Tell Target: Don't Support Slavery in Uzbekistan

How does Target keep its prices so low? Turns out some of Target's products might be so cheap because they are made with slave-picked cotton from Uzbekistan and/or purchased from Daewoo International, a company that accounts for approximately 20% of all cotton processed in Uzbekistan.

Every year, during the harvest season, over a million children and adults are ripped from their homes, schools and jobs, and forced to work in the cotton fields of Uzbekistan to meet daily picking quotas. They are often threatened and beaten.

Over 100 apparel companies (including Target) pledged not to buy slave-picked Uzbek cotton. Now, they're following up on their pledge by joining the Daewoo Protocol, declining to do business with Daewoo until it takes serious steps to stop sourcing slave-picked Uzbek cotton. Despite its promise, Target has not yet signed the Daewoo Protocol.

We expect more from Target, a company that takes pride in holding the highest ethical standards for itself and for its business partners. Tell Target to sign the Daewoo Protocol, a serious step toward fighting modern slavery in Uzbekistan.

Demand Justice for Mamana Bibi

Mamana Bibi, a 68-year old grandmother, was killed in October 2012 as she picked vegetables in her family's fields. The U.S. government has not acknowledged her death nor spoken to her grandchildren, some of whom watched the Hellfire missiles hit their grandmother while standing nearby.

We can't bring back Mamana Bibi but, through a process of accountability, we can stop the U.S. government from committing unlawful killings with impunity.

Urge President Obama to explain why and on what legal basis Mamana Bibi was killed, and urge Congress to initiate an independent and impartial investigation of her death and all other alleged unlawful killings resulting from U.S. drone strikes.

Daily Voice : Pledge To Speak Up Against Domestic Violence

Pledge To Speak Up Against Domestic Violence

It is estimated 1 in 4 women experiences domestic violence over the course of her lifetime. Domestic violence knows no boundaries: it affects women and girls of all socio-economic classes, races, ethnicities, and religions. Abuse, threats and violence often follow women beyond their front door and into their daily lives, including the workplace.

Though pervasive, domestic violence is all too often ignored -- treated as a "private" domestic issue, bruises hidden under clothing and makeup, fear camouflaged with a feigned smile.

Abusers depend on silence... It's time to bring domestic violence out of the silence. It's time to speak up, open our eyes, and amplify the voices of millions of survivors.

Pledge to be an anti-violence advocate during Domestic Violence Awareness Month and beyond!

Rebuild America on the Enduring Strength of Dr. King's Dream

Fifty years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and described a dream -- "a dream deeply rooted in the American dream" as he put it. One that emphasized the importance of equal job opportunities for urban America. His dream changed America forever.

But despite great gains that followed, massive challenges persist to this day. The African-American unemployment rate is higher in 2013 than it was in 1963!

This is why the National Urban League announced the historic initiative Jobs Rebuild America this year, in an effort to redeem Dr. King's American dream for many struggling Americans. Our 30-city outreach will train and place minority jobseekers, help entrepreneurs build their own businesses and groom young people for success in the modern workforce.

Economic stability is still an elusive dream for many in America, especially in the African-American community. We know the potential is there; with the right resources, we will help that dream come true.

Help rebuild America by supporting the National Urban League and fulfilling Dr. King's American dream.Â? Sign our pledge to show your support for the movement to educate, employ, and empower urban America.

We Want Healthy Rivers - Prioritize Water Conservation!

Across the West, water shortages are on everyone's mind. Rivers are drying. Temperatures are above normal. Water supply and the health of our rivers tops the list of issues that Westerners are very concerned about.

When we come up short, our first reaction is to get more. On a river, this means building diversions or dams which impede a river's natural flows. In the past, our approach has been piping billions of gallons of water across river basins to support growing communities and agriculture.

There is another long-term solution that has overwhelming support among Westerners -- water conservation. This solution recognizes that healthy rivers are critical to our economy, and our quality of life, and need to be protected for future generations. Help build the wave -- tell our elected officials to bring our rivers back from the brink and prioritize water conservation for all water users as a solution to meet future needs.

China - Put an End to Shorebird Trapping

With only about 100 breeding pairs left in the wild, the spoon-billed sandpiper is one of the most endangered birds in the world.  These tiny shorebirds are no bigger than a sparrow, yet one of the major threats to the species is illegal trapping for the meat industry.

In various places in China, mist nets, which indiscriminately trap every creature that flies into them, are used to catch huge numbers of migrating shorebirds, including the spoon-billed sandpiper and other critically endangered species.

Conservationists in China say the practice is widespread and apparently getting worse. Although the illegal bird trapping has been reported to the authorities, no action has been taken.

Tell the Chinese government to protect the endangered birds migrating through the country and put an end to illegal shorebird trapping.

Close Mink and Fox Fur Farms in Norway

For more than 10 years, the government coalition has been shown shocking photos of sick and injured animals and the conditions these animals are forced to live under- breaking Norwegian law, ignoring complaints and providing no promised improvement.

Evidence of "gruesome" conditions for animals at 24 fur farms around Norway, taken at fur farms from Troms in the north to Agder in the south, found minks with their hind legs bitten off, animals with huge sores on their heads and down their backs, animals with ears and tails that had been chewed off,- even a mother fox was found dead and rotting in her cage, while her pups struggled to survive in the same cage.

Support a controlled phase out of fur production in Norway.

Daily Voice : Protect Grizzly Bears' Habitat!

Protect Grizzly Bears' Habitat!

Perhaps one of the most iconic animals of the wilderness, the grizzly bear has lost an estimated 50% of its historic global range, and 98% of its habitat in the lower 48 United States. In Canada, development, roads, environmental destruction and other human impacts are threatening the habitat of species at risk, including this majestic bear.

Grizzlies need vast tracts of land to survive and thrive as a species — the home range of a male bear can be up to 2,000 square kilometers. That's why it's crucial we protect our natural spaces and the wildlife corridors that connect them.

That's where the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) comes in. In the past 50 years, NCC has helped to protect more than 2.6 million acres of ecologically significant land nationwide.

If you believe that protecting habitat for at-risk species like the grizzly is the best thing we can do to protect their future, sign our pledge. We'll let you know how you can help.
