'That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you,
that ye also may have fellowship with us:
and truly our fellowship is with the Father,
and with His Son Jesus Christ.'

(1 John 1:3)

Hello there,

Do you notice that in 1 John 1:3, fellowship for John is in imparting to others what he himself had seen and heard, as one who had lived in the company of the Lord Jesus Christ, seen the works that he did and listened to what He had to say. I believe that this is what true fellowship is. Not that which many seem to consider it to be, which is getting together for coffee and a chat.

'Truthing' : or 'speaking the truth in love' is what true fellowship consists of. That we 'may grow up into Him in all things, which is the Head, even Christ' (Ephesians 4:15).

Only as we have fellowship with the Father and the Son through the Spirit ourselves, can we have fellowship with each other, for we cannot give to others what we have not received ourselves.

Do you agree?  :D

With love in Christ Jesus
Chris

And yet 'getting together for a coffee and a chat' is one of the best ways I know for creating an environment in which true fellowship (including 'truthing') can take place.

'Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved,
bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another,
if any man have a quarrel against any:
even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
And above all these things put on charity,
which is the bond of perfectness.
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts,
to the which also ye are called in one body;
and be ye thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;
teaching and admonishing one another
in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed,
do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God and the Father by Him
.'

(Colossians 3:12)

Hello again,   :D

I have heard, that John Bunyan was saved as a result of overhearing the conversation of two women, who as believers, were themselves sharing together (or truthing) their mutual faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

We never know who may overhear our conversations as we sit on the bus, or at a cafe table, and share together what we have learned concerning the Lord Jesus Christ, and give glory to Him, or what fruit may come from it.  What opportunities there are to spread the gospel of God concerning  His Son our Lord Jesus Christ aren't there? which do not involve a pulpit or a building.

If the word of God is dwelling in us richly then we are equipped not only to bless one other, but to bless others who pass by too.

Thank you
In Christ Jesus
Chris

'That which was from the beginning,
which we have heard,
which we have seen with our eyes,
which we have looked upon,
and our hands have handled,
of the Word of life;

(For the life was manifested,
and we have seen it,
and bear witness,
and shew unto you that eternal life,
which was with the Father,
and was manifested unto us;)

That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you,
that ye also may have fellowship with us:
and truly our fellowship is with the Father,
and with his Son Jesus Christ.
And these things write we unto you,
that your joy may be full.'

(1 John 1:1-4)

Hello again,

How privileged the disciples were weren't they? John particularly, for we read that he 'lay on His breast'.   They heard the Lord Jesus Christ, saw Him, looked upon Him, and handled Him in the flesh (Luke 24:39).  Yet at the time of writing John knew Him in the flesh no longer (2 Corinthians 5:16).  He knew Him and acknowledged Him to be, 'The Word of Life' (John 1:14). For the Lord spoke only the words which His Father gave Him (John 12:49-50), and they were the words of life indeed.  Yet it was not until after He had risen from the dead that the disciples realised fully the significance of what they had seen and heard (John 13:7; John 14:19-21)), as the Holy Spirit brought them back to their remembrance as Jesus had promised in John 14:26 and John 16:13.

'He that loveth Me not keepeth not My sayings:
.. and the word which ye hear is not mine,
.... but the Father's which sent Me.
These things have I spoken unto you,
.. being yet present with you.
But the Comforter,
.. Which is the Holy Ghost,
.... Whom the Father will send in My name,
He shall teach you all things,
.. and bring all things to your remembrance,
.... whatsoever I have said unto you.'

(John 14:24-26)

Praise God!  For He is faithful that promised

In Christ Jesus

Hello @Cariad @Deborah

Yes within the fellowship of Christ , God knows our heart and true motives and whether His Word and Spirit, is the main purpose for fellowship, and is not secondary or just an appearance for ulterior motives, within relaxed gatherings.

For within other motives is the danger of wandering away from the truth, and bringing in godless chatter. 2 Timothy 2:16

Yet conversations seasoned with Salt will strengthen our relationship with Christ, and for each other and sow seeds to others. Colossians 4:6

 That's why we were called to be Salt of the world. Salt is valuable and needed by everyone and the world.
Without it the world is lost.

Hello @Christianna,

Yes, I see what you mean about 2 Timothy 2:16, and Colossians 4:6: they are certainly applicable to the subject.

@Earthman,

Hello there,

With respect to you, the 'truth' that believers are called upon to share is the Truth revealed in God's word concerning His Son the Lord Jesus Christ: and about the mercy, love and grace of God that we have been blessed with through our faith in Him.

Do you know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord, Earthman?

Thank you
In Christ Jesus
Chris
