Daily Voice : Stop the Anti-Wolf Agenda in Wisconsin!

Stop the Anti-Wolf Agenda in Wisconsin!

In just over two weeks, hunters and trappers in Wisconsin have killed off more than 181 wolves.

This unsettling discovery represents an extremely disturbing trend in anti-wolf attitudes and killings; one that we as wildlife supporters have a duty to try and stop.

News reports suggest that livestock and hunting and trapping interests have succeeded in taking over Wisconsinâ??s state Wolf Advisory Committee.

This is a frightening reality, seeing that the committee is responsible for making recommendations for their stateâ??s wolf management plan. To make matters worse, the committee removed independent scientific experts, and added livestock and hunting and trapping interests in their place!

Appallingly, the state has authorized the killing of 251 wolves this year — nearly one-third of the stateâ??s entire wolf population.

Take action and help us restore the unbiased and rightful balance to this committee that Wisconsinâ??s wolves need and deserve.

Daily Voice : Ask Italy to drop charges against soldier who saved a dying cat

Ask Italy to drop charges against soldier who saved a dying cat

Please sign and share this petition worldwide to take a stand for the dedicated soldier who had compassion to save the life of a dying cat.

It is quite disturbing that a soldier, Lieutenant Barbara Balanzoni, would be sent to military court in Italy because he was trying to the save the life of a dying cat.  Lieutenant Balanzoni has been returned to her civilian life and career as an anesthetist in Tuscany, facing charges of insubordination for saving the life of an animal. Her position in the army was medical officer at Nato in Kosovo.

Lt. Balanzoni received an alert from military personnel due to outbursts of cat noises at the infirmary.  She noticed a cat, later named Agata, a stray around the area, seemed to be in deep pain. The cat was delivering some kittens and, exhausted, could not deliver the last, which turned out to be stillborn.  Without help, this cat, the mom, would have certainly died. With the demise of the cat, not only would the entire area be subjected to total disinfecting, the surviving kittens would be orphans without food; no way to be fed. They too would have passed on if their mother was not saved. In essence, Lt. Balanzoni saved more than one life when attending to the needs of Agata.

The veterinary office was in Italy at the time and Balanzoni states “far from disobeying orders, I was following military regulations, which state that, in the absence of a vet, the medical officer should intervene.” So what did the officer do wrong if she was following regulations?  Charges against Lieutenant Balanzoni states that she disobeyed her commanding officer when told n one would be "bringing in or having brought in wild, stray or unaccompanied animals.” She faces a year in the military penitentiary.

Lt. Balanzoni is due to go to trial in Rome in about a month and we all need to help her by protesting this unjust act and accusations against her.  Italy’s oldest animal defense association, Ente Nazionale Protezione Animali is involved in the case and should stand behind the decision of this dedicated soldier who was doing what was in her heart and mind; saving a life.  Please sign and share this petition worldwide to take a stand for the dedicated soldier who had compassion to save the life of a dying cat and her kittens!!

Tell Google to stop going through your email to sell ads

Google earns money by violating your privacy. They go through every word of your personal Gmail so they can target you with ads.

Every word of every email. Even the most private ones, like messages about relationships, health care, finances, and more. Do you feel violated yet?

Even if you don't use Gmail, Google will still go through emails you send to Gmail addresses in order to sell ads -- despite you never having agreed to their terms of service. There is absolutely no way to opt out, whether you use Gmail or not.

It's time to take back your privacy. Sign this petition and tell Google to stop going through your emails to sell ads.

Daily Voice : Make Alzheimer's Disease A National Priority

Make Alzheimer's Disease A National Priority

Today, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, and that number is expected to skyrocket to as many as 16 million by 2050. Without major research breakthroughs, the cost of Alzheimer's between now and 2050 may total $20 trillion (in today's dollars).

Despite these staggering costs to our nation, chronic underinvestment continues in Alzheimer's disease research. For every $27,000 spent caring for those with Alzheimer's, a mere $100 is spent on research. That just doesn't make sense. Smart investments in other conditions have shown great success and are paying off, both in terms of cost AND lives saved.

Overcoming Alzheimer's will save lives and is vital to addressing our nation's fiscal challenges.

Please ask your elected officials to invest in Alzheimer's research, education, care and support activities.

Daily Voice : Demand Action for our Southwestern Desert Tortoises

Demand Action for our Southwestern Desert Tortoises

The federal government has revealed plans to shut down the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center in Nevada. This is an unsettling move that would require the removal and relocation of up to 1,400 captive desert tortoises into wild tortoise populations.

The concern is desert tortoises held in captivity are usually not equipped to survive in the wild. This also puts the wild, healthy desert tortoises at risk — as the captive population can bring disease, become a competing source for food and shelter, and attract predators.

Desert tortoises once roamed across the deserts of the Southwestern United States. In recent years, some estimates show their population has plummeted by as much as 90 percent, due to poaching, disease and habitat destruction.

Because of this rapid population decline, the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center has served an important role as a place where Americaâ??s displaced and injured desert tortoises could be cared for in a secure environment.

Act now! Urge Interior Secretary Jewell to help prevent a catastrophe for these threatened animals — and find a way to keep this center open.

Daily Voice : Ban Meat and Milk From Cloned Animal Offspring!
« Reply #189 on: January 09, 2014, 01:18:37 PM »
Ban Meat and Milk From Cloned Animal Offspring!

The European Commission seeks to ban meat and milk from cloned livestock, citing objections from most European Union (EU) citizens. The proposed regulations apply to cows, sheep, pigs, goats and horses.

Sadly, this ban would not affect meat and milk from the offspring of these animals. Worse, the proposed rules would not require products of cloned offspring to be labeled: the EU claims that labeling would be too complicated and expensive, and could anger their trade partners.

If EU citizens are ethically opposed to eating meat and milk from cloned animals, it stands to reason that many would be upset by eating products from the offspring of these clones. Due to ethical, religious and/or health reasons, people have the right to know the origins of the food they eat. Please sign the petition to convince the EU to ban meat and milk from the offspring of cloned animals!

Pledge to Help Elect Democratic, Pro-Choice Women to State & Local Office

Floridians are in trouble.

Governor Scott and the extremist Republicans controlling the Legislature are eroding women's rights and destroying our state's services, schools, and quality of life.

Ruth's List Florida is the only organization working full-time in Florida to connect women and elect Democratic, pro-choice women to state, county, and local office. And you know we need a lot more than we have now!

We can promote promising candidates, but we need the support of Floridians who will fight for a progressive state political agenda. Join us and take the pledge to support pro-choice, Democratic women legislators, help elect more of them, and oppose the extreme Republican agenda that's threatening Florida's women and families.
