Broken cisterns
« on: July 13, 2019, 08:34:25 PM »

"My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken me,
the spring of living water,
and have dug their own cisterns,
broken cisterns that cannot hold water."
(Jeremiah 2:13)

Those of us who give money towards water projects in developing countries know how grateful people are when they can get clean water directly from a tap or well, instead of having to trudge for miles to a dirty pond or river. And even before the invention of modern plumbing, nobody in their right mind would have preferred a puddle of brackish water in a cracked cistern to the clean fresh water that flows from a perennial spring!

God alone is the Source of all blessing, overflowing with good gifts for His people. We humans, however, are proud and independent; we would rather "do it ourselves" (however inadequately) than be beholden to Him! But if we turn our backs on the living God, we shall suffer in the long run; for we do not have it in us to be spiritually self-sufficient. The idols that we make for ourselves will never be able to satisfy our deepest needs.

"Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of living water welling up to eternal life." (John 4:14)
"Blessed is the one who always trembles before God,
but whoever hardens their heart falls into trouble." (Proverbs 28:14)
