Hi Deborah
Thank you for your reply I see what you mean about V 21 and will include it again.

1Jn 3:21  Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God;
1Jn 3:22  and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.
1Jn 3:23  And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.
1Jn 3:24  Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

v 21-22 Yes we can be confident before God if we keep our hearts right before him and what ever we ask according to his will we will receive but this is dependant on keeping his commandments.
V 23 and his commandments are to believe in his beloved son Jesus Christ and to Love him and to Love one another friend and foe alike much easer to write than to do but if we ask he will give us the strength to do it Love is the greatest power in the universe only Love can overcome evil.
V 24 So let us keep his commandments by so doing we can be sure we will remain in him and him in us we can be sure and have confidence because we will receive the Holy Spirit which helps us in the way we should go.

Love and Peace

v21,22

Prayer does not exist in a vacuum, divorced from the rest of one's life. Genuine prayer arises out of a relationship with God: from our point of view, it presupposes an attitude of reverence, worship, and a desire to obey Him (Psalm 66:16-20). Such a person can have absolute confidence that God will answer their prayers.

v22,23

What is required of us is not painstaking adherence to every little rule of the Law, but just two basic essentials: faith and love. If we have these, then we know that God is not only with us but within us - as His Holy Spirit.

I had a father, but because of his serious mental health problems (dating back to when I was a young child) my relationship with him was always difficult and somewhat distant.
I don't know about "adapting Scripture" - surely we all have a mental concept of an ideal father? Even if our own was deficient or non-existent, we can observe other people's fathers. And even a good father doesn't measure up to God's perfect Fatherhood.

My experience was that God created a relationship with me - it wasn't something that I had to do on my own. It was through becoming a Christian that I learned the meaning of relationship. There are also examples in Scripture to teach us what it means to know God.

Hi Tes
Thank you for your reply you said.

For myself I had wonderful parents lots of love but even so our heavenly father is something above that when we think of everything he has done for us and is still doing even for sinners we can be absolutely sure he loves us.
You said how do we adapt scripture I don't think adapt is the right word I think we should believe the scriptures to meet our needs.
If our earthly parents let us down we know we have an heavenly father who will never let us down have faith.

Moving on.

.1 John 4

1  Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2  Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

3  And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world

V 1 here we are encouraged to test the spirit I think this means to test everything we are told pertaining to God how should we test it the only way is by the scriptures we know we can trust God's word.
We need to be very careful there are so many false prophets out there in this day and age so test everything.
V 2 here we are given a sure way to test the spirit of the spirit tells us that Christ is the son of God and has come in the flesh we can be sure they have come from god.
V 3 Here we are warned of the spirit of the anti Christ which is everywhere in our day and age everywhere we look we are being told there is no God his attacks are everywhere because he knows he only has a short time left.
The anti Christ has been in the world since John's time but now with modern technology he can reach every corner of the world but so can we so get out there and refute him and post the truth God's word is the truth.

I John 4:1-3
Anyone can claim to be inspired by the Holy Spirit - so we shouldn't accept any teaching or prophecy uncritically. Gullibility is not a Christian virtue!
What we need to check for is orthodox doctrine, and the supreme test (not the only one) is what people say about Jesus. Anyone who casts doubt on either His deity or His humanity must be a false teacher or prophet, and should be ignored.

Hi Deborah
Thank you for your reply a good summing up of those verses.

1Jn 4:4  Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
1Jn 4:5  They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them.
1Jn 4:6  We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

V 4 Here John addresses us as little children as the children of God we were born of him when we were baptised into the body of Christ not only are we in Christ but he is in us and he is greater than him who is in the world which is satan so if we keep Christs commands we overcome satan as Christ did when he obeyed the fathers commands.
V 5 here he is speaking of the spirits of the world those sent out by satan which is meant to lead us away from God and the world listens to them this is why there is so much misery in the world because the world listens to the evil spirits instead of the spirit of God.
V 6 here John tells us we are from God who is the we I think it is those who are mature in Christ the apostles those who know God are those who have been baptised into the body of his dear son Jesus Christ.
Those who are outside the body do not listen to the word of God so it all boils down to which spirit we listen to the spirit of truth or the spirit of error.
