The prophecies of Amos part 2
« on: January 06, 2019, 08:38:23 PM »
I've been unable to post any new material on the "Prophecies of Amos" thread for several weeks due to a computer glitch. Just now I tried to post a reply on another thread - and succeeded! So, in the hope that it's just that one thread affected, I shall try to carry on by restarting the thread...

"You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light." (I Peter 2:9)

Second post failed - still trying to work out why some things get through and others don't.

Amos 7:14,15

(14) Amos answered Amaziah, "I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. (15) But the LORD took me from tending the flock and said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel."

But Amos was a simple shepherd, not a 'professional' prophet (Amos 1:1). He had not chosen his vocation; he had been called by God. And he had neither formal qualifications nor official authorisation to prophesy. He had a divine commission to deliver God's word to Israel, not Judah - and so to Israel he must deliver it!

Hi Deborah
Its great to see you posting again you have been missed and I look forward to continuing with this thread.

It is interesting that God chose Amos a lowly shepherd it reminds me of our Lord choosing his apostels he did not go to the priesthood or the well educated but to ordinary I assume uneducated people except for maybe Mathew and Paul.

Maybe he prefers to work with a clean slate so to speak.

Many people complain about the justice of God, asking what about those who have never heard.
Here we have a prophet of God foretelling what will happen and the leaders and the people will not listen. Instead they complain about his 'distastefull ' message.

Ever notice that the OT prophets are sent to bring people back to God. They are not sent with pleasent messages but with challenging, hard to listen to messages.

But if listened to and obeyed then there is salvation.

Amos 7:16,17

(16) Now then, hear the word of the LORD. You say,
"Do not prophesy against Israel,
and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac."

(17) Therefore this is what the LORD says:
"Your wife will become a prostitute in the city,
and your sons and daughters will fall by the sword.
Your land will be measured and divided up,
and you yourself will die in a pagan country.
And Israel will surely go into exile,
away from their native land."

In the face of opposition, Amos stuck to his guns - and gave Amaziah a personal message from God.
All Amaziah's efforts were in vain; he could not silence the word of God. The word that he had rejected he would live to see fulfilled in the sufferings of his own family. The land that he had tried to shield from Amos would be taken over and carved up by a foreign power. And the nation of Israel would indeed be taken into exile, never to return...
"You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light." (I Peter 2:9)

If Judah represent the people of God, the Israel represents those who have once known the gospel but no longer follow it.
If this is true then the no longer Christian west as they seek to silence the preaching of the goapel face Gods judgement for seeking to do that.

Hi Deborah
Thank you for your post verse 16 is what is happening to day the powers that be seam to be saying don't prophesy we don't want to know there is no God.
But what happened to Israel will happen to the world as we know it it will be changed transformed into the paradise God intended from the beginning.
Let us pray that Kingdom come.

Love and Peace
