disease.

Together, we can help make sure that nobody faces the fight against cancer alone. You can offer random acts of comfort to cancer patients, whenever and wherever you can — whether they're friends or strangers. You can provide a shoulder to lean on, a hand to reach out to, a kind word and a smile.

Start with a moment of kindness today — pledge to practice random acts of comfort for cancer patients in need.

Send thanks to Greece for upholding ban on dolphin performances

After the decision to ban captive animal performances was recently challenged

by the Attica Zoological Park, the Greek parliament has overwhelmingly voted in favor

of upholding the ban. The Zoological Park, which exhibits a wide variety of exotic animals,

had tried to convince members of the parliament

to amend the ban because such performances are “educational”.

Articles 12 and 13 of Greece’s animal protection Law 4039/2012

expressly forbids the use of animals in recreational games, exhibitions, artistic or entertaining events.

Way to go Greece, it is the first step, second one is to release all cetaceans back to the ocean.

ΠΑΜΕ ΓΙΑ ΑΛΛΑ!!

Daily Voice : Stop McConnell's Attack on Climate Action

Stop McConnell's Attack on Climate Action

Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is launching an attack on EPA's proposed carbon pollution standards for power plants -- which over 100,000 EDF activists have stood in support of. These much-needed regulations would -- for the first time in American history -- set a national limit on carbon pollution from future fossil-fuel power plants.

Senator McConnell claims that it's a "cruel" rule, part of a "War on Coal" that would "devastate" his home state of Kentucky -- but his accusations just don't match up with the facts. A recent study actually came to the conclusion that it would be economically beneficial for Kentucky to diversify its power sources and invest in renewable energy -- which could supply over 30% of the state's power by 2025!

Tell your Senators to reject Sen. McConnell's war on climate action.

Do your part to help save our Ocean! Outlaw the use of plastic bags in Florida

Florida has the most miles of coast line in the United States.  We Floridians have the most to lose if we cant use our Ocean because of the plastics floating in our waters. Our Emerald colored water is becoming brown and full of toxins over time. The toxins and trash is not only affecting our beautiful water but its also killing the wildlife we love to watch! The birds and marine life are eating it because they think its food and its killing them.  We Floridians not only love to swim and fish in our Ocean but its nice to sit and watch the dolphins play too.

Im 10 years old and I hope that when I have children they will be able to love all the things about Florida that I love. If we keep allowing the use of plastic bags, my children may not get the chance to enjoy it, it will be yucky brown water. Just because you dont see it first hand, doesn't mean its not happening.

If we outlaw the use of plastic bags in Florida we can cut down on the amount of toxins that are going into our Ocean and help save the animals and beautiful water. Other states have already banned plastic bags or are charging shoppers for the bags.

Please help us make this change. Do your part, do your research, sign the petition.

Daily Voice : Get Justice for Dutch the GSP

Get Justice for Dutch the GSP

On October 13, 2013 Dutch, an 8yr old German Shorthaired Pointer, was running through Pennypack Park (as he did most days) when he was stabbed to death in the neck by Daniel Santosusso. Santosusso has admitted stabbing Dutch, but claims it was in self defense.  Dutch had gotten into a little squabble with Santosusso's dog months earlier, and ever since he has been threatning to kill Dutch, even showing another dog owner the knife he would use.

Nobody actually witnessed the stabbing, but as a GSP owner I can tell you they are friendly to people, playful with dogs and kids, and are not aggressive in any way (unless you're a squirrel or a rabbit).  I don't believe for a second that Dutch attacked Santosusso... he had been thinking about killing him for months, and needs to pay for it! Please tell the Phila PA SPCA and District Attorney to make Santosusso pay for murdering Dutch in cold blood.  For the full story see http://articles.philly.com/2014-03-05/news/47938412_1_beloved-dog-pennypack-creek-dutch

Stop the spring Bear hunt in Ontario

After a 15 year ban, Ontario is proposing to reinstate the spring bear hunt - including bear baiting and hunting with dogs - an inhumane practice that orphans bear cubs, causing them to starve to death.

Save a Child's Life

Every minute, a child dies from malaria. That adds up to 1,300 children a day, and more than 480,000 each year. 90% of those deaths are in Africa.

Even those lucky enough to survive still face major obstacles รข?? with malaria leaving more kids out of school than any other disease, forcing kids to miss up to 10 million days each year. The disease also wreaks havoc on the African economy, since it keeps adults out of work and unable to provide for their families.

While the toll of malaria is devastating, there is an end in sight. Malaria is transmitted by a mosquito bite, which means each and every case is preventable. Just one dollar buys a life-saving test and malaria treatment for a child in Africa.

At Malaria No More, we believe that the power of one person can create real change. We're determined to end deaths from malaria, and hope that you'll join us in our effort. If you believe no child should die from a mosquito bite, take the pledge to help us fight this disease today!
