I've kind of avoided this topic for the most part because it makes me wince a little but I think the time has now come to face up to it.
1. What was it for and why did God require it of the Jews?
2. Why are Christians exempt from it?
Any thoughts or opinions will be warmly and gratefully accepted but please keep any sharp implements to yourself.

Well my sharps are safe in the kitchen drawer.

I sat musing a little, im a little unorthodox i suppose in my approach, i am no scholar...so i like to ponder and see what comes.  There no doubt will be a correct theo answer out there.

My first thoughts are haven't men had to give something of themselves right from beginning until current day all in the name of covenants.

Adam his rib to in essence get his mate Eve.
Jewish men with circumcision in respect of Covenant made with Abraham.
Jesus Himself for mankind.
Man for their wives.

All left their mothers and fathers to join with their wives.  Even Adam.

Thanks for the reply.

It's not unorthodox to sit and muse a little
It's not unorthodox to ponder on what comes a little
But if I see you get your knives out of the kitchen drawer
It's not unusual to see me .... ?

1. What was it for and why did God require it of the Jews?
I guess it's first about separation and demarcation from those without faith: something that is irreversible, and irrevocable in the flesh, so worthy of a mark or sign in the flesh of the covenant promises. And what God mandated, had to be fulfilled. Moses had neglected it, due to pressure from Zipporah, and so God was going to kill Moses, but the rite was performed just in time. Exodus 4:24-26.

And then there is the shedding of blood. The covenant is a covenant of sacrifice and justification, which is by blood, and remained so, until the death of Jesus.

2. Why are Christians exempt from it?
Because Christ fulfilled the law by shedding his own blood. To go back to circumcision would be to unacknowledge it.

It's circumcision Of The Heart - in this day and age and relating to us/me. [this is the shadow of things to come]

It gets updated in Romans 2:29 referring to a pure heart unto God..  29 No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person?s praise is not from other people, but from God.

[I got myseklf got into trouble when my minister preached on  "Who shall ascend the Hill or the Lord"

See : https://www.christianfaithchatrooms.co.uk/home/onlinefreechristianchatrooms-index-html/who-shall-ascend-the-hill-of-the-lord

he said / No-one has a pure heart - it is all about Jesus and what Jesus  has done - I nodded my head [not realising that the minbister in training was behind me and watching ..

The following week he siad "someone here is disagreeing with meee [ops] - never disagree with a Minister..

Here circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, this is your upward ladder / hence the ongoing arguments about...

Jesus takes our place - or God inside of us..

So if you break the law of God - you are no longer circumcised.. it's the outward "in the OT"

Inward in the NT- so in a way it is not simply about "what Jesus did - it also incorporates your/ my/ repsonse..

Hennce the Holy Spirit responds back [in  circumsion of the heart.. and how far you are prepared to go]

Hence you have all these levels and and differences / I suppose you coud relate it to the stories of Elija and Elisha.

I think I did a study once on this - hold on ..  these were all steps  taken @ http://www.christianfaithforums.co.uk/search?q=steps

This was a shadow of what you would go through in the circumcision of your heart / many will bail out - some cpome back - some never come back..

Consider rooms and you have many rooms in your life - as God has many rooms prepared..

circumcision ensbles those rooms to be entered by the Lord - but you may well keep many rooms closed to God/ Jesus.

You are  the decider into how much flesh is cut off..

-

Liken it to pruning if you like.. the see the question here is "how far are you prepared to go?"

If you are truely of the Vine you would go all the way..you would be like Jesus..

Fantastic! Keep them coming.
3. Why did it have to be done on the eighth day after birth and could this relate to anything else?
4. Is it wrong to ask leading questions?
