Had an unusal evening service yesterday. A talk from a person who's mission is to reach out to the lonely elderly in the community.
I forget the stats, but there are more elderly people alive today than young people and most are lonely and isolated.

The challenge is how are we reaching out to these people who will not and in many cases cannot come to us?

Key to any outreach is a committed team and building confidence/trust with carehome managers/local authorities and service providers.

Councils are cutting budgets, reducing services for the elderly etc and as Christians involved in churches we have, a building that can be used, people who are willing to give an hour or two a week and the oppertunity to reach those on the edge of eternity.

How? really depends on your church and the community.
Offering a nonreligous social event will start bring people in, offering to take this sort of event into care homes will, in many resource poor home, be welcome.
Once confidences have been gained a Christian message can be introduced, montly services offered on a Sunday.

Trust built with care home managers will lead to contact with the social services and other sevice providers who are all struggling to copy with lonely isolated elderly people.

Again volunteers willing to listen to the elderly builds confidence and leads to the involvement in other activities.

Confidenced/trust earnt with council service providers can open doors into schools to involve children with the elderly in day time activities. Evening activities can involve the churches own young people, as waiters for a retro diner dance, team quiz nights etc.

It is really a matter of is there a vision to reach out into the community.
