I have always loved nature but after my class recently studied the  impact our plastic addiction has had on our wildlife and  the  dire effect on our ocean wildlife, killing and deforming them,  I have decided to join the band wagon  this time to help end so much plastic being used and dumped. I feel we do need some plastics for medication needs perhaps but where ever possible I would love to reduce our plastic footprint, returning back to glass bottles, soap shampoos and end the amount of plastic wrapping all our food comes in and to encourage re using our plastic.

Our throw away plastic does not go anywhere. It takes up to 1000 years to decompose. It ends up in our oceans, deeply effecting  Sea Turtles, Seals and Sea Lions, Sea birds, Fish, Wales and Dolphins. Our plastic earbuds are  misconceived as food by Seabirds . They are not able to digest them or they get stuck in their digestive system, which kills them. Plastic beer bottle holders wrap around the shells of Sea Turtles, deforming them as they grow and plastic bag holders wrap around the necks of any animal, the animal is unable to break free.

For us now in 2018 we no longer always have the convenience of a shop on the corner. Supermarkets have taken over. I believe some Supermarkets are working to improve things, by not offering plastic carrier bags and some are giving us the choice to purchase  unwrapped fruit and veg. We can not always afford the Butchers and Greengrocers prices but they usually offer a  selection of foods from local farmers, which means animals haven't had to travel so far to be killed for our food consumption and also have been looked after a bit better under our laws of animal treatment on farms and in traveling to abattoirs. There are still poor ducks, pigs and chicken  being kept in very small cages, not able to move and behave normally  for their entire lives, fed on fattening up quick food, unable to socialize  or scratch  and stressed  until they are put in our food chain so that we can have cheap meats or eggs.So as well as our food and other items  in shops being wrapped in plastic, the well fare of our animals before we purchase their met is also important.

God has created a beautiful world for us to live in and I feel has placed us as care takers  and really, we have mucked up a bit. Greed for money drives people in  their decisions in business all of which we can not take to where we go after we die.  We, the buyers can make a difference. We can vote with our feet. If enough of us move, we can change how things are run just from where and what foods we buy.
. if we choose plastic wrapped foods or not.
. if we refuse the straws.
. if we use our own shopping bags over and over again.
. if we take carrying items with us to carry our food purchases home in. eg. meat from the butchers, bags from the green grocers ect.
. use take away containers instead of clingfilm.
. milk bottles to store toys such as Lego or nails and screws in.
. use or choose glass,  cardboard boxes, hessian bags or material

I would love us to return to the Milk men deliver services again, thus producing jobs and  using  glass bottles that can be washed and re used. Or to go back to the  cartons from America which  we started off with when we first stopped using  the glass bottles system, which would have sufficed. However, those thousands of plastic milk bottles we get through each year can be cut and used as holders for keeping things in like Lego, Kenex, nails and screws. I use them for holding the dog water in the car or to refile the cars' window washer.

So with this post I hope I can encourage you to do your little bit in your little corner of the garden to help our world which is  suffering right now.  I would be happy to see your responses. What do you think?

We have become too use to the convienence of plastic.
Watch the show 'doing without plastic' sorry can't remember which chanel and you'll see just how great a challenge it is.

It is possible, but it means doing without the many handy plastic bottles, potions and produces and using other containers and other home made products.

It is almost going back in time to the period before plastic became cheap and common.

Hi Nina
Thank you for the above article it is an immense problem and I agree with every word you say I think the only reason so much is wrapped in plastic is so that stores can sell more many a time me and the wife go to the supermarket and only want say 2 apples and 3 pears  but have to buy 2 plastic containers with 6 in each.
its all a ploy to sell more and it applies over a great range of goods its all about them selling more and us buying more than we want.

Love and Peace

If you want two apples buy two apples, go to the greengrocer, ditto meat.
Yes it is more expencive, but face facts, if plastic is done away with except for recyclable plastic. Then everyhing is going to be more expensive.

Hi
Just thought of this verse from revelations

. Rev 11:18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth

What I thought was interesting was how could some one 2000 years ago know that man would be in a position to destroy the earth.

Love and Peace
Dave
