BC Hydro, Protect Migratory Birds from Your Hydroelectric Plant!

A key habitat in “North America’s bird nursery” will be harmed, nests will be drowned and important feeding areas flooded if B.C. dams the Peace River at Site C, according to Environment Canada. BC Hydro needs to do more to protect this national treasure.

While BC Hydro did come up with a proposal to mitigate environmental impact, Environment Canada doesn't believe they're going far enough to protect these birds. More research is needed on better ways to protect the wetlands before BC Hydro can forward with their plan.

According to Environment Canada, 247 bird species use the area, including up to 30,000 songbirds and woodpeckers that breed in the reservoir impact zone.

In a single month, 11,000 shorebirds migrate along the river corridor. While BC Hydro has taken some steps to mitigate environmental impact, more needs to be done. Tell BC Hydro to protect migratory birds by performing more research into the proposed hydroelectric plant site.

Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Group please stop booking excursions to SeaWorld.

Sir Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Group, is involved in many great humanitarian and conservation initiatives so it came as a surprise that Virgin Group would support trips to SeaWorld. We are asking Sir Branson and Virgin Group to cease offering these excursions on their Virgin Holidays website due to the plight of the marine mammals at SeaWorld.

The marine mammals are forced to listen to blasting music and screaming people at the SeaWorld shows. Cetaceans, such as the Orcas used in these shows, have extremely sensitive hearing. It is proven that they hear much higher frequencies than we do and therefore, the loud music and cheering crowds are painful and disturbing for the dolphins in captivity. They also have a shorter life span in captivity due to stress and are prone to developing mental heath problems.

Please watch the movie Blackfish to get an understanding of the trauma these animals are subjected to.  They are kept in bathtub like enclosures away from their pods and natural environment. This is a cruel and depressing existence.

We hope Sir Branson and Virgin Group will do the right thing for these magnificent animals by cutting ties with SeaWorld and helping further Sir Branson's conservation efforts. Your powerful voice is needed.

Daily Voice : Protect Miners from Big Coal's Deadly Greed

Protect Miners from Big Coal's Deadly Greed

Gary was a hardworking miner in the dangerous coal mines of Appalachia when his lungs became choked and hardened by deadly black lung disease. He and his family were counting on the compensation the coal industry is supposed to pay - but Big Coal had other ideas.

An explosive new report documents how Gary and thousands of other ailing men and women were denied that money by an elite team of lawyers and doctors who lied and hid evidence to protect coal profits.
It is clear - Big Coal is poisoning miners the same way it poisons our land, air, and water.

Outraged, Senators Bob Casey and Jay Rockefeller have pledged to introduce legislation to protect these workers from Big Coalâ??s greed. But you can bet the coal companies and their lawyers are going to fight every step of the way.

Senators Casey and Rockefeller are fighting an uphill battle. Send them a message to let them know that the public supports justice for the miners and that it's time for these companies to pay the true cost of dirty coal.

Don't Let Dogma Destroy Our Oceans

Once again oceans are being put at risk by anti-government dogma. Rep. Bill Flores of Waco, Texas (a non-coastal district) has attached a rider to the Water Resources Development Act that would prohibit the U.S. Army Corps Engineers from coordinating with coastal states on any ocean project.

Superstorm Sandy demonstrated the challenges coastal states face in dealing with large storms, degraded coastal infrastructure and the ever-expanding development along our coastline. The increasing number and severity of storms will only make these challenges larger and more difficult to address. We need regional ocean planning and we need all federal agencies -- including the US Army Corps of Engineers â?? to be fully involved partners in regional ocean planning efforts.

To translate President Obama's National Ocean Policy and the National Endowment for the Oceans (NEO) into on-the-ground actions to benefit the American people, Congress must pass the Water Resources Development Act without the Flores rider. Effective implementation of the National Ocean Policy is critical to enhancing our national security, supporting our coastal economies and the millions of American jobs that depend on them, while improving the health of our ocean resources and supporting local choices.

Please join us in calling on Congress to reject the Flores rider and support the full implementation of the National Ocean Policy.

Daily Voice : Urge Congress to Support Clean Wind Power

Urge Congress to Support Clean Wind Power

Whether you live in rural Iowa or downtown Chicago, adding wind energy to the electric generation mix helps your utilities reduce electricity prices across the regions they serve. Because it has zero fuel cost, wind energy protects consumers from volatile fossil fuel prices; much like a fixed-rate mortgage protects homeowners from fluctuating interest rates. However, the government may not renew crucial tax credits that allow wind energy companies to produce efficient, low cost energy right here in the U.S.

America needs a secure, diverse supply of homegrown energy resources to power the nation. We also need to put more people back to work. Wind energy delivers in both of these areas with help from the federal renewable energy Production Tax Credit (PTC) and Investment Tax Credit (ITC).

The PTC and ITC have also been effective tools to keep electricity rates low and encourage development of proven renewable energy projects. These credits have driven tremendous wind industry investment, supported manufacturing advances, and reduced costs. However, these tax incentives are set to expire at the end of 2013.

Urge Congress to establish stable policies for the renewable wind industry beyond December 31.

STOP killing safari animals for behaving 'badly' NOW

STOP KILLING INNOCENT WILD ANIMALS IN CAPTIVITY

This morning I turned on the news to see an Elephant had been killed in a South African safari park due to a British couple getting their car flipped by the elephant.

I watched the footage of the elephant ‘flipping’ the tourist’s car, and you can see they were clearly getting too close to the animal.

After seeing this on the news I began looking online at the articles where the couple claim ‘they’re lucky to be alive’, after reading the comments other people had left I knew this was a problem that needs addressing.

The tourist were practically tailgating the elephant, they have entered the elephants home and provoked the elephant. Here is a quote off one website I found “The person who filmed the attack, who wished to remain anonymous, told News 24 it looked like the tourists had been trying to drive past the elephant but it was clear the elephant was agitated.” This just shows the stupid behaviour that people carry out when visiting safari parks.

Animals are put down when they ‘misbehave’ because it could easily become a pattern of behaviour, THIS NEEDS TO STOP! Animals are WILD for a reason, they fight in the WILD, it’s a way of life for them and they shouldn’t be kept in captivity!

Safari parks need to enforce fines and punishments for when people mistreat, enrage or bully animals for their own pleasure or just for a ‘closer’ photo!

With this petition i would like to gain two things for the sake of animals and the wildlife; firstly I believe we NEED to STOP killing animals and send them back into the wild, where they belong! and Secondly Safari Parks are always going to exist so we NEED to enforce RULES and LAWS which result in fines or criminal offences to people who disregard the rules, laws and animals safety and welfare.

Please sign this petition to get the message across!

SAVE THE ELEPHANT

SAVE THE ANIMALS

Protect Social Security; Protect the Economy!

Recently Congress has taken a worrying interest in cutting and changing Social Security - seemingly without realizing just how far reaching its impact and benefits are.

Not only is Social Security absolutely vital to the Americans who rely on it as a social security net - it also has a tremendous, positive impact on our economy as a whole.

A new report by the AARP Public Policy Institute found that Social Security adds more than $1 trillion to the U.S. economy each year. Thanks to the benefits provided by Social Security, nearly 21.4 million Americans avoided poverty, including 1.1 million children and 14.5 million adults 65-plus.

Social Security is much more than the foundation of income security for people as they get older. It is also an important contributor to our overall economic health.

Congress must not cut Social Security without considering the devastating effects that would have on the seniors who rely on it AND our economy as a whole.

Let your representative know the financial security of all Americans and our future economic growth depend on preserving and strengthening Social Security, NOT cutting it!
