I thought this brillient.
A primary head told the pupils to justify celebrating Christmas or it was cancelled.

They did .

As the head said Christmas is a celebration of Jesus's birth.

Hi John
The question is should we be celebrating Christmas on the 25 of December when we don't know when Jesus was born and it seems the early church did not celebrate it.

Google this.
.  The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine (he was the first Christian Roman Emperor). A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on the 25th December

It seems the 25th of December was part of a pagan Roman feast.
So should we celebrate his birth at Easter when he was reborn in the Spirit.

Love and Peace

Hi Dave

We don't know when Jesus was born, so whatever day we select to celebrate it is totally arbitrary. Like the Queen, He has an "official" birthday.

And why not Dec 25th? OK, it's linked to the ancient festivals that celebrated the lengthening of days after the winter solstice. But that makes it a highly appropriate choice - because Christ's coming into a dark world brought us hope (just as the lengthening of the days is a promise that summer will come again). There's enough happening at Easter already to celebrate His death and resurrection, so to add His birth into all that would just be confusing. (And we can't even agree on a date for Easter....)
"His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life." (II Peter 1:3a)

Did you even read the article Dave ?
A headmaster challenged the children, 'Why celebrate Christmas? he/she also pointed out the reason for the season. i.e. the birth of Jesus.

As for the stupidity of pagan ideas. Please look at the days of the eek where we worship the sun, moon, thor woden Thursday I don't know, Friga, and saturn
.
Then we can move n to the pagan roots of the month.
See what I mean about stupidity, especaily as jesus told us rite and ceromonies are garbage so long as we are worshiping him in all sincerity, hoesty and with our whole being. ref see jeus and the samaritan woman at the well.

Hi John & Deborah
Don't get me wrong I love Christmas but your opening post made me think of what Christmas means yes a celebration of the birth of Christ but does it mean that for everyone.
Or is it just an excuse for eating and drinking to excess getting into debt.
What do the scriptures say about celebrating Christ's birth very little nothing at all in fact and Christmas was not celebrated in the early church and did not come into being until over 300 years later.
May be the early Christmases were a celebration of the birth of Christ but it seems in this day and age it's all about having a good time makes one wonder if it's satans way of directing our attention away from the real reason for Christmas.

Love and Peace

Dave,
all we are told is, Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. col 2:16+17.

We are to ceelebrate Christ's birth in what ever way we think appropriate.

The argument -is between the Lambing season [knowing what we know now - giving the inter web] and its info]

The argument is also about our silly stuff - that we use [outside/ surface/ evidence of our inward  state..]

Neither really gives anything as Christmas is when Jesus has  captured a heart.

Nothing to do with money or the time of year...

So - the birth is different for every single person..
