And we all tend to believe those we trust as in the past we have found them to be truthfull.

One of the problems with church is its desire to present an image of perfect peace and harmony whatever the cost. That's why their have been so many cover ups of abuse in the past.

I remember back in the late 80s being a house group leader and deacon at one place.

At an elders and leaders meeting I happened to upset the apple cart a little by opposing the eldership. Later in the week, I met one of my fellow deacons in the street. He stopped me and then challenged me for being awkward and uncompromising at the Elders meetings, "Why do you always have to upset the apple cart in the elders meeting?"

My reply was, "But you know perfectly well that the elders were lying!"

Him, "Yes I know that, but why can't you just let it go, why do you have to always rock the boat?"

My friend knew the elders were lying to the other leaders and to the members, but he was more concerned with maintaining "unity" than truth before God.

These elders were good and godly men. But in their intention to take the church down a certain route, they had lost the plot completely, their end goal being more important than truth, godliness, or the people they damaged on the way.

In many people's mind opposing church leadership is like opposing "God's anointed", even when their sin is known.
This attitude enables high minded leaders to do what they will completely unchecked.

My fellow deacon knew the elders were being dishonest and underhand, but was far more concerned at keeping up appearances that dealing with that unpleasant reality.

Some time later I was denounced publicly, and thrown out of the church. I shook the dust off my feet, forgave them and walked away.
Disturb us Lord, when we are too pleased with ourselves. When our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little. When we arrived safely because we sailed too close to the shore. Disturb us Lord, to dare more boldly. To venture on wider seas. Where storms will show your mastery; Where, losing sight of land, we shall find the stars. We ask you to push back the horizons of our hopes; And to push into the future, in strength, courage, hope and love.                     (SIR FRANCIS DRAKE 1577)

Sorry Francis they may have started as 'good and Godly men' but by using deception, lying and coersion to get there way they had ceased to be 'good, Godly men' as Jesus said, 'by their fruits you will know them'.

I totally agree. "The elders were good and Godly men"...????..written in the past tense!
Sadly I have seen this time and time again where leaders treat the church as their own personal kingdom. Protection of that kingdom being their prime objective no matter the cost.

Obviously we have to believe and trust some people e.g. our Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

We do also need discernment and wisdom too - trust those who are loving within the church:
Quote
Mathew 7:16 you will know them by their fruit.

Someone said "not everything we are told is true". That is correct but we need to make an acronym we can nay with in order to remember it and also the process is being told the belief and then you choose with wisdom to know if you should believe it or not.

Cyphen with a siv in your mind what you hear on the TV as they have an agenda and ever since you started watching it when you were young, they will program you with the want for material things, lust, bad morals and with the belief that God is not important or that the government is more powerful than God. Lies basicly.

Choose carefully what to believe on TV (and radio and other media obviously) as there is some wisdom and understanding to be found but the best thing you can do is sanctify your mind with the Word of God.

Quote
John 17:17 Sanctify them with your truth, your Word is truth.

Linda shut up, I'm trying to watch Corrie!!! :)
