Lost my Belief in God Help!
« on: July 30, 2018, 05:42:40 PM »
Hi there.

I hope someone can give me some words of wisdom or encouragement  or something! I have lost my belief in God and Christ. This has happened over a period of time with a few key events basically putting the nail in the coffin as it were.

I have been a Christian since 18, I am now 45 with three fantastic children and lovely wife. I have always questioned my faith (in a positive way) and were I have found conflicting issues, I have basically put these to the side and ignored them. Some of these issues are church based (i.e. stance on homosexuality and the role of women) while others are trying to understand why god lets things happen (the holocaust, school shootings in the US etc). But as I mentioned above, there have a been a few things which have made me question my faith, these being:

Child Sexual Abuse
I have a real issue with this one. I have always struggled with why God lets bad things happen, but the issue with child abuse is one I can't square. How can God let children be sexual (or physically) abused by adults? we all know the effects this has on the victim, their family, mental health, future relationships is devastating. What's even worse is that some of the men that have done this are supposed to be members of the clergy! An apparent lifetime in damnation doesn't do much for those poor victims now! God is supposed to be our father. how can he sit by and let this happen to children!!

Child Disability
A good friend of mine has a son with a life limiting illness. the stress on the family must be intense, I wouldn't be able to cope in his position. my Friend's an atheist (I can understand why). wouldn't it be an amazing testament to God if he cured that boy! but no, they go on struggling with no hope at the end of the day.

Death of Friend
A friend (same age as me) collapsed and died of a heart attack. He was a Christian and was married with 3 young children. why him? I know that death comes to us all eventually but God has let this happen while letting other men abuse children!!!

Prayer
Things wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the issue of prayer. I appreciate the prayer isn't a request list to God. However its not unusual for apparent 'miracles' to happen as a result of prayer and proof of God's love to us. It just seems that this is on a very selective basis.

In summary
I don't want to come across as someone who because their prayers haven't been answered, I no longer believe. My questioning of prayer is not that my prayers haven't been answered but those who's prayers really need to be answered aren't. I think I've just come to a place where I feel there are more reasons not to believe in God than to believe. You may say that God does answer our prayers its just not the answer we want to hear. That's what ive been telling myself for the last few year but that's no longer enough.

I suppose I don't know what I want from posting on here. Questioning and losing my faith is still causing issues within me. I've not suddenly become a bad person or do bad things now i'm no longer a Christian. I suppose I still want to believe but I cant. the explanation of original sin, Satan etc are not enough to explain why these things happen. Surely if we give God the credit for the good stuff, what about the rest of it?

I know I've really rambled and I probably come across a bitter individual. I'm really not. I've just got to this place where I've given up on God (but would love a miracle to bring me back!).

Hold firm in there.
First of all I will mention love. Jesus Christ loves you very very much with a love that your wife, parents or anyone else can't equal.
Now regarding why God allows sin. This is only temporary. We see some terrible things in this world, but to God, a small sin or a big sin is all sin. The worst sinner can repent and turn to Jesus Christ and live. God is giving people every chance so no one can say that they were not given the chance to repent. I have noticed something, though I dont know if this is true. Some of the nicest people I know have died before they have reached a ripe age and some of those who have lived lives where they would do some horrible things have lived ripe old ages. Why? Because God is trying to give them a chance as he doesn't want them to end up in Hell.
You see this life has nothing to offer compared to Heaven.

Hi there

As you know already, there are no easy answers to the problem of suffering. The questions you're asking have been asked since the beginning of the human race (see, for example, the book of Job). Makes you wonder why anyone believes in God at all - and yet many people who have suffered great deal have maintained their faith in God.

Part of the problem is that we do want neat, tidy logical answers - and God, it seems, isn't going to provide them. We do have a few clues:

1) Sin is the cause of most human suffering in our world. One day God is going to abolish sin - but He hasn't yet, because when He does, the world that we know will come to an end and there will be no more opportunities for anyone to repent (II Peter 3:9). For now, if God intervened regularly to prevent sin, we would lose our free will. Perhaps that's too high a price to pay...

2) A large amount of suffering is caused by the way the world is constructed (earthquakes, etc). But we now know that without plate tectonics, our planet would not be habitable. We can't have the good without the bad.

3) God really will put an end to all suffering! (Revelation 21:4)

Now we may not like the world that God has created - a world in which actions have consequences, bad as well as good. But that's the world we have to live in. We can't pick out particular sins (e.g. child abuse) and demand that God should stop them - where would we draw the line? Removing God doesn't reduce or abolish any suffering; it just removes all hope.

The other issue you raise is prayer. I doubt that any of us haven't experienced frustration over unanswered prayer. Very few of my own prayers seem to have been answered positively. We'd all like to have an easy life, with God solving all our problems for us; but like any loving Father, God knows that giving us what we ask for all the time will spoil us. And He actually uses suffering in various forms to train and discipline us! (Hebrews 12:7-11)
At any rate, although God sometimes intervenes miraculously (or maybe 'supernaturally' would be a better word), usually He gives us the strength to cope with adversity.

In conclusion, we should expect the Christian life to be tough, because Jesus warned us it would be (Mark 8:34,35). We may not get a satisfying  explanation for what happens to us (or to those we know), but we can trust God to "work in all things for the good of those who love Him." (Romans 8:28)

"His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life." (II Peter 1:3a)

Hi Lanternrouge
Welcome to the forum hope and pray you find the answers you are looking for.
My answer to why there is evil in the world is answered in Genesis.

.    Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever

To become like God or in the image of God we need to have a knowledge of good and evil and to choose the good of better still to choose Love God is Love.
The only thing God can not do is make us love him if he did we would only be robots.
Love is a freewill gift from our hearts love comes at great cost it cost the life of the son of God on the cross.

.Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us

Love will eradicate evil all we need to do is obey our Lords commands.
Love the Lord our God, love our neighbour as ones self, and love our enemies.

Love and Peace
Dave

At this time I have been seeing a person running away...

Frantic....afraid..

I also see a loss of a person in your life [before seeing this topic]

I see a Hand reaching down - while you are no longer reaching up..

It seems as though "God has taken you further than you want to go"

Do not feel as if your will has been invaded here and that you have been taken beyond what you can take

But see it as God broadening your horizon..

You have not lost what God has found - but you have now found [what you never saw]

Though you may give up - God does not ...  @Lanternrouge

I can see you are in relationship with God - I can feel your relationship..

I can only respond by saying "keep going"  whatever your experience =- I know God has not let go of you ...

I can see Him holding you at this time - so-  stop running away - stop [in the spiritual running away]

Begin building this bridge "I see a bridge" it means something to you.. this bridge means a lot to you..

Stop looking at what is happening and focus on Christ alone..
