Hi Serenity
Thank you for your reply and what you say is true but I believe our Lord was trying to tell something on a higher level that he would turn the water of God's word into wine the wine being his blood which he shed for us on the cross.
This is the true miracle.

Love and peace
Dave

Really Dave at the cost of the wedding parties guests?
If drunkenness so bad why add to it?
To make a greater 'spiritual point'?
So these people expendable?
Working it out to the end with your explaining suggests that people were thrown under the bus for the sake of some hidden spiritual metaphorical lesson.
Tut tut Jesus and God...where is the love?

Hi @Serenity
I've split the topic I don't thing our discussion has much to do with Genesis but I do thing it has great relevance in the world today.

So getting back to the water into wine.

.
5  His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

6  And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

7  Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

8  And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.

9  When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

10  And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

11  This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him

This was the first of his miracles it was done to show who he was not to get everyone drunk the wine represents the word of God The good wine is the gospel the wine served first is the word of God given to Israel.
Drunkenness is never approved of in scripture in fact it is seen as sinful.

So I will ask the question is there any difference between alcohol and other drugs is there any difference between downing a bottle of whisky and sticking a needle in your arm the only difference is one is legal and the other illegal but both are equally dangerous

Love and peace
Dave

Can't say i particular agree with this constant topic splitting that goes on as conversations evolve.  It is quite controlling, cleansing of threads.

Drunkenness is never approved of in scripture in fact it is seen as sinful.

Whatever the reason He did it for.  Whether it is your spiritualised interpretation of the Scripture or whether it is more the literal possibly rather irritated at His mothers asking of Him to sort out the wine at the wedding feast.
A feast which the guests were already merry.
A feast which did not just last a couple or even few hours.
A feast where they would save the crappy wine until last because once merry they wouldn't particularly notice the crappier wine.
A feast where serving up the best wine last was in no doubt going to lead to them all drunk.

So no matter what interpretation you would like to attach to the Scripture...the outcome and consequences for the guests would be drunkardness.

So for Jesus to make His spiritual point of who He was to His mother who already knew who He was, hence why she even probably asked Him to put His divine touch to things...people got thrown under the bus because they without a doubt would be drunk and as you say drunkardness is a no no.  So again where is the consideration let alone love for these people?

Was more to appease His mother than show a miracle or spiritual message at the time.  A spiritual message may have been a by product of it.

Would depend totally on the context and situation and place it is happening.

Even depends on the denomination or label people have.  Some belief systems stemming from Scripture or interpretation of, do not allow for even medical intervention.

Drinking a bottle of whiskey in your own house where you not likely to inflict yourself and drunken behaviour on others is your business.  Up to you if you gonna be a good steward of your body.  Permissable things are not always beneficial.

Sticking a needle in yourself is not in itself illegal.  It is the substances and contexts of taking them that either is or is not illegal, or moreover the possession of.  Ie diabetes vs heroine.

Also regarding legalities of man, as a general rule you are to follow the law of the land unless the law of God supercedes it.  You decide what the law of God is, it seems to be subjective to each person depending on how they want to manipulate it to more often than not benefit themself.

Hi Serenity
Thank you for your reply I was wondering where this thread went to good it was moved not very suitable for bible buddies.

So back to the subject in hand is alcohol like a loaded gun quite harmless till you pull the trigger then it can kill alcohol kills many every day not to mention the abuse and violence other family members have to put up with especially children.
If alcohol was invented today would it be classed as illegal with all the other drugs that are out there so drugs are detrimental to human beings.
Is the taking of drugs including alcohol so prolific because of the state of the world we live the words of our Lord come to mind.

.
5  For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

6  And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7  For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

8  All these are the beginning of sorrows.

9  Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.

10  And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

11  And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

12  And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

13  But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved

Love and peace
Dave
