End Horse Wrestling in Spain

http://forcechange.com/60732/end-horse-wrestling-in-spain/

Every July, a Spanish operation called Rapa das Bestas (translated as “shearing of the beasts”) takes place in Spain, whereby hundreds of men and women pit themselves against wild horses, wrestle the animals to the ground to assert bravery and dominance, shear their manes, and mark them bare handed. The ordeal is more than stressful for the hundreds of wild animals, many of whom have not experienced contact with humans before. Urge the Spanish Government and the President of Spain to find humane ways to celebrate Spanish tradition that does not involve terrifying these beautiful wild creatures. Horse wrestling carried out in such a manner should not be allowed.

The yearly process begins when the horses are released down a mountain in Sabucedo, in northern Spain, and let loose to run through the hills of the area while hundreds of participants chase after them. Young foals are separated from their protective mothers, and horse fights frequently break out in response to the traumatic situation. In addition to combating fellow horses, these animals struggle in vain to stay afoot when humans charge them in mass and pull them to the ground. Once captured, they are thrown to the floor and grabbed by the head, neck, and nose if they try to struggle, a usual result of the practice. They are then sheared and tagged amidst a chaotic environment.

Rapa das Bestas is a 400 year old tradition, and not one likely to disappear overnight. While cultural traditions are important, societies that grow more progressive are obligated to find ways of celebration that do not infringe on the wellness of sentient beings. Wild horses are unused to being handled, and it is certainly distressing for them to be chased and wrestled by hundreds of people in unfamiliar circumstances.

If tagging is necessary for reasons known to the Spanish people, then this can be done humanely and in as noninvasive a manner possible. The shearing of horses is merely a tradition, and one practiced at the expense of a wild horse’s well-being. Appeal to the President of Spain, Mariano Rajoy Brey, and urge him to help make the festival humane and stress-free for horses by outlawing wresting

The Arrows of Sorrows

Bow hunting is extremely cruel and painful. It terribly hurts, only if the hunters knew how it feels..........

Daily Voice : Ask Germany to Ban Dolphinariums
« Reply #210 on: January 30, 2014, 01:01:22 PM »
Ask Germany to Ban Dolphinariums

Greece has just followed India, Costa Rica, Hungary, the UK and Chile in upholding its ban on captive dolphins. An amazing number of countries still have dolphinariums, though, including several in the EU.

Among these is Germany, which has a number of places exhibiting dolphins, including the zoos in Nuremberg and Duisberg.

Captivity is a terrible thing for cetaceans, and it’s appalling that a generally progressive country still allows the dated practice to continue.

Germany does not need this. Almost nobody visits the country to watch imprisoned dolphins perform circus tricks. If anything, it detracts from Germany’s otherwise positive image.

Ask the German government to take immediate steps to close the remaining dolphin shows.

Tell Washington: I Shouldn't Pay the Price for Carbon Pollution

You're paying a high price for carbon pollution. As climate change continues, the financial burdens of floods, fires, rising food prices, and other climate-related problems fall heavily on taxpayers.

After careful analysis, the White House and the Office of Management and Budget have raised the estimated cost of carbon pollution -- an important factor in all of America's efforts to fight climate change. But the dirty air lobby is fighting back.

Don't let them win. Voice your strong support for using the best science in calculating the cost of carbon pollution today!

1 in 5 Kids Face Hunger in America. You Can Help

There is more than enough food in America to feed every man, woman and child. But according to the USDA, nearly 16 million children in the U.S. suffer from food insecurity - that's more than 1 in 5 kids in your community and across the country who may struggle to thrive and fall behind in school because they don't have enough to eat.

Along with seniors and the working poor, children are among the most vulnerable in uncertain economic times. With family budgets pushed to the limit, mothers and fathers are forced to make impossible choices each month. Food or rent? Rent or medical bills? Heat or medicine?

By showing your support for Feeding America and their nationwide network of food banks, you are taking the first step in helping secure millions of meals and provide them to children and their families in need through local food pantries, shelters, and soup kitchens. This simple act can alter the path a child takes in life.

We all have a role to play in making sure every child and family has enough to eat. Together, We Can Solve Hunger... and it starts with you. Pledge to help fight childhood hunger today.

Demand That Canada Stop Transporting Pigs During Extreme Weather

Members of the group "Toronto Pig Save" have held a weekly vigil outside the Quality Meat Packers slaughterhouse in Toronto, Canada since July 2011.  They have witnessed firsthand the astonishing cruelty facing thousands of pigs as they are transported by truck to their deaths.  In the summer, the pigs swelter in incredible heat.  Most recently, during the bone-chilling cold snap, the pigs have been subjected to hours of travel in -20F degree weather in trucks open to the air.  They have no food, water or warmth for up to 36 hours at a time.  They arrive at the slaughterhouse frostbitten, shivering, some of them actually frozen to the sides of the metal truck.   This is inhumane and unacceptable.

Please sign this petition asking Minister Gerry Ritz and Minister Rona Ambrose to take action to better enforce Canada's existing animal transport laws and to urge them to pass more protective laws.

Daily Voice : Federal Ban on Steel Jaw Leghold Traps
« Reply #214 on: February 04, 2014, 01:03:48 PM »
Federal Ban on Steel Jaw Leghold Traps

Steel jaw leghold traps- nasty, cruel mechanical devices, designed to grasp an animal by the leg using spring-operated metal jaws. In their desperation to escape the pain and terror of being trapped, the captured animal will sometimes bite off the limb that has been caught. They catch unintended animals, including birds, domestic pets and animals of rare species. Trappers unintentionally kill literally millions of non-target animals every year.

About 100 countries - excluding the United States, Canada and Russia - have so far banned the use of leghold traps on the grounds that they are inhumane and indiscriminate. Britain (where they are called gin traps) was one of the first countries to outlaw them in the 1950's and the European Union banned steel-jaw leghold traps in 1995.

There is ample scientific evidence to show that even if an innocent animal survives the trapping, it often ends up with damaged tendons or ligaments in its efforts to escape. Trapped animals still suffer from torsion injuries, fractures, soft tissue damage and other limb injuries. Innocent animals caught by mistake often have to be euthanased as a result.

We ask for a ban in all 50 states, a Federal ban, that makes steel jaw leghold traps illegal in the United States.

Daily Voice : Fight Against the Extermination of the Amazon Pink River Dolphin

Fight Against the Extermination of the Amazon Pink River Dolphin

I intentionally used the word "extermination" instead of extinction. These gentle creatures are being killed and exported to other counties due to the complete lack of a serious ambiental policy in Brazil.

Besides being affected in their numbers due to extinction of forest areas and the illegal fishing of the species, Brazilian authorities simply do not ssem to care. Ignorance made it a belief that they have "magical powers," and that eating their flesh leads to an increased sexual performance. This is one of the main reasons for their decreasing numbers in Amazon. They are hunted and killed to supply this stupid and equivocated market of ignorant consumers. With no real serious concern of the responsible legal agencies such as Ibama.

Another reason for their near extinction is that they are being used as baits for fishing. Hunters are being hired to kill them to that effect, so that their flesh is used in Colombia for the fishing of the "piracatinga." Many foreign TVs have come to document this tragedy. Nevertheless, we Brazilians can't see any real action being taken by local authorities to put an end on this massacre. Instead of allowing their reckless and barbaric killings, we wish the authorities to promote a campaign of preservation and local ecological tourism. Animal abusers must be put in jail.
