We had an interesting sermon yesterday that started justifying all the rules and regulations, and like how if it's the Sabbath in a Jewish household, they're not allowed to the switch the light on so they ensure it's not switched off. The sermon basically excused this as focusing on God and having a time of rest. Im pretty sure God doesn't really care if you turn the light on or not.

Anyhow, paraphrasing, they basically went on to suggest that the Pharisees were basically good people trying to get themselves and others closer to God and Jesus's argument was essentially that they were getting people to God the wrong way.

This reminds of sermons I've heard in the past about there being many paths to God, and how it's wrong for Christians to assume that we have the truth. Other religions may have the truth as well.

I just started thinking heresy. Im sure Paul and Christ were firmly against these sorts of rules and regulations which serve actually as a separation to God!

Thoughts?

Yes the Pharisees were basically 'good' men seeking God. but they were doing in by following the rules and exceptins to those rules were not allowed, worse they were not listening for God to speak to them.

How should we respond to calls for rules and regulations in a Christians life?
We need to remember that we are saved through faith in Jesus and not by keeping rules etc. That said rules can guide us in how we should live and act.
The pharases were getting people to God, they ere actively stopping people from coming to faith in jesus.

Are there many paths to God?

Jesus said 'I Am the Truth, the Life and the Way, No One comes to the Father but by me.' That says there is only one way.
